sebazzz··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Through GeForce RTX 5080/5090 GPU Compute Performance
Did anyone ever investigate if newer drivers cause older GPUs to perform worse?
sebazzz··on Doge-affiliated employee expected to seek access to IRS system
So we have to come up with an implementation of democracy where bad actors have a harder time evading democracy. So that's not a presidential democracy.
sebazzz··on YouTube asks channel owner to verify phone, permanently overwrites personal info
> It sounds like someone at Google (not necessarily a programmer) needs to read "Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers:"

The whiteboard algorithmic interview didn’t prepare nor test for this.

sebazzz··on Why is there a screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer"? (2016)
Paraphrasing: If you boot <OS> in a way that it will never save data, you can do this.
sebazzz··on US Forest Service and National Park Service to fire thousands of workers
People still didn't know what they voted for though. There are many reasons, voters often don't truly research on who they are going to vote. They either are going by just "the man" they vote for because of promises, they believe the garbage on social media without any second thought, and reject anything that doesn't fit their view because it comes from the deep state fake news. That's why Project 2025 didn't get the attention it should have.
sebazzz··on US Energy Department ending appliance efficiency standards
> Examples I've personally experienced is that many/most driers now available require multiple attempts to get clothes actually try.

You used so many heat pump dryers? They are fairly new. It sounds like you're generalising. A Indesit we had was crappy, our current Bosch 6 is fine but harder to clean the heat exchanger which had been improved in newer versions.

sebazzz··on US Forest Service and National Park Service to fire thousands of workers
People didn't know what they voted for.
sebazzz··on Twelve months at 1.5 °C signals earlier than expected breach of Paris Agreement
We are frogs that sit in a pan of increasingly hotter water. We see some disasters left and right, of course. But linking that by yourself to climate change - one generally doesn't, they need scientist and researchers for that. If they even believe them and haven't been told by the PM that is all fake.

Then we have that abstract figure of 1.5C - not understanding that it is an average. A scientist or mathematician understands that - but for the average person it is too abstract. Even for me, someone who doesn't doubt man-made climate change, 1.5C is still... odd. We should communicate in expected maximum temperatures w/ durations, droughts, disasters this causes. Yet the media keep repeating "1.5C" more often than any alternative.

sebazzz··on Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's largest newspaper quits X, now on Bluesky
If there are only garbage, bot, racist and conspirator replies under any post you make - then it isn't useful anymore. Not for legit readers, not for the newspaper. Also, moving might be the final straw for some readers to move - which might be considered healthy by some from a democratic standpoint.
sebazzz··on Sunsetting Create React App
Honestly, that why I use Blazor. It just keeps simple.
sebazzz··on Everything about Google Translate crashing React (and other web apps)
Knowing Google they'd build a private extension of the Web standard to fix this in Chrome.
sebazzz··on Foreign Aid Freeze Leaves Millions Without HIV Treatment
Any abandoned aid-needing individual in a developing nation has the potential to become a refugee and thus am illegal immigrant.
sebazzz··on Privacy Pass Authentication for Kagi Search
So basically the server signs the token and afterwards the server can verify its own signature for every request with that token?
sebazzz··on Married Women Could Be Stopped from Voting Under Save Act
And also doesn’t require any kind of registration. You just get the voting papers mailed in, and you hand them in at the place of voting - together with your ID for verification.
sebazzz··on Apple Resumes Advertising on X
Everything is being normalized, or salonfähig if you like that word.
sebazzz··on A drill bit that can also drive screws
This looks like posidrive, not Philips.
sebazzz··on Trunk-Based Development
Then it is not trunk-based, it is still PR based. I would also wonder how bigger features would get developed, without littering it across multiple pull requests and feature flags to make sure the code still compiles.
sebazzz··on Trunk-Based Development
It is really sad that almost no modern code review tools support trunk-based development. Nearly all tools assume some kind of branching/pull request.

One tool that was great for _both_ use cases was Jetbrains Upsource, where you could just string a bunch of related commits together in one review. Better yet, it could recognize based on the commit message (like workitem or CR number) that a commit belongs to the same code review and add it.

We actually still use it, even though Jetbrains canned it, because we have found no good alternative. Some of the tools that do code review mandate to also host the code within it, which is not an option because we already host the code in a system we’re happy with.

sebazzz··on Project 2025 Creators Dox Wikipedia Editors. The Tool They're Using. Horrifying
Why is this accepted?
sebazzz··on Associated Press Barred from Oval Office for Not Using 'Gulf of America'
It is still early days. There are several factors at play here. First, American news media work totally different than European in the way they report things. Secondly, some things done by Trump or his aides like Musk are probably not allowed by the law - but the opinion of the judge is always in hindsight. We still need to reach that stage and then see if Trump and the rest of the government will respect the rule of law.
sebazzz··on Disabling cert checks: we have not learned much
I think that many instances are disabling checks in order to troubleshoot something and then never enabling it again. And we see this on all levels - development, devops and also sysops of course. Just quickly disabling something without leaving a TODO, disabling a MSDeploy certificate check because a proper PKI has never been set-up, just ignoring any certificate errors in LAN management tools because installing a certificate is so hard.
sebazzz··on CFPB's 1,700 employees told to "not perform any work"
> CFPB is simply not delivering on its purpose

You can only throw such statement into the world if you would know what it would look like without the CFPB.

sebazzz··on Grafana: Why observability needs FinOps, and vice versa
> And if you need a "FinOps" team to manage your cloud cost, I would argue that there's something wrong with your whole damn paradigm.

FinOps isn't a dedicated job but something a cloud engineer can do as part of its job. In the same way that DevOps doesn't need to be a dedicated function itself.

And as for the cloud... Yes that turned out to be a whole lot expensive for companies than predicted - and you share compute with anyone so that dualcore CPU isn't always that fast. But cloud is also flexible and that is where FinOps comes in.

sebazzz··on Of Course It's a Coup
It is really the fault of the US being a presidential system rather than a parlementary system in combination with district voting system. This allows for one person to easily take hold of democracy - if that person does not respect democracy. It went well so far, but that is despite social media - not because of it.

In the Netherlands we really dodged a bullet on this, post WWII the UK and US had an example function when it came to democracy. The democratic D66 party attempted to transform the Netherlands to such a system but it didn’t go through. We still have a proportial voted parlementary system, which luckily allowed populist and radical parties BBB and PVV not to take too much hold on our democracy - and they are likely on their way out.
