searedsteak··on I opened cockpit door while being attacked, says pilot of Dubai-Israel flight
This story once again highlights that this is bad policy. At least this one didn't end like Germanwings or Malaysian.
searedsteak··on Leaving the U.S. for the Netherlands
Is there reciprocity for this treaty?
searedsteak··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
It is a requirement [1] to land with 45 minutes of fuel remaining, if the pilots go under that, it is considered an incident. As soon as estimated landing fuel goes under the limit, the flight needs to declare an emergency (as was done in this case).

This happened on the 11th. See United 93.
searedsteak··on They don't make 'em like that any more: the 3.5mm headphone jack socket
From the article:

> Some manufacturers claimed that the presence of the headphone jack made it difficult to keep their phones waterproof; but there’s a whole range of good-quality phones from around 2019-2020 that are waterproof to a reasonable degree, without sacrificing the jack.

searedsteak··on They don't make 'em like that any more: the 3.5mm headphone jack socket
I had an HTC Wizard (branded by T-Mobile) many year ago, which had a 2.5mm jack.
searedsteak··on They don't make 'em like that any more: the 3.5mm headphone jack socket
The article addresses both points:

> The first manufacturer to make a point of dropping the headphone jack (I believe) was not Apple – as is commonly believed – but Oppo, and back in 2014. Their reason for doing so was at least a credible technical one: they said it made their phones about half a millimetre thinner. Maybe that was a selling point, maybe it wasn’t. But Apple couldn’t fall back even on this claim, because people found ways to fit a 3.5mm jack socket into the iPhones that lacked one, and even posted videos on Youtube showing how they did it. It wasn’t easy, but it was clearly possible. If Apple genuinely thought that omitting the jack would leave more room for other features, they didn’t actually provide any.

searedsteak··on Saint Michael Sword: Are the cathedrals really on a straight line?
I'd say the bigger question is whether or not the projection used at the time of design was one that would show the straight line. The Mercator projection was first invented in 1569 [1]

> Locked cabin doors are also good.

These have 150 confirmed kills [1], and another 239 suspected kills [2]. They also weigh a lot, so a lot of excessive fuel is burnt because of them every day. They also sometimes break, causing delayed and cancelled flights.

It's like paying 10k in tax over 100k, you just need to wait a year. At least, that's how I interpret the comment
searedsteak··on Koenigsegg's Tiny Electric Motor Makes 335 HP and 443 LB-FT of Torque
I've noticed that some EV users talk about charging rates in "kWh/h". Which is interesting, to say the least.
searedsteak··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
The Sony Xperia line up has SD card slots, headphone back, and dual SIM capability. I don't think they have OLED, but the screens get good reviews. Looks like you can expect only 2 years of updates though.
searedsteak··on Debug Programs by Modifying Them
This is possible in all JetBrains IDEs, just right-click the breakpoint and configure it that way.
searedsteak··on Developer tools can be magic but instead collect dust
Is it not in Belgium? In Germany you can count this as 'Werbungskosten' which you can deduct from your income. Anything you use for your job or for professional development counts as this type of expense. Don't other countries have similar concepts in their tax systems?
searedsteak··on Mercedes-Benz unveils its 56-inch ‘Hyperscreen’ display
In my opinion, BMW has found a decent solution here, there are still physical buttons for everything, but it also has a touch screen. That way while driving you can use the physical controls, and when stopped you can use the touch screen.
searedsteak··on Traffic Simulator
Looks like maxing out acceleration solves all other problems. I guess we should require a minimum power-to-weight ratio for cars from now on.
