sean_pedersen··on I invented two proofs for the Collatz Conjecture
You only criticized my first proof though. I shipped two proofs gladly! The second one just uses inverses of the collatz function and graph theory.
sean_pedersen··on I invented two proofs for the Collatz Conjecture
Ah ok thanks for the corrections, so I need to evaluate how my 2D (projected) arithmentic works for the proof to work out. Thank you so much for taking my work seriously.
sean_pedersen··on I invented two proofs for the Collatz Conjecture
I need an edorsment on arXiv to post it there in the math section... Can anyone help me? Here is my arXiv endorsment code: 9C8E9J
sean_pedersen··on I invented two proofs for the Collatz Conjecture
Who can find the mistakes?
sean_pedersen··on Help: I solved the Collatz Problem, what do I do now?
Published my proofs on my github for now, arXiv will follow. https://github.com/SeanPedersen/CollatzFunk
sean_pedersen··on Help: I solved the Collatz Problem, what do I do now?
Thx, will publish it there soon and post it here of course... can not post it there, need an endorsment for the math section. This is my endorsment code: 9C8E9J
sean_pedersen··on Text Classification by Data Compression
Cool idea! Shouldn't this work also by concatenating the single document (you want to classify) with the compressed version of the conc. class corpus (saving compute time)?

sean_pedersen··on Kolmogorov Complexity: Extensions and Applications
"once we find a first hit that produces X in less than 42 seconds we are done" yes this is what I tried to convey. Start with the shortest program e.g. print(""). Complexify it (span the tree of all valid programs), discard all programs running longer than 42 secs. First program to produce the string signals that we are done.
sean_pedersen··on Kolmogorov Complexity: Extensions and Applications
I think you are right, since it entails the Halting problem it is not computable and thus not even in NP.
sean_pedersen··on Kolmogorov Complexity: Extensions and Applications
Yes I am not aware of any proof on that one. Do you think it will suffice to generalize the statement to just "NP problem" instead?
sean_pedersen··on Kolmogorov Complexity: Extensions and Applications
Good input, added it to the TODO list.
sean_pedersen··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
I don't get how the additive solution does not require to understand the whole system and all it's interactions. If I place a jenga block I need to understand the static properties of the whole jenga tower to prevent collapse.
sean_pedersen··on Signal is having technical difficulties
x=1? But for real good point, I don't know how Matrix scales vs Signal.
sean_pedersen··on Signal is having technical difficulties
Time to jump ship! Use element / matrix an open, decentralized, end-to-end encrypted chat protocol with slick clients for Android, iOS, Desktop & Web: https://element.io/

Also easy to self-host a server, if you need full control:

$ mkdir -p ~/synapse

$ pip3.6 install --user jinja2 matrix-synapse

$ cd ~/synapse

$ python3.6 -m synapse.app.homeserver \ --server-name my.domain.name \ --config-path homeserver.yaml \ --generate-config \ --report-stats=no

sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Is Signal Down?
No cuz people also get that gMail or Outlook is different from eMail.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Is Signal Down?
Use Matrix with Element! https://element.io/
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
https://github.com/SeanPedersen/HyperTag

HyperTag helps humans intuitively express how they think about their files using tags and machine learning. Represent how you think using tags. Find what you look for using semantic search for your text documents (yes, even PDF's) and images. Instead of introducing proprietary file formats like other existing file organization tools, HyperTag just smoothly layers on top of your existing files without any fuss.

sean_pedersen··on Why I will not finish my Bachelor Degree in Computer Science
I got the most value out of studying deep theory and then applying that knowledge to real problems. That is just a rare combination for most courses in my experience to offer. Sadly most are of the form: study a lot by heart for the finals. Repeat 5 to 6 times per semester, repeat for 6 times and graduate. Just not my style of learning.
sean_pedersen··on Why I will not finish my Bachelor Degree in Computer Science
Oh I got a lot of value out of my degree. I enjoyed the theory the most. Trees, Graphs, Algorithmic Complexity and Artificial Intelligence are my deepest interests and I have studied the theory of them in depth. It is just that the way how the knowledge is transferred and especially how it is examined and marked is sadly often not goal orientated. I am happy that I spent a lot of time on my CS education in university, I just see no point in "finishing" it (getting the "special" graduation paper).
sean_pedersen··on Foam: A personal knowledge management and sharing system for VSCode
Glad you like it. Feel free to give some feedback, once you tried it out.
sean_pedersen··on Foam: A personal knowledge management and sharing system for VSCode
Interesting, I just realized I should market my project as a personal knowledge management system as well. Thanks a bunch!

sean_pedersen··on Teamspeak 5 to be based on the Matrix protocol
Would like to see more messaging services jump in on Matrix protocol. Signal would be huge.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
I did not mean monopoly in the literal sense, just used it to express my feeling that a lot ends up flagged as spam that is not from these major corps servers.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?

  (x) It will stop spam for two weeks and then we'll be stuck with it
PoW hardness can be controlled with a parameter.

  (x) Users of email will not put up with it
It is optional (no one is forced to use it).

  (x) Microsoft will not put up with it
Microsoft will put up eventually if the majority uses it.

  (x) Public reluctance to accept weird new forms of money
There is no new form of money involved.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
Cool template! I just think you ticked too much off.

This is my take: Your post advocates a

  (x) technical ( ) legislative ( ) market-based ( ) vigilante

approach to fighting spam. Your idea will not work. Here is why it won't work. (One or more of the following may apply to your particular idea, and it may have other flaws which used to vary from state to state before a bad federal law was passed.)

( ) Spammers can easily use it to harvest email addresses
  (x) Mailing lists and other legitimate email uses would be affected
( ) No one will be able to find the guy or collect the money
( ) It is defenseless against brute force attacks
( ) It will stop spam for two weeks and then we'll be stuck with it
( ) Users of email will not put up with it
( ) Microsoft will not put up with it
( ) The police will not put up with it
( ) Requires too much cooperation from spammers
( ) Requires immediate total cooperation from everybody at once
( ) Many email users cannot afford to lose business or alienate potential employers
( ) Spammers don't care about invalid addresses in their lists
( ) Anyone could anonymously destroy anyone else's career or business

Specifically, your plan fails to account for

( ) Laws expressly prohibiting it
( ) Lack of centrally controlling authority for email
( ) Open relays in foreign countries
( ) Ease of searching tiny alphanumeric address space of all email addresses
  ( ) Asshats
  ( ) Jurisdictional problems
( ) Unpopularity of weird new taxes
( ) Public reluctance to accept weird new forms of money
( ) Huge existing software investment in SMTP
( ) Susceptibility of protocols other than SMTP to attack
( ) Willingness of users to install OS patches received by email
  (x) Armies of worm riddled broadband-connected Windows boxes
( ) Eternal arms race involved in all filtering approaches
( ) Extreme profitability of spam
  ( ) Joe jobs and/or identity theft
  ( ) Technically illiterate politicians
  (x) Extreme stupidity on the part of people who do business with spammers
( ) Dishonesty on the part of spammers themselves
( ) Bandwidth costs that are unaffected by client filtering
  ( ) Outlook

and the following philosophical objections may also apply:

  (x) Ideas similar to yours are easy to come up with, yet none have ever been shown practical (specifically, HashCash)
( ) Any scheme based on opt-out is unacceptable
( ) SMTP headers should not be the subject of legislation
  ( ) Blacklists suck
  ( ) Whitelists suck
( ) We should be able to talk about Viagra without being censored
( ) Countermeasures should not involve wire fraud or credit card fraud
( ) Countermeasures should not involve sabotage of public networks
  (x) Countermeasures must work if phased in gradually
  (x) Sending email should be free
( ) Why should we have to trust you and your servers?
( ) Incompatiblity with open source or open source licenses
( ) Feel-good measures do nothing to solve the problem
  ( ) Temporary/one-time email addresses are cumbersome
( ) I don't want the government reading my email
( ) Killing them that way is not slow and painful enough

Furthermore, this is what I think about you:

  (x) Sorry dude, but I don't think it would work.
( ) This is a stupid idea, and you're a stupid person for suggesting it.
( ) Nice try, assh0le! I'm going to find out where you live and burn your house down!
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
Wait what? I thought major players like GMail, Microsoft etc. have some kinda "monopoly" on eMail because they are gatekeeping by using a strict white list.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
Than you will have many false positives.
sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
Thanks for the reference. But this misses out on another important tool already in use against spamming: White lists.

Yes, in theory PoW makes mass mailing very expensive and thus directly hurts spammers that are not on the common anti-spam white lists. Organizations that need to mass mail users for legitimate reasons are however most likely already on anti-spam white lists and thus need not to do a very hard PoW hash or none at all as they are already proven to not be spamming.

So this paper's conclusion is not the real deal.

sean_pedersen··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
OK after giving this idea a little bit more thought. This is the deal: PoW for eMail needs to come with a parameter that controls the amount of work (computation) done to find the PoW hash. This allows senders to choose on a continuous scale how important it is for them to proof they are not mass mailing spammers.

This in turn allows small organizations / private mail servers that are not on common anti-spam white lists to proof their good intentions in a decentralized fashion.
