Well this is up to the phone OEM's (Samsung, Sony, etc) not Google themselves. Google appears to be asserting more control over the software stack of these Googlebooks.
New Pixel phones get 7 years of support.
Android for mobile (at least on Pixel phones) has this too.
The "special" bit is the desktop experience. New Pixels have a desktop mode if you plug them into a monitor but it's not as fleshed out and doesn't have their Gemini-ified cursor etc. At least not yet.
I think your notes re. ARM and Qualcomm hit the nail on the head though!
The benefit is that its super low overhead (no VM).
It's also not accurate. After nearly a half hour the page shows "git operations" as green but I'm not able to push/pull from my repos with SSH or HTTPS (and haven't been able to the whole time).
I had planned to upgrade the machine to 32GB of RAM but I don't really feel it's necessary at this point. Which is obviously great given the current RAM costs!
I'm not as up to date on the other vendors' models, but when I last used Gemini my feelings were similar between Pro and Flash.
Heck Microsoft wrote their own damn start menu in React native, and VS Code in Electron.
That's what this is. Darwin isn't installable today. Apple just dumps a bunch of source code. Previous attempts at making Darwin bootable didn't go far and had no GUI.
That's a bit hyperbolic. The areas of the internet I frequent do not have egregious ads (for example, this page). Areas where I really would like good ad-blocking (youtube) are often not covered by these ad blockers. Thankfully Youtube Premium isn't too expensive and solves that issue.
Maybe it's better these days but I always found browser extensions (including uBlock) had a pretty big performance hit, so I've always shied away from them (with the exception of a password manager).
For what I'm doing, using containers would be secure enough and much lighter weight.
I've passed on the Claude desktop app for that reason, despite being curious about the "Routines" feature that isn't available in the Claude Code CLI.
That said, I am jealous of the micro-center deals as a Canadian!
Same with surfers, or people who race cars etc. Having a physically small camera, with robust mounting and stabilization is not something a phone in a gimbal or a "real camera" can provide.
