sdcfgy··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I know a language translator (Japanese/English) who is doing very well out of AI screwing up and causing damage.
sdcfgy··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
The trick is not to start in software and have something to fall back in to.

In my case that’s mathematics in academia so I’m going to be starving to death.

sdcfgy··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
Had one like that. I quit and they blamed me for a project failure after the fact. That pissed off a couple of colleagues who thought it might happen to them. They also quit leaving them entirely without a software team. Set them back ten years because they didn’t make the market in time.

Write everything down and make sure everyone knows you’re writing it down. Saves a lot of hassle like that.

sdcfgy··on Let's Ditch Google (Verb)
Wiping tears away with my kleenex right now.
sdcfgy··on Let's Ditch Google (Verb)
Been correcting my kids on this for the last 10 years. It works.

This was triggered by my mother Googling something on Bing.

sdcfgy··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
I bet someone already did that and didn't disclose it.
sdcfgy··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
Wait until someone does that to your favourite cloud provider's customer data.
sdcfgy··on Floppy Emu Hardware Failure Analysis Results
Nope.
sdcfgy··on Floppy Emu Hardware Failure Analysis Results
Crystal failures are always a problem. We used to chuck a bag of them in a tumbler for an hour then on a tray on a vibration table for an hour. About 20% would fail on test from being entirely open circuit to being way off frequency.
sdcfgy··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
That was a second hand EV.
sdcfgy··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
The orange man is the figurehead for a problem. There are other orange men.
sdcfgy··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
I very much doubt it'll happen. Not with the current US leadership. And the technology oligarchy will do anything to keep the current leadership in power because if they don't, they are quite possibly fucked.
sdcfgy··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
I didn't write the compiler but I did make the pizza.

This is definitely not being obtuse. It's keeping discussions around what we actually achieve as humans in the bounds of reality, not within the bounds of marketing and ego.

sdcfgy··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
You still didn't make it.
sdcfgy··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
EV ownership is mostly about lying to yourself and saving face.

From direct experience.

Also worth noting that the fuel on a second hand petrol car cost less than the depreciation on the EV for me.

You walk into a food factory and you ask for a pizza. It comes out and you tell them that you wanted mushrooms, so they make another one. It arrives and you complain that it's square and not round, so they make another one. That one has no tomato sauce so you send it back again. Eventually you get the pizza you want.

I make my own pizza because I like doing it. And if I can't be bothered to make one, I'll just pick a ready made one off a menu from a pizza restaurant.

What's the point if you didn't do it yourself?

I'm tired of this.
sdcfgy··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
Only issue I've seen is search doesn't work in Settings.

Edit: 27.0.1 fixed that.

sdcfgy··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
Why the hell anyone bought into the Chromebook idea I don’t know. Possibly saw the price and thought they’d get away with it.
sdcfgy··on Claude partial outage
One meeeelion dollars then.

Some of us are here to help. $1000/hr.
sdcfgy··on Booted up in 1993, this server still runs – but not for much longer (2017)
The old workstations were always pretty damn reliable. I’ve got a Sun Ultra 30 in storage. I may grab it and boot it up and see if it still works. Suspect the NVRAM and power supply caps are duff though.
sdcfgy··on OpenAI still doesn't seem to have a handle on all of its rogue AI activity
This is how you end up being regulated out of existence. Maybe not in the US but in Europe, which is a market they need, it'll be painful.
sdcfgy··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
No the problem is allowing changing of system architecture or intent because the AI just did it and being totally trained to mentally surrender to the whims of it.
sdcfgy··on Maybe don't let Muse run your Facebook Marketplace account
I'd rather everyone burned for it than heeded a warning.

They are morally bankrupt and will try and do it again and again if it's stopped too early.

sdcfgy··on Maybe don't let Muse run your Facebook Marketplace account
Had that problem here. Our product lead thinks it’s infallible and is surrounded by yes men.

Day one our agentic platform goes live it causes a reportable compliance issue. Massive clean up. Reputational impact. Turned off.

No one held accountable still. Assuming that adding more guardrails will fix everything.

sdcfgy··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
No it's more the "what the hell are people doing to make their lives difficult?" argument.
sdcfgy··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
No it’s just as crap as it always was. There just wasn’t much point in moving the code to anything else as it only gets updated once every 5-6 years.

It’s a utility that converts a horribly obsolete binary format from a thoroughly obsolete bit of hardware into text so it can be processed. Working since 1989.

sdcfgy··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
I hadn't noticed.
