sdcfgy··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
I don't use git. I actually have something still using RCS.

That seems like solving the wrong problem.

Just run make from another terminal...

I had a C program that was a single file 140,000 lines long back then. No issues.

I'm worried that this behaviour has to be defended.

To be fair some malware has a better support and care experience than some open source software. The malware actively encourages you to contact them to pay the ransom. The open source software, no such luck.

I haven't noticed any performance issues in vim to start with. It was fast on a 75MHz pentium for me. The syntax highlighting, same. No issues. I don't always use that though because I can't be bothered to set up anything much past the basic config.
sdcfgy··on Installing NeoVim caused original Vim undo files to be deleted
There is not a duty but there is an image and quality issue. Something many open source projects suffer from and should not.

And even mentioning that results in "fork it if you're not happy" which immediately turns everyone off who's had to maintain a fork to fix a minor issue in something before. And anyone who can't fork it is being told to go to hell.

Everyone needs to quite frankly get off their high horse, crank the ego down and listen to users. Because you're damaging open source with the attitude.

30 years ago, things were better. They got a lot worse, particularly since github appeared.

I've used vim since the first time it appeared in Debian repos. I have been told a thousand times that NeoVim is better, more modern and solves many (conveniently never cited) issues. I just ignored it and carried on. Feeling terribly vindicated at this point as it's a feature I use regularly and have no idea that it would be an issue in NeoVim.

I hate this attitude. It is what makes the free software community look like utter dicks to the user community, particularly those who can't really fork or contribute to it. It's a serious image issue.

Hell I can and have contributed and have been told to fuck off and fork it or entirely ignored.

sdcfgy··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
In the narrow view of your technical world this is correct.

But we are a tiny fraction of all possibilities. And for the rest of the folk, dredging LLM generated material and being forced to produce it does not make them happy. Particularly where it’s seen as a gain by the managers who read the marketing and a loss for those beneath them, while being told to adopt or be replaced.

And even worse they shape destinations and introduce frustration when things can’t be done which were initially intended. We’ve trashed our ROI because it’s easy to build the thing the LLM can do but it’s hard to build what the customer needs. And those things are disparate.

It’s not putting people out of work. It’s making jobs miserable by removing creativity and control from them.

No not really.

Sorry for the snark but that has the same level of credibility as your comment.

If Google did not exist, I don't think the world would be noticeably different.

sdcfgy··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
Considering half the planet stops working when us-east-1 has a crappy day, no.

Also datacentre in space, even if it works, will have a statistical failure model. At the moment that failure model is based on throwing another one up there because fixing stuff is expensive and risky.

So I ask you what happens when your model starts hitting the tail end of the failure curve and can't launch more capacity because associated asteroid strike driven economic failure cripples your launch capacity.

It's just stupid entirely.

sdcfgy··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
That’s even more crazy.

No one is going to give a shit about compute if an asteroid hits us. If we survive it, it’ll turn into a resource war within weeks. We’ll be back to the Stone Age.

The only feasible thing I can see is jurisdiction related and that’s not something we should be encouraging. I mean we’ll just end up jamming data centres from the ground.

sdcfgy··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
Yep. No one that matters and isn’t in the investment hype bubble.

Let me know when Raytheon / BAE / Lockheed Martin / General Dynamics get in on it.

sdcfgy··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
No one is building that. They ran out of money and kit taking Iran on already.

At best it’ll direct a lot of public funds into musk’s and trump’s pockets.

sdcfgy··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
It’s a completely fucking stupid idea in all ways if you throw any engineering rationale at it at all.

Negative on: Risk, cost, thermals, radiation, maintenance, latency, complexity, environmental.

The only win they have is making more outlandish shit to inflate value until it goes snap. One trick pony.

I suspect it’ll go in the trash like their previous experimental infrastructure ideas did.
sdcfgy··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
Very cool! Never tried BeOS back in the day. I heard good things though.

Amazing times. I actually upgraded to that from a Compaq Professional Workstation 5000 which had dual Pentium Pro 180s in it. Ran NT and occasionally FreeBSD. Cost me a small fortune at the time. Backups here were to a SCSI DLT (can't remember capacity) that was chucked in the trash at work. All it needed was a minor repair.

Heh I had one of those back in the day with an Intel made L440GX+ and SCSI disks. One of my favourite machines.

I love this. Apple aren't going to pull out of a market. They aren't pulling out of China for example.
sdcfgy··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
This is wrong. The BBC were reporting on it in detail both online and on TV news. I know this because I was actually working on contract for them at the time.

What we have is a lot of people changing the narrative since to discredit the BBC and divide everyone further.

sdcfgy··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I think this is mostly being misrepresented.

There is speech and there are consequences for speech.

If I incite or state that I am going to commit violence, stalking, rape or murder, should I face consequences? Yes. That's what is happening.

There are outlying cases which will be used to discredit this perspective but reality is there are a hell of a lot of very not nice people out there making active threats and inciting hatred and violence.

And everyone gets their day in court.

How far we have come!

sdcfgy··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I don't think it is. It's a presentation of the facts and current state more than anything. I mean I don't expect an opinion piece all the time.
sdcfgy··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Very well written article.

It relays my main concern which is that while current governments may use this in moderation and under judicial oversight, future ones may not. And we should build tools for the future not just for now.

There’s a general regression towards fascist and right wing ideologies in the last few years and I don’t want to be up against a wall one day because someone did something with ignorant best intent.

sdcfgy··on I am done with this shit
What you’re saying is there’s plenty of opportunity to leverage people’s pockets through moving to compute from your perspective.

We don’t have to move everything to the computer. Also that doesn’t mean the existing models and solutions don’t already fit.
sdcfgy··on I am done with this shit
We are there. I’ve got fuck you money in the bank. I’m just kicking back waiting for the company to fail. It’s free money until then. Make up some shit and go back to doing other stuff.

They have lost money for the last two quarters, customer satisfaction is at an all time low, staff morale is gone, defects are piled up, costs are escalating on tokens and cloud, nothing is getting done but everyone thinks it is.

Let it burn.

We need a total reset. The entire market is overblown, overhyped and sells things nobody needs. Layers and layers of stupid to get nothing done. It’s an extraction economy. I’ve seen people replace simple stuff like a spreadsheet with a cloud hosted vibe coded turd. What the fuck is wrong with people?!? Have we collectively forgotten simple and elegant solutions?
