scrps··on Drones are the new drug mules
Ukrainians mostly use their own drones made by various groups locally to avoid being centralized, they are also running into issues with russian jamming.

Consumer drone gear is very easy to jam, also easier to foxhunt (RF location hunting) so it works both ways.

scrps··on Custom Bambu Lab X1 firmware to be released
No worries, open source has been supporting me for 20 years, it is the least I can do.

I've been going back and forth on the trident vs the 2.4, I need to do more research on the fixed gantry vs the flying gantry but then in the meantime just browsing what is out there and I find a qidi x-max 3, easy bambu competitor, runs klipper, the company seems friendly to open source, handles eng materials, heated chamber, fast. So now I am torn as to which way I am going to go. Also the qidi is not without it's problems from what research I have done but it seems like mostly early bugs.

How do you like the v0?

Edit: forgot to add info

scrps··on Open source liability is coming
I think there are multiple wins but one I see is that the liability falls on open source commercial entities, support services, and any services that handles PII but also if I am reading the law right there is mandatory disclosure so open source projects will essentially get free code audits, patches included thanks to the liability risk.

Unless I've terribly misinterpreted the text which is entirely plausible given a lack of sleep and a enough coffee to jump start a small star.

Edit: typo

I actually posted for that exact reason.

Was looking for a second printer (a coreXY, mine is a cartesian) and the X1 had all the same features as my printer (minus the lidar) except turnkey and enclosed. After discovering their corp culture I hard noped and I think I'll just bite the time bullet and build a voron.

scrps··on Ask HN: Why is my web server being attacked?
Sounds like an amplification attack, you are just in a rotation with a ton of other random hosts generating the traffic which is probably why the packet rate is low.

You could try doing some research on the forged IPs and see who they are associated with. Also try pinging them, my guess is they are down or returning insane latencies.

Either way I wouldn't lose sleep, any server I've ever managed or owned always got weird little visits from the packet goblins from time to time, it is fun puzzling them out. Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is an enemy action.

scrps··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
You can dress it up however you'd like, quite frankly I enjoy the show regardless of being right or wrong. The point is they made it a show. If I were say a senator I might be having second thoughts of putting "AGI" (it really is a useful boogeyman!) in their hands.

Shipping containerized beta as production as a service, SCBaPaaS? You can promise fantastic turn-around, cut staff, and "crowdsource" testing! You offer a pretty dashboard and you are cooking with fire.

Also it has to do with wink wink nudge nudge "Come see us if the election doesn't work out."

Knowing you are losing an election and getting dumped into a $350k/yr easy-mode job takes the edge off.

scrps··on Cyber Attack Forces Biggest Bank to Trade via USB Stick
Some bike messenger rode around manhattan with a usb stick filled with untold billions in bond trades for a Chinese industrial bank due to having their entire network owned from half way around the planet.

That's something.

I'll say this; at least your doctor is asking if something is encrypted, it's a small win but it is a win.

Also just tell your doctor not to worry it is protected by NFTs. /s

scrps··on Binance to terminate Russian ruble deposits
Don't get me wrong, please. I'm not absolving the responsibility by blaming Soviets for Russian problems. I'm just mentioning one of the potential factors, saying that Soviets had contributed to this.

Not a worry, I appreciate the nuance and I actually agree for the most part with your argument. Historical conditioning is 100% a burden and I agree that system has broken trust across the board in russian society but at some point a combination of living in a low trust/no trust society combined with a horrifying mutation of that system mixed with unrestricted capitalism has to have taken a toll even before being pariah'd and sanctioned to hell and back.

I also know there are Russians that are against this and have put their lives on the line (and lost them) trying to expose putin for what he is and does, I just wish more would follow in their spirit and maybe we can, at least in one section of the world, have a little peace and quiet.

scrps··on The FCC voted to reimplement net neutrality. Now comes the hard part
Not sure at netflix scale if NN really affected them iirc netflix does most everything on the edge, I doubt most of your netflix traffic even left comcast's network other than maybe auth data.

Not saying you are wrong about cost increases in general, I think it probably had more of an impact on more up and coming services who might not have the funds to ship out a ton of edge servers.

scrps··on The FCC voted to reimplement net neutrality. Now comes the hard part
I don't remember that at all but I do remember a time when using politicians to deregulate industry so said industry can rent-seek was called corporate welfare.

I have some hope, my neice referred to FB as 'legacy' and from talking to her these kids are getting smart a lot quicker about the tactics used on these platforms and by platforms themselves, they also seem very fluid and less prone to lock-in unlike their parents and grandparents.

Sample size of my neice and her social circle isn't representitive but perhaps it represents a shift.

So they didn't vote for him but they also don't revolt... With the russian military bogged down in Ukraine seems like the right time to throw one.

Edit: Clarity

scrps··on Binance to terminate Russian ruble deposits
Super weird then since putin has taken greater than 50% of the votes since 2000 (nearly 80% in the last election) Maybe some Russians don't want to sleep in the bed they made.
scrps··on EU lawmakers scolded for concealing identities of content-scanning experts
I don't believe it is stupidity at all, they are corrupt full-stop

Even if a politician isn't knowledgable they have staff (look up the staff sizes of some powerful US senators) who can get experts on the phone.

The problem is that what the populace wants is not a parallel incentive with what the politicians and their paymasters want. Banning e2ee, the disneyfication of the internet, it's all old power games with a digital twist, can't let ordinary people have force amplifiers like technology because they might actually carve some power away from them.

Are they conflating encryption with cryptocurrency? I've forced myself to stop saying crypto and started to use encryption or cryptography with most people for that reason.

Amazon expects me to weaken my physical security posture to help them defend against an activity I don't engage in and is in no way my responsibility?

AND

Chamberlain expects me to weaken my digital security posture so they can run some opaque crap on my network¹ that I have very little observability into and even less control over so they can make money?

Money is one hell of a drug because they are high.

How about amazon builds (at their expense) an amazon controlled box, slap a mcu on, do authentication over nfc, rfid, etc etc. Offer it to customers free of charge, hell throw in a sweetener to get them to adopt.

[1] I have a default deny in AND out isolated vlan for crap like this, even if you don't have a network background try to set one up if your networking equipment is capable.

scrps··on Ask HN: Are You Religious?
After careful consideration of multiple compensation packages, culture, philosophy, open-mindedness, vacation & benefits packages, I went with atheism.

Great meal selection, no mandated daily/weekly/monthly meetings, no mandated training, super diverse culture, lack of shame, violence, and judgement for natural human behaviors. Best of all you can work as much or as little as you want.

No one has been sacrificed... At least not since Jerry reheated talapia in the break room microwave.

Shit christmas parties though.

scrps··on Optical Circuit Switching for ML Systems
Not my area, just curious.

If I am getting this (still reading the paper... on a phone :/)... Stupid fast latency due to no processing overhead but slow switching speeds due to how it physically switches, this is basically good for any type of reconfigurable cluster of systems that need low latency without a fixed topology, not strictly ML specific or have I misunderstood that?
