scottshea··on Kim Jong-Il Dies
Sadly I suspect that his son/successor may be even crazier than he was.
scottshea··on NASA Mars Rover Finds Mineral Vein Deposited By Water
I hope that at some point they can find a cross section of sedimentary rock to look at. I imagine it would be much less common on Mars since there is a lot less plate tectonics and certainly no highway systems, mining or construction exposing the rock but still, there might be a shot.
scottshea··on Why your coding standards document is crap, and probably misses the point
I often find that there is usually one person very invested in the standards and it is more of an extension of their need to control their life and environment rather than making things readable. Often I see things as more than opinion rather than absolutes (although no indentations is probably an absolute no-no).

I once worked at a company where code reviews devolved into stylistic debates. We would spend hours witnessing style arguments without ever noticing that a variable was undeclared or a header file forgotten.

scottshea··on More Paypal nonsense
I am so glad I turned down that job with Paypal
scottshea··on House votes to end country limits for skilled workers seeking green cards
Sadly the H1 process is better now than during the dot com era. At the time it was as close as we have come to institutionalized servitude since the 13th Amendment was ratified. I am not saying it is great now, far from it. Rather I get a little nervous any time our Congress starts talking about this.
scottshea··on US judge orders hundreds of sites "de-indexed" from Google, Facebook
I am really curious how Google and Facebook will handle this...
scottshea··on Tech Hiring Lessons Learned
Examples make a huge difference. I try to keep a few personal projects around for people to look at so that I do not have to worry about proprietary code issues.
scottshea··on Copycats
There is one more reason that copying works is that people become disaffected with the original for whatever reason: poor customer service; failure at a crucial moment; finding out the price point of the original was not the best deal, etc. During the mid to late 1990's McAfee software made serious bank on this model.
scottshea··on Carrier IQ Drops Empty Legal Threat, Apologizes to Security Researcher
The value of attention to peoples actions is demonstrated once again
scottshea··on Carrier IQ Retracts Their C&D, Apologizes to Researcher
I would like to think that, in some small way, the exposure of this on HN and keeping it on the front page for so long helped them, uh, see the errors in their ways.
scottshea··on Carrier IQ Tries to Censor Research With Baseless Legal Threat
Getting this post to the front page of HN will help increase the Streisand Effect for Carrier.
scottshea··on Psychopathy in the Star Wars Universe
This helps explain why I started looking forward to Anakin killing off the Jedi. Well that or the atrocious acting and characterizations. "I sense much fear in him." Really? A 9 year old boy taken from his home to a strange place to meet a bunch of old losers to have judgement passed on him and he is scared. What an insight there Yoda. Ass.
scottshea··on Training in 'concrete thinking' can be self-help treatment for depression
I wonder how his would work with people on the Autism Spectrum? One issue they have is with not handling abstract thinking yet they are quite prone to depression.
scottshea··on Top reasons why Darth Vader was an amazing project manager
Was he Six Sigma certified? A Black-Belt? These things are important you know!
scottshea··on Of Aviation Crashes and Software Bugs
This is a really cool article. I love the application of the analysis of plane crashes to software development.
scottshea··on CSS Guidelines for Offshore Outsources
I am just starting to learn Web Design and these are good for me too.
scottshea··on Speedup Ruby 1.9.3 on Windows a lot
For those of us cursed to develop on Windows but deploy to Linux this can be a big deal.
scottshea··on How StackOverflow Scales with SQL Server
I love it when companies offer insight into their practices like this.
scottshea··on Manage the recruiter: four questions to ask
Excellent advice.
scottshea··on Why do some people hate Java? Why do some people hate Java?
I am not opposed to Java as much as I am opposed to the fanatical die-hard proponents of Java who think that anyone not using it is an ignorant savage who needs to be enlightened through repeated arguments.
scottshea··on You're a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
Sarbanes-Oxley Act. It was enacted following Enron and Worldcom to prevent corporate malfeasance. Sadly it gave a lot of auditors a lot of power which translated to 'controls' placed on the work environment. Some make sense (e.g. no read/write access to production for development). Others make no sense (e.g. no access to log files from production for developers troubleshooting issues). It really depends on the company and the audit process.
scottshea··on You're a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
There is that... and of course all Public Companies in the US have the SOX BS baked into the process.
scottshea··on The largest website on the Internet uses MySQL...
And in the case of Facebook it is strangling them... roughly 2/3 of their 9000+ MySQL servers do nothing but control the servers that actually store data.
scottshea··on You're a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
I find though that companies often place as much nonsense in my way as they remove so there can be a trade off.
scottshea··on The impact of Hacker News on my web site
It is amazing the bump in traffic you can get from here
scottshea··on Mozilla puts Firefox on a memory diet
Massive Happy Dance
scottshea··on Ask HN:Do you go back and change your code or let it be.
Sometimes I do it to practice the new implementation and add/improve unit testing.
scottshea··on Giving away my Rails 3.0 book. Code examples also available on Github.
Thank you. This is coming at a very opportune time for me.
scottshea··on Ask HN: Review my (revised) startup idea.
I think the use of Skype is a great idea. I work for a for profit education company and we pour a boat load of money and time into on-line classrooms. Using Skype and/or another framework would have saved us countless hours of labor.
scottshea··on Ask HN: Remote Recruiters?
I wish I could help you but the best I can come up with is finding some that work with larger companies that support telecommuting. Most of the smaller companies that support remote work generally use networking, ads or independent recruiters. Telecommuter jobs collects the Craigslist ads that mention telecommuting but the results are spotty. Dice.com might have a better search but I cannot recall if they have a telecommuting filter; if they do you could look for recruiters that post there.
