scorpioxy··on Exercise to improve hunchback posture forward head carriage correction
I can personally attest to how well the wall angels(and its variations) work. The thing is, you've probably spent years in that wrong posture so you need to be diligent and disciplined about doing your stretches and the change won't happen overnight. Any changes to your computing setup, which you spend hours on, would also be of benefit. Having a desk job will destroy your body so anything you can do to delay this is a good thing to investigate.

Upvoting because this is useful for any programmer out there. If you're not in pain now, you will be...

scorpioxy··on Enemy within: gut bacteria drive autoimmune disease
That and probably most people with autoimmune diseases have been surprised how little is known about these diseases. Just getting diagnosed with one often takes months if not years and multiple specialists all telling you that it's "all in your head".

Also hearing that there's nothing that can be done except watch your body deteriorate is a slap in the face to any one. What you're left with is trying the "unconventional".

scorpioxy··on High doses of vitamin D rapidly reduce arterial stiffness
You mean it hurts when taken together? I am sure you've tried this, but what happened when you separated them by a few hours? After or before food, etc?

You might want to ask a pharmacist about this, I am not aware of any interaction like this that cannot be remedied by changing the supplementation time. Examine is also great at picking out the research.

scorpioxy··on How Australian Tech Companies Can Think About Silicon Valley
Completely agree. I love in Melbourne and it is rated as the "most livable city" for some reason. With having a full time job and the constant pressure to outperform everyone else, the ever increasing rent of tiny apartments and the overcrowded public transportation during peak times, there's not much living to be had. That and the weather is terrible most of the times.

I mean sure it is mostly safe and the economy is doing fine at the moment but those are the bare minimum of survivability. The rest, you are paying a premium for.

scorpioxy··on Setting Up Webpack, Babel and React from Scratch
I've yet to digest this article but it comes at the right time as I try to optimize my employer's webpack/react process.

Curious, do you have any thoughts on rollup? What I gathered was that with the more recent webpack versions, rollup doesn't offer any advantage over webpack which is a beast but is a lot more mature.

scorpioxy··on WhatsApp Cofounder on How It Reached 1.3B Users Without Losing Its Focus
Same in Lebanon and several other countries in the middle east. 15 cents per SMS, now around 9 I believe. So people started using WhatsApp for all their messaging. When audio messages became a feature, people stopped using their phone service and switched to this annoying method of communication. Many people now default to WhatsApp calls for regular calls as well.

When I was there, my monthly bill was over $50 USD per month for very minimal usage of both data and calls. That's ridiculous...

scorpioxy··on 6 months of working remotely taught me a thing or ten
Oh good. I thought i was the only one. Not to distract from the original point of the thread but its just not interesting any more. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy solving problems using code. But gone are the days where I would like nothing more but to spend the entire weekend coding. After a while in the industry, its just more of the same.
scorpioxy··on Is it unethical for me to not tell my employer I've automated my job?
Well no it's not better but I once had a manager that would reply with "It doesn't take that long" to every estimate I made. Even though he had no idea how to do it himself or could even list the risks involved in such a request. Clearly that manager was not a good one.

Wouldn't it be easier if estimates are treated as such and everybody gets treated like a professional? Needless to say, I could only stomach 6 months in that work place.

scorpioxy··on Is it unethical for me to not tell my employer I've automated my job?
You'd think so but (bad) managers never take the blame or responsibility for something unless it succeeds. That's been my experience at least.
scorpioxy··on Rich Retirees Are Hoarding Cash Out of Fear
I hear you... Like disappearing bulk billing GPs, specialists only agreeing to see you if you have private insurance and waiting times for public services exceeding the 1 year mark!
scorpioxy··on Stop the Daily Standup Meeting
Stand ups at an agency I am currently working for on a short term engagement just has people in the tech team listing what clients they're going to be working for today. You know, because that's very helpful for everyone to know....

I think the spirit of agile development is lost on most places and blindly sticking to process without questioning it becomes the norm.

scorpioxy··on How gut bacteria change cancer drug activity
Interesting. I wonder if there's work being done to combine this approach with the modeling done for personalized chemo treatment to determine drug effectiveness against tumor tissues. It feels like combining modeling techniques for the disease + host would provide the best result.

All I got when I started reading papers and articles describing the function of gut bacteria in the body is that "it's complicated". So its interesting to see the words "manipulating gut bacteria".

scorpioxy··on Sleeping tactics and f.lux
Tangential but does he really need 10 hours of sleep a day? The article says from 10 till 8.

I know that some people need that amount to be well rested but that's unusual and often it turns out that they also need exercise and a change to a healthier diet and once those happen, they need less sleep.

scorpioxy··on Australia to abolish 457 work visas
Not a lawyer here either but I'd say you're safe if your visa has already been granted. By grandfathering of the existing visas, they probably mean that there will be a path for existing 457s to move on to another visa when their term expires so usually either a residency or citizenship. They did this with other visas before(family visas) where existing(and in progress) ones remained until expiry but newer ones were not granted.

The 457 system, similar to the student visa before it, was being abused by companies. So the government has been working on fixing the loopholes in the system for quite a while now.

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: How much of your time at work do you spend not working?
Coming from an organization where I spent > 10 hours a week on meetings, I hear you. I believe I spent more time writing emails than writing code. The code I did write was done at night after everyone left and there would be no more meetings and useless phone calls. Managed to create the most used/useful application in the organization and still nothing changed.

When it occurred to me that things are not going to change in my lifetime even with all the promises of upper management, I started creating side projects where I am in control of the full direction. When that wasn't enough, I also started looking for a new job. Joined a startup as a CTO/Lead Dev and was happier.

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: How much of your time at work do you spend not working?
Absolutely and if keeping up with technology is not work then what it is "work"? Is it just typing out the code? What about when your IDE auto-completes your code? It's a little silly to think about it this way.

I try to keep my distractions to a minimum level but I've often encountered comments and articles on HN that have been of great benefit to my work and my clients. Things like a service I've never heard of, a library being used in a way that I haven't seen before or even just personal experiences.

Hell I even use HN to minimize distractions such as reading only the comments section about some new product Google/MS/Apple released(or is killing) just to get an idea of what's out there in the market and if it is of any use to me.

scorpioxy··on Staff and projects cut as Canonical tries to lure investors
I wonder why would they need investors? Investors would be looking for some form of exit. What would Canonical, a primarily services company offer in terms of an exit for any investor?

I understand that IoT and cloud deployments is the "next big thing" but the competition is incredibly fierce with players that have deep pockets.

scorpioxy··on Samsung's Tizen is riddled with security flaws, amateurishly written
Agreed. These "smart" TVs mostly run outdated and buggy software which are difficult if not impossible to update either because of technical limitations or because the manufacturer doesn't care enough after getting your money.

So why bother with a "smart" TV if you're going to be using an external computer anyway. Saving a few hundred dollars to spend on that external computer seems like a better investment. I run a "dumb" big LG TV hooked up to a raspberry pi running Kodi via LibreElec. I'm very happy with the set up in terms of functionality and price.

Edit: the attack via signal is linked from the article, reading now.

scorpioxy··on Thanks for Submitting Your Résumé to This Black Hole
It might be that the vacancies are just there to create the illusion of growth. Because if you're hiring then you're clearly growing. I recently interviewed with a company that straight-up told me that they don't have any positions right now but might in the future. That same position I was interviewed for got re-advertised a couple of months after my interview.

Come to think of it, I know of several examples(startups) where the company was actually failing and about to run out of money and they still advertised but couldn't possibly hire. In my opinion, that's purposefully wasting people's time.

scorpioxy··on A hot bath has benefits similar to exercise
Anywhere i can read more about this? low-power mode and reboots are two terms that are used a lot by mommy bloggers selling ebooks promoting fad diets. Is there any published researchers that talks about this?
scorpioxy··on How to recover lost Python source code if it's still resident in-memory
Pardon my ignorance but why is this a big deal? Debuggers can attach to running processes and pyrasite can inject code into running processes so for a language like python, it makes sense that you would be able to fetch either the resident bytecode or the code itself. What am I missing?
scorpioxy··on Window Maker 0.95.8 released
I've been a kde user for a couple of years now and I had no idea this existed...
scorpioxy··on Toronto Is in a Housing Bubble
No offense but if it was that simple, don't you think the government would've done it already? The Chinese cash looks good and shows growth on paper so politicians and bank managers can show great numbers in the short term. It's only in the long term that you'll destabilize the economy and do irreversible damage with money laundering behavior.
scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
I have a 6.5% interest rate savings account I still have back home so I guess you can call that some form of investment. Definitely one that beats a 4% inflation rate. Our currency is also fixed against the US dollar. But I don't believe this is sustainable.

I also don't believe this is going to last more than a few more months until the bank has attracted as much cash as it needs. Of course that's also a third world middle eastern country and so lots can go wrong there which I have no control over. Thus my interest in moving it here. Vanguard is looking more interesting by the day. And yes, they do have a similar option.

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
Yep, I'm aware of the recommendation to use your age as a rough percentage to how much you need to have invested in more secure vehicles. Solid advice I guess.

I still haven't looked at the numbers to see if it's worth it. In Australia, we're expecting a market correction to happen initiated by the real estate bubble finally busting. Which means that bonds would gain while the market loses. Of course people have been expecting that for many years now and statistically speaking it will have to happen at some time... Knowing this, I am still not sure whether to just invest and deal with the consequences if and when they happen or keep my money in my sock drawer.

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
I'm already in my early 30s and my circumstances did not allow me to start investing in my 20s even if I had the knowledge. I won't get into it now but it wasn't possible then. So that means I can only start investing now. Assuming that you do follow the expected timeline, what does retirement mean? Spending money for when you're no longer able to work? That assumes that you actually own your own home and only need spending money + medical expenses. And how can you unless you've invested in your 20s plus have you seen the current real estate market(Australia)?

I'm not sure I have a specific point except to say that the math stops working unless you follow the exact path expected.

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
That article convinced me otherwise. I wish I could find it now because I'd love to get some input on the numbers that, I'm assuming, I'm reading correctly.
scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
Oh I agree. They're a good deal considering the alternatives but they also carry a lot of risk. Less risk than individual stocks of even specialized baskets but a lot of people throw the term around as if its magic. Several source I've read also assume that you'll constantly be putting money into the market and never withdrawing it to actually buy that house you start this whole thing for. Withdrawing the money means your rate of return depends on which cycle the market is in when you do it and to get the best rate, you need to withdraw when its peaking. That's timing the market. That's misleading...

But overall, I agree with your analysis. It's a great vehicle for people who either lack the time or knowledge required for investing. If you decide that stock investment is the best way forward for you...

scorpioxy··on Ask HN: I have 50k. How do I make it more without a startup?
When I say small online business, I was thinking more along the lines of drop shipping or novelty items from china which you can resell. There's a big difference between the effort required for a startup and populating a shopify account...

If you're after no effort at all, then investment is probably the best advise you would get. But that does carry some risk. As always, the risk/reward ratio...

scorpioxy··on Toronto Is in a Housing Bubble
Melbourne resident here. Same problem and real estate agents are playing along because they make more money that way. Politicians will say and do what has become the norm, "we strongly believe that the average Australian needs to be able to afford their own homes" but that's about it. I realize its not an easy problem to solve but it is also one that will not go away if you ignore it.
