wtfffff that gave me sinister chills. Right up the spine. Wow!
schmookeeg··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
This will change when out of control billing gets noticed. Then us devs will, I presume, get token rations.

I can see my new Thursday afternoon "oh chit" moment being that I didn't complete my weekly task because i torched all of those tokens M-W doing task/ticket grooming using the hot hot model instead of the dodo model with jira mcp connector :D

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I'm reading something a bit strange and wonderful: The mountain in the sea by Ray Naylor -- a fictional peek at octopus intelligence.

Question for some of y'all: Those who are listing 3 or more (sometimes way more!) books -- do you read them in parallel? I'm a dyed-in-the-wool serial book monogamist and can't fathom having like 8 or 10 storylines in my head at once.

No judgement, just curious and somewhat awed :)

schmookeeg··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
What happens if the momentum of us AI-addled outlives the tribal knowledge on the sidelines?

I genuinely fear your scenario -- "AI was good enough for long enough to let the artisans with the knowledge die off" -- now it's idiocracy. :)

Although is this different than people who know how to build and operate a steam engine? I am not certain.

schmookeeg··on S.F. Democratic Party stands behind Flock surveillance cameras in vote
I'm a recent transplant. I really like it here.

Voting for flock cameras right now though? That seems impossibly tone deaf to me.

I would have thought the politico playbook would be to stay quiet on the issue, then sneakily swap in a flock alternative AI camera company while loudly heralding how awesome you are for removing the flock menace. Boiled frogs applaud. On to the next 15 seconds of outrage (datacenters I assume :) )

schmookeeg··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
I don't need a degree in sociology to want the dude who broke into my car removed from society.

If he finds the experience improving, so much the better, but it is not my primary concern.

schmookeeg··on Texas police department ordered to close for failing to provide public benefit
I applied the article's premise, irrespective of the excuses proffered: "failing to provide a public benefit"
schmookeeg··on Texas police department ordered to close for failing to provide public benefit
I'm guessing Oakland PD is sitting up a little straighter today.
schmookeeg··on JetKVM Mini
This comment thread has made me and my LanTronix Spider feel super old. :D
schmookeeg··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Somewhere, deep in a storage tote, a UW SCSI cable I paid 50 bucks for at Fry's shows a glimmer of hope.
schmookeeg··on Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine
We have owned two. Trouble-free EV and trouble-free motor. The over-engineered little electrical actuators (for trunk, for gas-door opener) were our maintenance costs. The US only offers a single, dreadful tire in the correct size (Bridgestone Ecopia), which is the true achilles heel of the thing. The tiny tires seem to be made of discarded twix wrappers, are super expensive, and get destroyed by potholes and road hazards.

They're lovely little city bugs and just a pleasant place to be inside.

schmookeeg··on We Must Return to the Office to Use AI in Person
Because mayonnaise can never be load bearing?
schmookeeg··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
My EQS has carplay and android auto, and I am a staunch google maps user. That said, I use the MBUX mapping most of the time. It does a good job -- and not just long drives where I need the EV charger logic -- day to day, it's plenty fine.
schmookeeg··on Show HN: HN Match Maker – Matching "Who Wants to Be Hired?" With "Who's Hiring?"
I don't see the blast. The endless non-job-related spam from "who wants to be hired?" posts is real, though, and actually creepy IMO. Looking at you today, pivotpaper.us
schmookeeg··on I'm the Guy Who Destroys Antique Books After We Scan Them into Our Company's AI
Apparently I am not on reddit enough, since I have no idea what a snowclone is.

I also enjoy Seinfeld and I have never 'got' McSweeneys. I just assumed I was a philistine to that brand of... comedy. :)

schmookeeg··on Bye, Bye GitHub
My gh actions were straightforward and moved to forgejo runners with zero drama.
schmookeeg··on Tim Curry has died
can we not?
schmookeeg··on Tim Curry has died
I can't tell if I've just been in the bay area too long or what, but honestly, funerals could stand to be disrupted :) They could be better.

RIP Tim.

schmookeeg··on The Great Steam Deck Crash of 2026: How the New Pricing Decreased Demand by 80%
Really? when you hear "steam" you think "the pioneers in exposing underage kids to gambling" ?

I can't even picture gaben with a wispy moustache to twist evilly. I think that would look ridiculous on him. :)

Your "bad guys" are my "people are apparently and inexplicably mad that steam doesn't do their parenting for them" guys.

schmookeeg··on Starlink unlimited aviation plan to rise from $10k/month to $20k
As a Joe Piston, the starlink pricing constant-whipsaw has been really annoying.

I love the tech. It's truly game-changing. And there is no competitor right now.

I bought my mini dish for $400 or so. I've paid $250/mo, $65/mo, $250/mo again, now $200/mo, and on standby for $5/mo and now $10/mo. Don't get me started on the speed-limit and bandwidth-metering games they've played along the way.

I literally have no idea from month to month what the thing will cost. It's still awesome. But there are thousands of butthurt pilots who bought the dish at 65/mo (and many made 100W PD power upgrades, self included, for another few hundred) and got raised to 250/mo immediately.

It's not so much the cost anymore as the principle of a completely unhinged vendor. Bezos' version will have a bunch of ready buyers if he can stick to a price for longer than a Ketamine high.

schmookeeg··on LinkedIn is a cesspool of scammers and identity theft
This title could have stopped at the fourth word.
schmookeeg··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
That Eggenfellner dude on zuckbook has been spamming a continuous stream of his dream twin highwing and it looks nice. I hate his spam but love his mockups, I want it to be more than a paper airplane so badly. :)
schmookeeg··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
:) Baron. some 300hp effective little turbines with non-ridiculous fuel burn would be a "shut up and take my money" moment for me.
schmookeeg··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
Calling my airplane a MAGA airplane is a good way to get my wife to argue for a boat instead. :)
schmookeeg··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
I actually hope the turbotech holds up under actual use. I'd love to toss my IO-550Cs for Jet-A.
schmookeeg··on USAA closed 51% of home insurance claims without making a payment in 2025
This is my experience too. In our auto claim, the dealership expressed relief that we had "US PayPay" for our insurer. No (or less) nickel and diming apparently and smooth payment.
schmookeeg··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
I have had VASTLY better free health coverage (OHP, Portland OR via Providence) than the current Kaiser dreck I and employer pay significant sums for.

Healthcare is not a flex, and it my experiences on the west coast, it's an inverse correlation to wealth. :/

schmookeeg··on Ask HN: HN frontpage feels boring now?
I share your take, but I think from the other side of the coin -- I am frequently finding interesting topics [flagged] by the time I click through, and it's mildly infuriating.
schmookeeg··on Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported after October 2026
I feel like I have mourned the death of MSPub at least once before.
schmookeeg··on Ask HN: Another "Hacker News" with less AI and more human-focused hacking news?
I've noticed myself and several colleagues have all taken to making little SaaS's for sport -- I'm not sure WHY we've all done that, but it's totally a thing.

Maybe if there was a monthly "Show us your (project/vibe/slop)" thread, it would provide a centralized spot for it all, then you could ignore it, once, at leisure, instead of the filters working overtime. :)
