schlauerfox··on Pirating the Pirates
One thing to note, is that the library of congress has the power to create the exceptions to the DMCA. The EFF lobbies for expansion of the exact powers the article is advocating for. https://www.eff.org/issues/dmca-rulemaking
schlauerfox··on Lucasart's Afterlife
When they were acquired the stage banter was pretty good too. "we can make excel stuff, halo stuff..."
schlauerfox··on Grim Fandango Puzzle Document (1996) [pdf]
Fortunately George Lucas only directed them to "Not lose money".
schlauerfox··on Lucasart's Afterlife
It changed in 1990. There was a logo with both names briefly.
schlauerfox··on Lucasart's Afterlife
Have you played Psychonauts or it's sequel? or anything from Double Fine Productions. Tim Schafer runs that studio. Also Ron Gilbert does games too under Terrible Toybox including a more recent Monkey Island.
schlauerfox··on Lucasart's Afterlife
Tim Schafer of Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle runs Double Fine Productions, newly released from Xbox Game Studios to independant status. They're running a kickstarter to extend their runway right now around their 2 week internal gamejam "Amnesia Fortnight" and documentary. (not fortnite related at all). https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/amnesia-fort...

They could really use some support if you're a fan of his work.

schlauerfox··on Reverse engineering my ADHD test
This Doctor's videos reframed the clinical work and actual research for me, very informative and helpful to me personally. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0tLWu7ljYVFPiZQfHjTMsA
schlauerfox··on Reverse engineering my ADHD test
That was my first thought. I only wish my type was to put in the work for a blog post instead of just thinking on it and getting overwhelmed with all I need to get done.
schlauerfox··on Peter Cullen, Voice of Optimus Prime in 'Transformers,' Dies at 85
Here he is telling a powerful story about finding the voice by being inspired by his brother's calm authoritative voice, a Vietnam veteran. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zryfjSaxXLo

schlauerfox··on Halcyon Video – a 3D video store for your media server
You need to hire someone to just record judgy videos of each of the famous titles, to get the full effect. Make it look like a 16bit era videocoded like nighttrap or myst.
schlauerfox··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
Movie Money Understanding Hollywood's (creative) Accounting Practices 9781879505865 This is THE book on the subject. There's a lot more to it than that. Sometimes productions get creatively charged by the studios costs that may not be directly related to shift losses. Sometimes contracts redefine common terms so your points structure is completely misleading.

schlauerfox··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
I'm convinced it's from the old JCPenny/Sears/mall back hallways that were minimally decorated that housed the photo studio and layaway filtered through the eyes of a 5 year old.
schlauerfox··on London's Free Roof Terraces
There's a Los Angeles one also, https://planning.lacity.gov/preservation-design/privately-ow... but the linked arcgis map doesn't work for me? https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/225e307c3ad34e588fa7536...
schlauerfox··on Nobody cracks open a programming book anymore
I very much miss OPAMP techincal books in Los Angeles, and later the Fry's technical books section. Barnes and Noble and my local library still carry some. There's just nothing that gives you that random access to the unknown unknowns like a bookshelf. Using an AI to give you suggestions can come close, but as they're now switching to ad placement pushing product instead of really pulling from a mega training pool it will become useless.
schlauerfox··on Show HN: Agentic interface for mainframes and COBOL
That's great! Thank you
schlauerfox··on Classic 7 is a Windows 10 LTSC mod to look 1:1 to Windows 7
Yeah, Vista Ultimate had animated desktops, it was stable for what I did, used ReadyBoost SD card for increased performance and the HP Pavilion convertable pen/touch screen was awesome. Not everyone had the same experience.

schlauerfox··on CNN founder Ted Turner, a pioneer of cable TV news, dies at 87
Someone needs to update the simpsons wiki : ( https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/Ted_Turner
schlauerfox··on Ted Turner has died
Can't find the source but the quote I heard attributed to Orson Welles to Turner wanting to colorize the purposefully black-and-white Citizen Kane was "Tell Ted Turner to keep his goddamn crayolas off my movies"
schlauerfox··on What killed the Florida orange?
Or the death of the American Chestnut the generation before, once so common its causually in a Christmas song, now all but gone.

schlauerfox··on Bitcoin and quantum computing
This was already pretty well hashed out (heh) during the 'core'/'cash' issue when there was an attempt to fork in an expanded the block size. Both chains still exist. Bitcoin operation is entirely up to the miners to determine the heaviest chain, and that's like two entities (the number of entities required is called the Nakamoto coefficient). It's not magic, but there is a huge cult built up around it by scammers, rubes, opportunists and speculators.

If you have something precious on home movie film, this lab in Burbank, CA that does a lot of the movies will have sometimes deals on film transfers for holidays, or you can call them for a quote. No relationship, but I did have some done and they were very good. https://www.pro8mm.com/
