Union Busters Coming After Me

This is the attorney who runs https://nlrbresearch.com (which is run on Datasette) and the AI assistant (Claude Skill) that is tied to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOa3Pc8RD40

A cancer center [1] is resorting to these tactics? Based in Seattle?!

Here is their leadership team and Board: https://www.fredhutch.org/en/about/about-the-hutch/leadershi.... If you're in the area, or if you know a patient, I'd e-mail them a copy of this blog post.

Of course they are. It's a good reminder that non-profits are very often just an arm of capital, whatever their legal status is, and that they will exercise capital's authority to try to suppress workers' rights.

US management culture is the same everywhere.

Paying the worker bees more because they've unionized might potentially take money away from the nonprofit's important mission. Not to mention the salaries of senior staff, who are paid over a million dollars a year. [0]

Some are missing your (also missing) "/s".

Unions destroy innovation and change in businesses. Look at how teachers unions fight against performance based pay and make it impossible to fire bad teachers. I love that cancer centers are resisting communism.

Innovation and change are not worth as much as providing a living wage to those who work for you. If you value nebulous innovation over the quality of life of real people, I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, I value curing cancer as being more important than letting slackers collect paychecks and not get fired. Sorry.

You're talking to a troll.

Amazing. Next is automating this, automatically or manually gathering all domains they have registered, and spinning up Claude to register a similar domain and creating the counter website.

> When I asked them whether they believe those are IP infringements, I was told that they don’t answer hypothetical questions.

Huh, I've never seen this strategy before.

Notably, those questions aren't actually hypothetical.

It’s a close relative of the “I haven’t heard of that defense” by politicians who have definitely heard about said event in question.

This is delightful. I know he's not paid to do this but I would gladly donate to this.

This is the spirit we need more of, good to see nerds causing a ruckus.

Oooooh this is great.

This is honestly hilarious and I applaud the excellent use of Claude Code for the malicious compliance with their demands.

> malicious compliance

This isn't malicious compliance. It's over-the-top compliance. He has no requirement to comply with their random demands. He does anyway.

I wonder how this will be received. Since AI has come up, I think pro-union sentiment has been at a an all time high. How do you feel, HN?

Better get yourself a gun.

He's being harassed by a law firm, not the mob. If someone shows up to do him harm they will be from the government because the law firm will have contrived government process to that end.

Shooting at them while they're on the clock is generally not wise.

It's not that far fetched to assume that someone could be in physical danger after ruffling the feathers of a company that has hired a union busting firm. Union Busters have a long history of employing gun violence against striking workers.

I would agree. The history of union busting is full of examples a violence by the union busters via private contracts and government agencies. There are probably more violent, than non-violent examples.

The Pinkerton Agency is basically a murder-for-hire company, historically. They generally only cater to corporate customers, so politicians kept their eyes turned elsewhere.

They mostly switched to ruining your life but it's got a long history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_worker_deaths_in_Unite... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-union_violence_in_the_Uni...
