sbt··on I hope work from home continues
This sounds like the office from hell
sbt··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
Salaries in the US are not that much higher than in western Europe if you exclude Big Tech. Curbing the power of Big Tech is pending a new international tax agreement (don't hold your breath).
sbt··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
This should not be legal.
sbt··on Why Most Founders Don’t Take Good Advice
Have you ever tried giving parenting advice to a new mother? Giving advice to founders is the same thing. You are probably right, but this is their baby and figuring it out for themselves is part of the startup experience.
sbt··on Ask HN: Career and life advice for a 30yo
I can understand the sentiment. My own view is that the industry has seen a dwindling of opportunity that really started with the dotcom boom in 2000. Every year, startups target smaller and smaller opportunities while the big monopolies take an ever increasing share of the pie.

What is needed is a return of anti-trust legislation in the US. Someone should write an opera called Schmidt in Washington.

sbt··on Anders Tegnell defends Sweden's virus approach
The 20-25% immunity was for the Stockholm area, not for the country as a whole. In reality they were off by something like 5%.
sbt··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
How would you characterize the quality of CircleCI? I've spent quite a few hours trying to work out mysterious bugs in a build process that runs fine locally. This morning the web ui was full of 'client error' messages.
sbt··on Gaussian Processes, not quite for dummies
Great article, easy to understand. I also like the unpretentious tone of it.
sbt··on Seasteading
Something tells me these guys are more motivated by tax evasion than by saving the environment.
sbt··on Spotify to Apple: Time to Play Fair
About time.
sbt··on ‘Trotsky’ Is an Icepick to the Heart of Soviet History
This reads like a HuffPost review.
sbt··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
It's always for someone's gain but as with other things in the US it's the shareholders who gain.
sbt··on Gmail: the slowest website I'm using
Also the design is too American/AOL looking.
sbt··on Europe Finally Has an Excuse to Challenge the Dollar
The US cannot sustainably force the EU to suspend trade with a third country. Sanctions, at least employed in this way, is a weapon which use reduces its effectiveness. Like everything the Trump administration does, reneging on the JCPoA represents an extreme trade-off in favor of short-term gain at greater expense in the long-term.
sbt··on IMF staff made misjudgments in Greece, became cheerleaders for the euro (2016)
Note that the Telegraph backed Brexit.
sbt··on Tactics of Psy-Group, Black Cube Revealed in Canadian Court Battle
This is a commercialization of mafia tactics.
sbt··on Facebook Hits 2 Billion Users
Facebook "works" in the same sense opium "works"
sbt··on Google plans ad-blocking feature in Chrome browser
LOL
sbt··on Raymond Smullyan has died
Smullyan's book on First-Order Logic is still the best textbook I have ever read in any subject. I wish more people would write as succinctly as he did.

sbt··on Facebook to Open Startup Garage at Station F in Paris
this is political theatre
sbt··on Battery technology may emerge as a trillion-dollar threat to credit markets
"this feels like a pretty alarmist article to me for a few reasons."

I'll give you another reason - It's Bloomberg News. One of the Buzzfeeds of the financial press.

sbt··on Reflections of an “Old” Programmer
The second advice, investing in durable skills, is key. In addition to what the author mentions, I would point out that more change happens higher in the stack. There is relatively little change at the x86, C, operating system level, entrenched protocols. But once you start getting into the higher level languages, and in particular web, the churn is much greater. So personally I'm trying to stay away from those higher levels.
sbt··on Investors Are in Denial About China
This has been the consensus view for at least a few years now. Consequently, there has been a large fall in prices for companies benefiting from China, from miners to European tailors. I don't know if economists are in denial, but if anything asset markets still reflect a deep worry about China.

I would rather worry about the flipside scenario, that China is in better shape than most Western analysts fear.

sbt··on Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app
Looking forward to it!

Why is a browser extension needed in this case? Does not the browser expose a source of randomness that would be enough to write the rest of the crypto in JS and use that?

sbt··on Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app
I have been using Signal (and TextSecure before that) for a while. The two features that would make me use it more would be:

1. Web client. (I send most of my texts from my laptop, which means I use Hangouts)

2. Search messages on the client.

Thanks for a great product and keep up the good work.

sbt··on IRCAnywhere
I am all for using an open source alternative to Slack. But IRC is not it. What we need is a modern, open standard for persistent group chat ala Slack, with security features. I am not saying sit down and draft papers, writing code that can become a standard is fine. Maybe Mattermost is it, I don't know.

sbt··on Amazon Web Services in Plain English
So many ways to make your software depend on Amazon.
sbt··on Show HN: Cdefs, extract function prototypes in C files to JSON
Came to see if this used LLVM for parsing, found node...
sbt··on Stocks Off Sharply as Market Upheaval Grows
I would recommend an article by George Magnus called "The Chinese model is nearing its end", which was printed in the FT on Friday. You can bypass the paywall if you Google for it.
