sawthat··on LivingSocial Is Laying Off More Than 50 Percent of Its Staff
Well if it's that or give up, a lot of people choose not to give up.
sawthat··on Hidden motors for road bikes
Just curious: why not ride a regular bike to work? I've been doing it for a year now (16.5 miles round trip) and it has been great. I never could find the time to exercise before and now I commute and exercise at the same time. Parallelism!
sawthat··on Nobody Cares (2011)
The title is a perfect review of the post.
sawthat··on For Silicon Valley, the Hangover Begins
I don't know if there is actual widespread resentment towards coders. I doubt it (outside sf of course) but regardless, the desire take down people who have good jobs and salaries, rather than spread the wealth to all is just the worst of human nature.
sawthat··on Secondary shops flooded with unicorn sellers
I predict, that in the future, there will be a recession. Also, at some point, an economic boom. Feel free to quote me on that.

I am unable to give exact dates, but there is a 25% chance that it will begin in the spring (what year, I cannot say)

sawthat··on Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units
Zero. Exceptions were granted for pretty much every "high level" employee.
sawthat··on Stop Buying Real Estate in SF
Right, if you are underwater this means you basically have to walk away and lose it all. If you are renting you just lose the rent paid, which is a lot, which is why there really isn't a "smart" way to live in the bay area.
sawthat··on Stop Buying Real Estate in SF
that's the worst case scenario. But the thing is that you are basically investing all your money in one asset, you aren't diversified. In order to have enough money left over to diversify you need to make a lot here...like...$500k+ a lot.
sawthat··on Stop Buying Real Estate in SF
Never. Only people who have never been on a boat on the pacific coast think this is a good idea.
sawthat··on Stop Buying Real Estate in SF
If there was a way to live here that didn't suck as an investment that would be great. But there isn't. You can rent (costs the same or more than a mortgage, without the tax advantage) and you'll have nothing left to invest. Or you can buy and "invest" all your money in home equity, exposing yourself to ... all the downside.
sawthat··on The assault on neurosurgeons’ privileges by software and bureaucrats
My employer provides emergency childcare, and I'm pretty sure I make considerably less money than an anesthesiologist.

What would you have had this person do? Leave their child unattended? Do you have children? Who takes care of them if you have to work late?

sawthat··on The story of Vatler’s shutdown
Did these people not have lawyers? That's what I don't understand. The job of the police is not to help you understand the law. I suspect that the other valet companies had their lawyers send a letter to the police explaining the law and how Vatler violated it. If you'r going to operate in a regulated environment you can complain about it, or bring lawyers.
sawthat··on Square Prices Its IPO at $9, giving it a $2.7B valuation
It really depends on the way the shares are distributed. I suspect they aren't "screwed" but they aren't exactly going to get rich from this.
sawthat··on Homeschooled with MIT courses at 5, accepted to MIT at 15
Don't know this kid, or this situation, but to commenters here who seem envious, or young people who are inspired: being a child prodigy expires at age 25. Being known for your youth means that once you aren't young anymore you've lost that. If your identity is wrapped up in being precocious be ready with a second plan.
sawthat··on Pandora to Buy Rdio Assets for $75M, Rdio Files Ch.11, Will Shutter Service
The $75 million will be used to pay creditors. It's not an end run, it's better than the alternative which would be creditors going after shareholders to recover their debts. (which is why bankruptcy protection exists)
sawthat··on Pandora to Buy Rdio Assets for $75M, Rdio Files Ch.11, Will Shutter Service
Yup. It's failure.

To be less glib: when your company can't pay it's bills and can't get more investment you file for bankruptcy protection.

sawthat··on Life in a Studio Apartment with My Wife and Two Sons
Of course, but there is no evidence that operating in Tulsa would prevent that.
sawthat··on Life in a Studio Apartment with My Wife and Two Sons
I worked in Colorado after the .com crash, the tech industry was devastated there, Bay Area companies that had opened offices in the area reconsolidated back in the Bay Area, rather than take advantage of lower payroll costs in Denver. It sounds good on paper to move out of the area, in practice it hadn't happened yet.
sawthat··on Ask HN: How do I evaluate my equity offer?
Forget about statistics. This is how I evaluate a job:

A Find out how much I need to take home per month to pay my bills and live to the standard I want as well as save for retirement.

B Determine if I would like this job. See if it's the kind of work I want to do and if it will take me where I want.

C if the offer in salary is A, great, equity is nice to have above it but it doesn't matter. If you have kids and mortgage like me you go for the maximum now money because you can't spend future money. If you're young and single take a chance, there's a tiny chance you'll get some money out of it (but not much of a chance)

A is most important. Don't go into debt or deprivation for someone else's dream.

sawthat··on Ask HN: How do I evaluate my equity offer?
You are discounting equity, bonus and future raises at bigco that you won't get at a startup. At bigco you can get rsus that are worth $25k all of the time, and 200k some times.
sawthat··on Life in a Studio Apartment with My Wife and Two Sons
Everyone keeps asking this question. The answer: they are hiring remote workers. But my question: where is the evidence that tech companies are not able to be profitable with their high payroll costs?
sawthat··on Why Childcare Workers Are So Poor, Even Though Childcare Costs So Much
Because many intelligent and skilled people want to have children, and they'd rather work in a challenging and rewarding job that pays them enough to pay for child care. That's why.
sawthat··on Can Airlines Make Money?
Search hipmunk. Sort by price. Buy. That's the whole process. They don't look at any other factor (search engines don't surface them)
sawthat··on Layoffs Hit Gumroad as the E-Commerce Startup Restructures
Well, Google and Facebook are both extremely profitable, so the wages they are paying their employees aren't hurting them at all.

sawthat··on Employees at Airbnb, Square and Stripe Are Spending 50%+ of Income on SF Rent
People have been trying to do this for thirty years. No idea why it never seems to stick, but it doesn't.
sawthat··on Employees at Airbnb, Square and Stripe Are Spending 50%+ of Income on SF Rent
Long story short: people that own single family homes in SF are winning the most because of the massive gains in value and we don't have to pay increased property taxes because of proposition 13. Basically anyone who currently owns property in SF is a "winner" and that includes the many small time property owners that own the 2-6 unit buildings that dominate the city. The rent money is flowing to those people. Who probably are mostly local.
sawthat··on Silicon Valley’s Economic Indicator: Caltrain Ridership
I have two kids and I live in SF. I'm just a regular old developer too. For day care you should probably be budgeting more like $2k, FYI.

I live in the outer sunset and I own my home.

sawthat··on On doing things other people can't
Do you know what you get for optimizing your life for achievement? You die. Just like everyone else.
