satyrnein··on New divorce app to help couples split assets in New York without lawyers
I wasn't trying to make it personal, and your situation does sound unusual; sometimes the stay-at-home partner ends up working more hours than the breadwinner spouse, who might work 40 hours at the workplace and do nothing at home. That doesn't sound like it was the case for you when your wife wasn't working.

I would be quite displeased indeed if my generosity in marriage is taken to mean I would be so generous after being ditched.

I would say to anyone on the default marriage contract, there may well be spousal maintenance in the event of divorce, so if anyone thinks that's unfair, draw up your own agreement.

satyrnein··on Amazon sales of Deep Learning with Python are counterfeit
Why does Amazon have multiple sellers for any item in new condition, in that case? By your logic, there should only be Amazon or the direct manufacturer. What am I missing?
satyrnein··on A clip from Stray got me banned from Twitter
I wonder if some of those countries could come up with a unified regulatory framework so companies have a way of bringing down the compliance costs of serving those countries, rather than freeze them out entirely.
satyrnein··on A clip from Stray got me banned from Twitter
The video in question seems to have been (incorrectly) flagged as either a revenge porn or upskirt video, which people have struggled to get taken down before the damage was done.
satyrnein··on How to think about task estimation
That is sophisticated estimation. So in order to say a project will take a month, first you'd have to plan it in such detail to break into like 40 half day tasks? That's more detailed than most waterfall shops.
satyrnein··on A clip from Stray got me banned from Twitter
Twitter throws up a jarring sign-in wall if you scroll down more than a few tweets now.

Are you suggesting the father derived no benefit from the arrangement, that he continued to do half of the childcare, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc?
satyrnein··on Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out
What's the corporate interest in impeaching Trump or not? I think that has less to do with corporations and more to do with Republican politicians (correctly) concluding that their Republican voters don't want Trump impeached.
satyrnein··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Hiring Freelancers
This sounds like Salesforce plugins or something. Or at a difference scale, just using Salesforce/SaaS products in general where possible.
satyrnein··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Hiring Freelancers
Incentives matter, but it's not like early code written by founders/employees with equity doesn't need to be cleaned up later.
satyrnein··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
We switched a lot of tables to soft deletes so we could replicate those deletes into our data warehouse. You can also use bin log replication for hard deletes, but every schema change would break it.
satyrnein··on Pursuing the Reunification of Home and Work
You think the stay-at-home partner has all the power?! Perhaps you have never talked to a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage.
satyrnein··on The Continuous Delivery Test
I'd like to see a workflow that meets all the criteria. I was surprised to see the item about deploying directly from your own machine; that seems to contradict the other goals which point to automated pipelines that deploy on merge.
satyrnein··on Not future-proofing
I remember having to redo all the heads because we only connected 5 wires initially, but the next speed level needed all 8. Still, a few hours work for a 10x upgrade, so I couldn't complain!
satyrnein··on Not future-proofing
In the mid 1990s when my parents were building their house, I absolutely could not understand why my dad had me spending the weekend pulling a cat5 cable and 2 coax cables through the studs. The coax ended up being a bad bet, by we got a LOT of value out of that cat5. Even with the advent of wireless much later, we still needed Ethernet to connect access points to the main router.

That was probably our only good bet, though, so I still agree with the punchline!

satyrnein··on As a Crypto Winter Descends, Celebrities Quietly Delete Their NFT Profiles
the convention may have hired a Snoop Dogg look-a-like, “Doop Snogg”, to attend the festivities and inflate the convention’s prestige

Not the real thing, just meant to evoke it, and people will pay for it, despite it being unauthorized, hoping to impress others. I finally get it!

satyrnein··on The business impact of code quality (2017)
"I could have built this faster if we had switched to React last year" ok but roughly how much faster?

We can't even accurately estimate (ahead of time) how long it would take in the existing stack, much less in a different one.

satyrnein··on Controlling My Family’s Smart Home Is Driving Us Mad
I don't use smart bulbs anymore, but I like my smart switches. "Hey Google, Watch TV" and the correct lights dim.
satyrnein··on Controlling My Family’s Smart Home Is Driving Us Mad
I swapped in Lutron Caseta switches, which have been great. Now I have better switches (with dimming built in), and completely separately the switches can take remote commands.
satyrnein··on Do kwon sent $80M a month to secret wallets?
Can you tell us about some of these projects that aren't getting noticed?
satyrnein··on The collapse of complex software
I think I understand what you're getting at, but do you have any examples? Like you said, seeing helps understanding! :-)
satyrnein··on The End of Localhost
In the ideal case, you stamp them out using basically the same docker/terraform/etc you use for managing production.
satyrnein··on The End of Localhost
Localhost isn't free, we buy more expensive laptops for developers than any other teams.
satyrnein··on The End of Localhost
Aren't people moving to cloud dev environments to solve the issue of "it works on my machine (using emulators, etc)"?
satyrnein··on My thoughts about Fly.io (so far) and other newish technology I'm getting into
It really is pretty cool stuff, and it may not be additional complexity for those who are already at the scale where they're dealing with CDNs and caching hot paths, as you say.

For the long tail of Rails/Django/Laravel apps sitting on Heroku or a pair of EC2s in Virginia, who are looking at SPAs with trepidation, I think the case is less obvious.

Sorry if the snark was excessive and thanks for your reply!

satyrnein··on My thoughts about Fly.io (so far) and other newish technology I'm getting into
Tired of SPA complexity? Try server side rendering, now with websockets, globally distributed nodes, read replicas, and eventual consistency!

All of this tech sounds cool, but like the author, I'm unsure when it's called for.

satyrnein··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
Many women also find symmetrical faces attractive, is that also akin to racism? What about a preference for a square jawline? Preference for thick hair?

Is it immoral (akin to racism) for women to have any preferences at all, or just regarding height?

satyrnein··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
Is there also a "conspiracy" against overweight women? Black women? Women with disabilities? These groups also get lower than average messages and responses.
satyrnein··on Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular
Sure, and if Elon Musk gave me all his money, it would alleviate my resentment toward him. But he doesn't owe me anything, and my demand is not reasonable.
satyrnein··on Review: Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a mandatory game for comedy fans
The game was called Passage; I still remember it very clearly. If you chose to form a couple, you wouldn't be able to squeeze into certain spaces to get certain treasure chests. The "message" of that mechanic, that being part of a couple means you have to forego some opportunities in life, isn't particularly controversial or novel, but "feeling" it through the mechanic was really impactful. (And that was just one aspect of that tiny little game!)

Similarly, there was a game called Brothers that delivered its punchline through its mechanics in a powerful way. (I don't want to spoil it for anyone!) I'm not sure if it's art or whatever, but it's something interesting and distinct from what you get in other forms of media.

Meanwhile, I enjoyed both Gris and Celeste, but purely on a mechanical and/or aesthetic level, and not really a connection to any deeper message.
