saturdayplace··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2023)
Edgio | Software Engineer | Remote

Edgio was recently formed via the acquisition of Yahoo Edgecast by Limelight Networks. I am the hiring manager for a pair of roles working on the company's video streaming platform, called Uplynk. This platform has been used by many of the world's largest content producers and broadcasters to simplify their streaming workflows.

I'm looking to grow the team responsible for dynamic HLS and DASH manifest generation with a few folks with 5+ years of development experience. Experience with the following would make you stand out as a candidate:

* Python * HLS & DASH * Fairplay, Widevine, & Playready * Distributed, AWS-based services

saturdayplace··on Show HN: Dear Intern
I was so enamored of the Twitter responses to the HBO intern's test email, that I decided to build a site that could collect and curate these kinds of "I also made a professional mistake, it's OK" stories. Mine is the first user-submitted one on the site, I would love to hear more. Please share your own stories with the rest of the world and normalize learning from mistakes.

Thanks!

saturdayplace··on De-Location Package: Keep Your Career and Live Beyond the Bay Area
Eh, iono. There are plenty of places with tech work outside of the bay area. And having a proven "works well remotely" on the resume seems likely to help find _other_ remote gigs down the road.
saturdayplace··on Shopify has paid over $300k in security exploit bounties
The issue I've read about (I'm not a security practitioner, more like a hobbyist) is that the sheer mass of bogus bounty submissions take valuable time to evaluate. If you start up a bug bounty program, you're essentially signing up to read hordes of submissions that you'll be obligated to check out, the overwhelming majority of which pan out to be nothing. And many (most?) of those, will contain petulant and arrogant demands that the bounty be paid even though the "finding" presented is no actual vulnerability at all.
saturdayplace··on Ask HN: What are your favorite sayings?
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle
saturdayplace··on Ask HN: Current state of parental internet control?
I assume that someone who's configuring their router will also be configuring their children's devices in such a way that the children won't have permissions to make those changes.
saturdayplace··on Ask HN: Current state of parental internet control?
OpenDNS is handy. You

1/ Sign up for an account 2/ Configure your home's router to use their DNS servers 3/ Install an agent on a machine in your home's network, authenticate it with your account credentials. When your router's IP address changes, this agent makes sure to update your account. 4/ Configure the sites or types of site you want to block.

Once you're up and running, If a DNS request from your network matches something that'd be blocked, you'll get re-directed to a "Blocked Content" page.

saturdayplace··on Stockfighter's Jailbreak CTF trainer is live
In case anyone in the thread above didn't know, there is a different set of stockfighter challenges to play that involves writing code that accesses a REST API that be more aligned with Susie's interests in that case.
saturdayplace··on Have any HN members met here and collaborated on a project?
I am under the impression (mistaken? please correct me if I'm wrong) that patio11 and tptacek met here, and have since founded starfighters.io
saturdayplace··on Tell HN: Winners of Apply HN for YC Fellowship 3
My feeling, (like Colin's, I think) is that even if the announcement could have been clearer on this point, it implies that votes & comments wouldn't be the only deciding factors.
saturdayplace··on Tell HN: Apply HN applications now closed, let's discuss the next step
His actual response when a YC partner sincerely offered to work with Pinboard:

> I feel like after seven years, I have a pretty good sense of what bookmarking/archiving needs people have, but am at the limits of what I can personally build. If the votes swing my way, I'd be happy to have a good-faith conversation with you.[0]

saturdayplace··on 20 lines of code that beat A/B testing (2012)
So I googled A/B testing vs Multi-Armed Bandit, and ran into an article that's a useful and informative response to the OP: https://vwo.com/blog/multi-armed-bandit-algorithm/

edit: Ah, 'ReadingInBed beat me to it. tl;dr: Bandit approaches might not _always_ be the best, and they tend to take longer to reach a statistically significant result.

saturdayplace··on Why my mother’s maiden name is nonsense
This is a good idea, if you remember to always tell the same lie. Being required to remember which website I told which lie to can only lead to trouble.
saturdayplace··on Ask HN: Losing Vision – What remote IT jobs are possible?
https://weworkremotely.com/ is a job board specifically for positions that are remote.
saturdayplace··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Moved and seconded
saturdayplace··on Open Web Application Security Project issues new secure coding bible
Definitely +1 on both of these. They're fantastic.
saturdayplace··on YC Updates and Additions
The claim that companies hire to prevent competition seems extraordinary. As posited here it's really nothing more than speculation.
saturdayplace··on E-Prime: English without the verb 'to be'
Seems like a useful exercise.
saturdayplace··on The Starfighter Low-Level Tech Tree
I've heard Patrick make that very assertion.
saturdayplace··on The Starfighter Low-Level Tech Tree
I'm like 99% certain it's in reference to the movie "The Last Starfighter"[0] where the protagonist, an avid player of an arcade game with the same title, finds himself recruited into an alien space fleet based on his stellar performance in the game.

The parallels should hopefully be obvious: have fun playing the game. But if you stand out, it's because you've demonstrated some set of marketable skills that other organizations are looking for. If you've set the 'contact me about potential jobs' bit in your Starfighters profile, they'll spend some effort trying to land you a gig with their client companies.

saturdayplace··on Startup Playbook
Hold the phone. You're hoping to write the bootstrapped SaaS playbook? I know it'd be wrong (and futile) of me to ask you to put off Starfighter to write it, but I'll drop my email (again) into whatever form you'd put up to get an idea of public interest in such a work.
saturdayplace··on Ask HN: What are the best remote-friendly job sites for engineers?
Like with this post, the monthly "Who's Hiring" threads also have many listings where the HN user says "Remote Available," but when browsing to the linked jobs listing, all the positions list a specific geographic location. It always makes me wonder if there's really a remote culture at the company. (See the concerns elsewhere in this thread about being the only remote dev in an organization). When I was looking, it made me think twice about applying for the position. Yes, I imagine it's usually just some 3rd-party HR software that requires a location in the job listing. But if you're looking to hire people, I think removing any doubt in the potential candidate's mind about wether or not there really are remote positions available might be in the company's best interest.
saturdayplace··on McWhopper - Hamburger proposal for Peace
I think this proposal is a brilliant move for Burger King from a PR perspective. Puts the ball firmly in McDonald's court. Now both brands get a goodwill boost for going through with it, but if McDonald's passes they end up looking lame, and BK comes out smelling like roses.

So for the HN angle, this feels like absolutely superb marketing.

saturdayplace··on Talking About Money
This is what happened in my last negotiation, where $X was a 30%-ish raise. They didn't bat an eye, and made an offer of exactly $X. I asked them, "Could we make that $(X + .06*X) and they did.

Negotiate.

saturdayplace··on Ask HN: I Want to Make “The Chronicles of Amber” into a TV Series. How?
> Finally, they told me that at the moment someone allegedly bought an option for a screen version of the book. But, reading between the lines, I realized that they just do not want to work with an unknown person.

Maybe they were just trying to blow you off, but if someone else already owns the option on the original material you're stopped before you even get started. You're definitely welcome to have written your screenplay adaptation, but until you get the TV rights to the original material from whoever owns them, you don't really have a legal leg to stand on for making a commercial adaptation. If I were you, I'd try to track down who owns the rights, and see if you can't sell them your adaptation. Or try and negotiate purchasing the rights.

saturdayplace··on Video games beat interviews to recruit the very best
"¿Por que no los dos?" I think the spirit of Patrick's response is "Knock yourself out." And I get the feeling, having followed what he's had to say about how programmers typically negotiate salaries and consulting opportunities, that he's encountered MANY who truthfully don't know the market value of their skills and are subsequently under-paid. I suspect the condescending tone you're picking up is really just him just trying to shed light on a place he's seen members of the community routinely overlook. There's definitely nothing wrong with earning money making videos. But there exists a group of programmers who honestly don't know how much more they could be making, and I think all he's trying to do is let them know.
saturdayplace··on The Hiring Post
This one had a lot of discussion recently: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9159557
saturdayplace··on An Open Letter to Jessica Livingston About YC's Female Founders Conference
> YC is still stuck in a world of ideas based on controlling others through the creation of debt and claiming lifetime ownership of others' work.

I don't understand this sentiment AT ALL. There is no debt involved, so I don't see any control exerted through those means. And sure, they buy non-controlling ownership of others' work, but that ownership is sold freely. Not to mention the other consideration that lands on the selling side in these transactions. I don't think the sellers are making out nearly as badly as you seem to be implying.

saturdayplace··on Ask HN: I got let go this morning. What should I do next?
"fizzbuzz" is coding exercise, used by companies looking to screen out applicants who claim to be able to code, but in fact cannot. The applicant is asked to write a short program that prints the numbers 1-100 (or whatever). When the number is divisible by 3, instead of printing it, print the word "fizz". When divisibly by 5, print "buzz". When divisible by both, print "fizzbuzz."

To anyone who actually can code, it seems ridiculous that people are applying to coding positions who can't come up with a solution to this, but anecdotally many hiring managers routinely encounter such applicants. I suspect the parent here is using the term "set up a fizzbuzz" as shorthand for "set up some time to see if you can actually cross the bare minimum coding hurdle."

Well, sure they accumulate. So do salaries. If it's not worth the money to your company, don't spend it. Same goes for salaries.
