satsuma··on Algorithms, by Jeff Erickson
thank you for the reference material! i'm a student at central michigan right now and will be heading into my intro. to algorithms class this upcoming semester. i'll be sure to use it to supplement (and not pester you for free answers)

from what i see elsewhere in this thread, you've got quite a good reputation around illinois. i recently lost a favorite professor of my own mid-semester last year, and it made me realize just how much a good instructor means to people. so thank you for being that for students!

satsuma··on Detroit's Big Comeback: Out of Bankruptcy, a Rebirth
a lot of detroit's problems also stems from the existence of grand rapids. i'd imagine if a company wanted a michigan office detroit wouldn't be the first on the list despite being the bigger city.
satsuma··on Users report losing Bitcoin in clever hack of Electrum wallets
cash is a physical entity, though -- i'm not sure there's a parallel to be drawn there
satsuma··on Video game crash of 1983
the video game crash was mostly north america/usa though, wasn't it? from what i've heard europe wasn't as affected by atari's woes and kept chugging along with home computers over consoles.
satsuma··on Twitter's Secret “Guest Mode”
messenger lite doesn't annihilate your battery like the full-featured messenger does, either
satsuma··on The Fall of Schlitz: How Milwaukee’s Famous Beer Became Infamous (2010)

satsuma··on False Advertising for College Is Pretty Much the Norm
american high schools aren't proper schools in the sense that they educate their students for life ahead, they're day care. they encourage rote memorization and regurgitation of data instead of critical thinking and processing of the world around us. if you memorize and regurgitate to a passable standard (which is set quite low, at least in the rural public school i attended) they shake your hand and send you out on your way.

i think proper college reform needs to start lower, and make proper adults out of our high school grads instead of requiring four years of paid-for university to accomplish that. unfortunately, i'm no expert and i don't have the foggiest idea where you'd start with that.

satsuma··on How Does Mastodon Work?
isn't the point of twitter that you follow only who you want and other people's garbage doesn't show up if you don't want it? what makes mastodon different in that regard?
satsuma··on AWS icon quiz
7/20. i have never used aws. most of my points were from the matching section.

those are some garbage icons.

satsuma··on Apple Removes Infowars from Podcast Directory
ehh, i'm thinking more colbert report's take on conservative tv. john definitely has the wacky "what will he say next" down, but it's not a satire of aj. i'm looking more for someone who speaks like aj does, about conspiracies as dumb if not dumber than gay frogs.
satsuma··on Apple Removes Infowars from Podcast Directory
arguably having infowars be high up on the "most downloaded" podcast list would be worse. especially if they categorize themselves as news or politics instead of entertainment.
satsuma··on Apple Removes Infowars from Podcast Directory
if he was playing a character, and had disclaimers as such at the beginning, middle, and ending of his podcast, i'd love alex jones. kind of a "what would he say next?" sort of thing, mixed with plenty of onion-esque satire.

the problem is he's not. he holds these beliefs, and with his platform, he's leading other people to hold them as well. some are fairly benign, like gay frogs. others are downright sick, like calling the sandy hook kids crisis actors.

what i'm getting at is someone needs to mirror him, with disclaimers that everything that comes out of the host's mouth is ludicrous, asinine, and should never be considered rational thought. like the jackass intros, "you, and all your stupid little friends, should never try this at home."

satsuma··on Pyxel: A retro game development environment in Python
well, we were middle schoolers being introduced to programming through video games. we were making basic 2d games like asteroids and tankwar, nothing with shaders.
satsuma··on Show HN: A map that shows you how far you can go for a given time or distance
this map does not like michigan, at all:

https://oalley.net/map/ba2

specifically the upper peninsula. it looks like it doesn't have enough data as you go towards the rural north, which doesn't shock me at all, and extrapolates from that.

satsuma··on Pyxel: A retro game development environment in Python
oh man, processing. i did a weeklong video game programming "camp" back when i was in middle school and processing was the language we used. definitely easy to pick up and use.
satsuma··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
places definitely don't want to expend resources hiring someone for three weeks just to have them leave, then come back, in a cycle. they want 3 months all in a row.
satsuma··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying?
big second on cognitive behavioral therapy. it helped me so much with overcoming similar phobias.
satsuma··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying?
as a kid i was scared shitless of flying. the idea of being blasted across the country in a pressurized metal tube was overwhelming to me. when my family was planning a trip to orlando for disney world, i contemplated staying behind with family so i didn't have to get on that plane. in the end i went, and overcame my fear of flying. now, i prefer air travel to just about anything else.

part of what helped me is my mother's job working as the business manager for a local hangar and airplane mechanic. hanging around the hangar i saw how many hours went in to maintaining even the smallest two-seat planes. i heard about how many hours pilots logged before they could even look at a small regional jet. the mechanics, pilots, and engineers working on those commercial planes are all the best of the best.

turbulence: when a plane is between 20-40k feet, what feels like a catastrophic drop is, subjectively, not a big deal. sure it's scary and the plane bounces around but the plane will not go down in turbulence. it may drop 10, 20, 50 feet. but you still have 19950 to go before problems arise.

finally, don't psych yourself up reading the manuals about what to do if things go wrong. don't even listen to the presentation. put some headphones on and look out the window at all the people working hard to make sure you and yours arrive at your destination safe and sound.

hope this helped even a little bit. flying is stressful even when you're not scared, but it allows for so much freedom.

satsuma··on Tencent loses $143B in market value
depends on what sphere you're looking at. the overwatch league is poised to take over in the esports scene while fortnite is gobbling up the casual playerbase.

note that this is north america focused, i have no clue about europe, south korea, or china.

satsuma··on Tencent loses $143B in market value
major flashbacks to bush's white house shootout. i wonder if they still host all the old games?

honestly i wonder about the flash games sites in general. what happens when flash finally gets brought behind the barn?

satsuma··on Amazon Dark Patterns
the google play store does this -- reviews left on older versions of applications will be denoted as such. the developer response to comments is also made public, so a bad review on a 1.0 release could have the dev apologizing and saying it's fixed for 1.1, with the current version being 1.1.5, and one could infer (with enough faith in the developer) that the issue is resolved.
satsuma··on Why I Ripped the Same CD 300 Times
two years ago, i think? i stopped torrenting music when i got a streaming subscription, because i discover music easier if it's streamed and i'm not enough of an audiophile to discern between 320kbps mp3 and flac.
satsuma··on Take Off to 1960s Space Motels
there's a lot of awesome styling themes you could do for 80s and 90s:

80s - hair metal, synthwave/synthpop (think hotline miami, vice city, etc), retro games pre/post crash. all in the 8 bit c64/atari color palette.

90s - grunge and the internet revolution. i think we still need some distance from the 90s to really define the nostalgic points, but a lot of the last few years is undoubtedly swallowed in the new millenia hype.

satsuma··on L-theanine, a constituent in tea, and its effect on mental state (2008) [pdf]
cursory research led me to believe that l-theanine on its own doesn't do much of anything. adding caffeine seems to be the ticket to the proposed improvements.

wonder if there's a way to package l-theanine and caffeine together into one supplement. maybe that's what those gas station "super focus!!1" pills use? i might give it a try this upcoming semester, i generally don't mind being a supplements guinea pig.

satsuma··on Ask HN: How old are you (optional) and what was the last thing that you learned?
21. i'm more capable than i give myself credit for, and i need to remember that. some days it feels like all i know is what i don't know
satsuma··on Bay Area cities are cracking down on free food at tech companies
i don't even mind charging for meals, but not having to spend most of my lunch break driving for easy food would be a huge plus. guess i know what to look for once i graduate.
satsuma··on Bay Area cities are cracking down on free food at tech companies
as someone who works in a place a solid few miles from restaurants, and has a break room with a few microwaves/a toaster oven as well as a vending machine with gas station tier food... how common are workplace cafeterias like this? is it just sv megacompanies or is it smaller firms across the country?
satsuma··on Bitcoin just jumped above $8,000 and is now up 20% in one week
selfish perhaps, but i just want the damn thing to settle so i can get a damn graphics card at msrp again
satsuma··on PeerTube, the “Decentralized YouTube”, succeeds in crowdfunding
i'm not sure that's a valid argument. cars have a clearly tangible benefit above riding horseback, even early automobiles. what's the tangible benefit to a decentralized system like this other than twitter/facebook/social media company not owning your data?

the parent comment to my initial post said the absence of censorship, but anecdotally the kinds of people i've seen going to "censorship-free" alternative sites are the kinds i don't particularly care to associate with. voat.co being the "shining" example

satsuma··on PeerTube, the “Decentralized YouTube”, succeeds in crowdfunding
how many of those have never seen real use/adoption above hobbyists/diehards, though? irc and sms is about it from that list. it was a drag getting people to drop skype for telegram, despite telegram being (in my opinion) more user friendly. getting them to go to something like gnusocial would be damn near impossible.

decentralized youtube might be easier to get rolling, on the other hand. all it takes is sharing your videos through it instead of youtube. think about how most people found youtube -- someone linked them a video, statistically likely to be evolution of dance. no reason that can't be done with peertube.
