satsuma··on ISO Warning Signs
you figure, kids still know what a floppy disk represents despite the tech being obsolete for 20 years now. skeuomorphism means designs like phone handsets retain some informational value long after the actual, original use is gone.
satsuma··on Meta is raising the price of the Quest 2 to 400 USD
new games are starting to retail at $70 usd compared to $60 previously... that was the canary and this is the lightheaded feeling of carbon monoxide poisoning
satsuma··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
it's a sad state of affairs when the shoplifters make more than loss prevention.
satsuma··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
shoplifting absolute necessities and life essentials is a morally light grey area. it's stealing, but when the alternative is starvation, there's a bit of leeway.

for everything else, it becomes this twisted worldview where shoplifters believe they're owed something by "the system." or because it's walmart/target instead of mom and pop's corner shop, it's like they're the modern day robin hood. the ability of our brains to think themselves into defending its own behavior, as immoral as it may be, is fascinating.

satsuma··on Mundane chores are all the rage in gaming
i'd argue factorio is closer to electrical engineering than software dev, but it definitely scratches the same itch of a well-engineered solution to a novel problem.
satsuma··on Last public payphone removed from Manhattan streets
were cell phones that common in 2001? i thought payphones were still more commonly used at that point
satsuma··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
> I greatly look forward to tech companies who prefer written documentation (eg, Notion) over Slack.

this is (at least how i'm reading it) a similar issue i've seen in hobby spaces that have moved from forums to platforms like discord for support. discord is great for right now collaboration but the archival process is like pulling teeth. it leads to repeated questions being asked because threads aren't often used and one problem's solution is mishmashed in with ten other conversations.

sometimes there are links to a wiki in the discord, which is nice. but it's still only sometimes, and if you have a problem that hasn't come up yet, you're stuck navigating discord.

satsuma··on No, you can’t save £30 per year by switching off your “standby” devices
i lived with my mother in law for a short time when i was between apartments. she would occasionally go around the house and unplug all of my devices in the early mornings before I got up. this was originally just the xbox connected to the living room tv, but if I had my laptop plugged in (work or personal) it would get unplugged too. i don't know if it was a petty "power move" (pardon the pun) or if she genuinely thought the standby mode appliances were bleeding her dry, but she's a senior electrical engineer so she should really know better.

i was considering confronting her and putting in a kill-a-watt and paying her directly the couple bucks a month my standby devices used in power, but i figured that wasn't worth it.

satsuma··on Overhauling Mario 64's code to reach 30 FPS and render 6x faster on N64 [video]
it's worth noting that the virtual console (wii, wii u) releases are built off of the original nstc edition, meaning backwards long jumping is in play. but the most recent 3d all stars edition is based off of shindou, meaning blj's are not possible.
satsuma··on Ask HN: MacBooks seems to be the only viable option these days
typing this on a dell precision-class laptop and yeah, it's a dream. even between this and my latitude (which is still business class but one tier down) it's noticeable.

there are nice quality laptops to be had, they're just expensive enough that apple becomes competitive price-wise.

satsuma··on ‘Electric’ chopsticks that make food seem more salty
> In a 1970 survey, The New York Times suggested a consensus definition of a minicomputer as a machine costing less than US$25,000 (equivalent to $174,000 in 2021), with an input-output device such as a teleprinter and at least four thousand words of memory, that is capable of running programs in a higher level language, such as Fortran or BASIC.

i think your regular off the shelf fitbit could fit this description... maybe you'd have to stretch the definition of input-output device, but otherwise it makes sense

satsuma··on Mastodon for Android
i think i've tried to use mastodon twice now, today begins the third attempt.
satsuma··on Mastodon for Android
especially because that can be a very tight venn diagram
satsuma··on Little rant about GNOME's file manager (a.k.a. Nautilus)
explorer also allows you to create a new window in a new process now, but not using a keyboard shortcut as far as i can tell. you have to go file > new window > new window using a new process. finicky, but possible.
satsuma··on Amazon workers at 100 more facilities want to unionize: Amazon Labor Union
probably not unless they're forced to. retail lost money for amazon until very recently -- aws was the only thing keeping amazon afloat for years and years
satsuma··on The smallest and worst HDMI display
well, problem solved then! no need to update cec anymore
satsuma··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
i feel like it's something that, on its own isn't worth much, but could be sold to a group like goodrx or webmd or something like that for a decent payout.
satsuma··on Reinstating our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
i came from a rural high school that didn't have any ap/ib courses. i wonder how much that affected my college applications.

i still got to go to the college of my choice (fire up chips!) but i have to wonder -- if i was able to boost my gpa using ap/ib courses, would i have received more scholarship opportunities/better offers from other schools?

satsuma··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
i prefer it being around, if only because i come from an area that, in the winter time, has 8 hours of daylight to kick off the season. it's nicer to have that start at 8:30 am instead of 9:30
satsuma··on Spending more on retaining developers reduces the cost of hiring developers
it could also be there because the work is for a company that some have moral objections to, like raytheon or meta. i think i remember a story on here that meta had to highball offers for similar positions when compared to their contemporaries because of how they've been torched in the media lately.

i think of it like free agency in sports -- unsuccessful teams, teams in small/undesirable markets, and teams with unliked coaching/management will have to pay a premium to attract talent. why go to detroit, a basement dweller team with a coach who is universally reviled when you can go to los angeles and be on a winning team with a respected front office for a modest pay cut?

satsuma··on Vladimir Putin is pushing Russia into past: Maybe a generation, maybe a century
i'm not a leader of any sort of country, but i fail to see how shelling and invading ukraine fixes that.

even if it were a quick and easy three day excursion to kyiv, congratulations! your newly annexed ukraine is now... right on the edge of nato poland. and other countries that were on the fence might be more likely to join, lest they be next in russia's sights.

granted, a lot of this analysis is from the standpoint that nato had no plans to be militarily aggressive with russia. if you assume nato was gearing up to use ukraine as a means to get invasion forces into russia, then that shifts things. but there's no evidence that was ever on the table.

satsuma··on Apple Mac Studio
and it makes total sense! computers are slowly transitioning back to professional/enthusiast/educational focused as casual internet browsing continues to move onto mobile devices. you don't have people buying laptops to browse the internet on their couch anymore.
satsuma··on Ask HN: What is the most unique website you’ve come across on the internet?
but did you sign up for the newzletter?
satsuma··on The Revenge of the Hot Water Bottle
i should really bust mine out more. i've had one for ages and used it a bunch in college then just... stopped.
satsuma··on FalsiScan: Make it look like a PDF has been hand signed and scanned
on windows i find myself bouncing around a lot between pdf viewers, choosing between lightweight but feature sparse options (sumatra) and heavier, more featured programs (acrobat, foxit)

i've never thought about replacing preview.

satsuma··on Reverse engineering Wordle
i'd argue the lack of consistency is more annoying, not less.
satsuma··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
see: meta/facebook having to raise salaries to get interest. there's a morality "tax" you have to pay if your employees are not proud of what your firm does.
satsuma··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
i remember a post on reddit's sysadmin subreddit a while back of a disillusioned help desk tech asking about unions. the majority response was basically this -- even in help desk, your value is high enough that you can pretty easily find equivalent or better work fast by putting yourself out there. tech corps need the workers more than the workers need tech
satsuma··on A Tumblr developer on the App Store approval process
>> . This is what people who download the app will do, so they’re trying out real scenarios that will happen

> let's ban browsers then or chat apps or sharing apps

you joke, but telegram had to implement porn-filters for group chats on ios/macos.

satsuma··on Thoughts on Modern C++ and Game Dev
+1 for csharp, got to use it in an introductory unity class and fell in love with it.
