satiric··on Goiânia Accident
When you make a post, I think HN asks you to summarize the article in the comments (or something like that, I haven't submitted anything in a while)
satiric··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
Ah I see, thanks.
satiric··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
How do you detect that it's plugged in? Just detecting voltage would mean that you'd unplug it and it would stay energized, right?
satiric··on The only road in London where you have to drive on the right
Neither 1/36th or 1/12th are used, and the other two aren't fractions. We don't say six and a twelfth feet, we say six feet one inch. With distance, fractions are only used for fractions of an inch (apart from trivial uses like "one and a half miles").
satiric··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
Plugs and sockets have the wrong gender for this. On the battery, you'd have a male plug with live 240v contacts, ready to short against anything, or anyone, that's conductive. This is the same reason why male-to-male extension cords are labeled "suicide cords".
satiric··on The only road in London where you have to drive on the right
When we use fractions for measurements, the denominator is virtually always a power of two. The only one I can think of that isn't is a fifth of alcohol, which is really just its own unit at this point.
satiric··on The only road in London where you have to drive on the right
To know that 0.32 m is smaller than 43 cm I have to actively think, but I'm guessing you don't. I've never had to think about 3/4 vs 1/2. Even 5/16ths vs 1/4 is intuitive for me.
satiric··on Medici family mystery may be solved after more than 400 years
Let's test it out. I'll become pope, you become the emperor, and we'll see who gets there first.
satiric··on Medici family mystery may be solved after more than 400 years
Nah, ditch the wife. Become a cardinal in the Catholic church, then get elected pope. From there it should be fairly trivial to re-establish the Papal States to their largest extent.
satiric··on The biggest steam locomotive is whistle-stopping across the U.S.
This one burns oil, not coal.
satiric··on Hacker News front page as a site
This is Hackernews - the unreadable font size is a feature, not a bug
satiric··on The real cost of owning a home
If you kill the lawn, won't the invasive plants take over?
satiric··on Toshifumi Suzuki, founder of Seven-Eleven Japan, has died
Sorry, complaints about our payment policy are handled through the Complaintly app, which is available for Apple and Android devices.
satiric··on You can no longer Google the word 'disregard'
The nirvana album doesn't have a space - for me, searching for "nevermind" gets me straight to the album
satiric··on Disney erased FiveThirtyEight
Interesting in learning more - what bill is this that was passed by Clinton?
satiric··on Meta blocks human rights accounts from reaching audiences in Arabia and the UAE
Looks like the original title is too long for Hackernews
satiric··on New arXiv policy: 1-year ban for hallucinated references
So you just write whatever you want, then find a source for it later? I don't think you understand how this is supposed to work
satiric··on Magic: The Gathering took me from N2 to Japanese fluency
Except "usually mistaken" doesn't apply here, since it's often true.
satiric··on Mine, an IDE for Coalton and Common Lisp
Yes, you can expect people here to read your comments and judge them by their content. Were you expecting otherwise?
satiric··on ChatGPT's latest stylistic quirk is sinister, infuriating – and everywhere
Missed opportunity to call the article "ChatGPT's latest stylistic quirk isn't just sinister or infuriating—it's everywhere."

This has been making its way around the internet for a while, but in case anyone hasn't seen it, Wikipedia's article "Signs of AI Writing" is a good read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:AISIGNS

satiric··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Of course the proof in the pudding is in the eating, but just saying that they want to do this stuff is at least a slight improvement over before, where we mostly just saw apathy and enshittification. It's also a promise that people can hold them to if they fail.
satiric··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
Mountain time is ambiguous due to Arizona, and yet we still use that phrase. Hawaii-Aleutian time is also ambiguous: the Aleutian islands do daylight savings, but Hawaii doesn't.

Casual speech doesn't use the city names (like America/Los_Angeles for pacific time); presumably we'd have Pacific time (America/Los_Angeles) and BC time (an update of the existing America/Vancouver). If Washington's time change ever gets approved it would presumably become simply Washington time (America/Seattle maybe?).

satiric··on New accounts on HN more likely to use em-dashes
Preventing pasting would drastically reduce how often people cite their sources; no one wants to hand copy a long url.
satiric··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
Roadster launch is supposed to be on April 1st... Hard to think of any response other than "once bitten, twice shy"
satiric··on 10th Person
I think I've been this person before, but I've also been the person that makes the meeting go on for 20 minutes longer than necessary by bringing up stuff that doesn't need to be talked about in a big meeting. I've also been the one who thought he knew enough to try and force his opinion, when actually I was just being confidently wrong and not listening to others. So there's a time and a place.
satiric··on A shortage of tenors
In John Adams' Harmonium, I was surprised to learn the basses go into treble clef for a second. I hadn't sung untransposed treble clef in many years! I think it was only an F#4 or A4 or something but it felt real strange to be singing in the treble clef again.
satiric··on The RCE that AMD won't fix
Here it is on archive.org, since the original was taken down (hey, the cat's out of the bag now): https://web.archive.org/web/20260205155934/https://mrbruh.co...
satiric··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
I use an addon for firefox called "Hide shorts for Youtube™". Works just fine.
satiric··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
The g-code is not being distributed, because it's specific to each printer, filament, etc. G-code is not the same thing as a STP or STL file.
satiric··on We can’t send mail farther than 500 miles (2002)
It would have made for a great puzzler.
