sasas··on Ericsson to lay off 8,500 employees
> I don't know anyone who has bought anything from Ericsson in over a decade

In 2021, Ericsson held the largest % market share in radio access network equipment and software [1] (that's what your mobile phone speaks to over the air)

That means that you likely do know of companies that have purchased significant volumes of products from Ericsson, although the statistical probability of this fact deviates depending on what country you live in.

sasas··on Ericsson to lay off 8,500 employees
Ericsson literally hires people full time to work on Erlang.

Think about network functions that where these languages do not make sense; then you will find they are not used. You wouldn't write a packet processing router in any of those languages (aka UPF). High availability, fault tolerant applications for NAS and non-NAS signalling speaking to the gNodeB/UEs - same deal.
sasas··on Ericsson to lay off 8,500 employees
What you heard is completely and utterly incorrect information. It's used extensively across multiple products and business areas.

If the parent was typing the above message on a phone attached to their telecom network, there is a high probability their user and control plane traffic was going through Ericsson systems.

Yep - picked up one from eBay for $20 AUD. Fully compatible with their software. Amazing.
sasas··on The FBI Identified a Tor User
It's not a good idea, but not for the reason stated here.

The TOR client will establish a tunnel OVER the VPN to the entry node, so the VPN provider will only see this encrypted traffic. The VPN server cannot spy on you.

When you connect to TOR it carefully selects your circuit for diversity over the Internet between each hop (for example avoiding your entry and exit nodes not being on the same service provider). By using a VPN your opening the possibility for something to go wrong here.

Have you considered combining your enjoyment for audio production with your programming skills to develop audio plugins? This is also something that could be monetised, although the VST market seems to be pretty saturated. Start as a side project and see where it leads !

sasas··on How sugar and fat affect your brain
This is not the case in Australia who has some of the highest costs ciggies [1]. FMC = factory made ciggies. RYO = Roll your own.

> The 25% tax increases was associated with immediate (−0·745 percentage points; 95% CI −1·378 to −0·112) and sustained reductions in prevalence (monthly trend −0·023 percentage points; −0·044 to −0·003), which were driven by reductions in the prevalence of smoking of FMC. The prevalence of smoking of RYO increased between May, 2010, and November, 2013, after the 25% tax increase. At the start of the pre-announced annual 12·5% increases, we observed an immediate reduction in smoking (−0·997 percentage points; −1·632 to −0·362), followed by decreasing overall prevalence (monthly trend −0·044 percentage points; −0·063 to −0·026) due to ongoing decreases in the prevalence of FMC smoking and a cessation of increases in the prevalence of smoking of RYO.

I’m not sure what the price is now, something like $40 a box of 20? These days you hardly see anyone smoke normal cigarettes.

sasas··on AIOC: Ham Radio All-in-One-Cable
This discussion brings back fond memories of watching the “slow scan TV” over packet radio ever so slowly rendering low res images of a family we used to talk to in the US from Australia on my dads rig with his 60ft antenna out the back. This was the early 1990s before the Internet was a thing. We ended up travelling to meet that family in Texas in 1994.

I recall in Texas there was some ham repeaters that patched you into the local phone network using DTMF, but can’t recall exactly what it was called. Phone calls in Australia at the time were costly so it was really a novelty.

LFSR algorithms are super interesting. Fabien Sanglard documents how it was used in Wolfenstein 3D's 'Fizzle effect' [1]. This is also covered in his book on the development of that game [2].

A detailed write up that goes into a bit of mathematics with code examples is 'Demystifying the LFSR' [3].

The 'Computerphile' Youtube channel did a whole episode on LFSR last year which is very accessible, highly recommended [4].

sasas··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
Thanks for taking the time to respond. As SuptleCrypto's states themselves:

> Warning: This API provides a number of low-level cryptographic primitives. It's very easy to misuse them, and the pitfalls involved can be very subtle. Even assuming you use the basic cryptographic functions correctly, secure key management and overall security system design are extremely hard to get right, and are generally the domain of specialist security experts.

Errors in security system design and implementation can make the security of the system completely ineffective.

Given the potential volume of people's personal data that might be stored, this is certainly an area you would want to get right.

sasas··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
Your response indicates you may have limited knowledge on the topic.

> what do you think is more likely, that the tiny team of 6 invested a ton of time reinventing the wheel with a custom in-house AES implementation

AES is a cryptographic primitive. No one ever implements their own. What developers implement is the cryptographic system - the block cipher mode, initialisation vectors, rounds, salting etc. It all very easy to get this wrong. Their site does state they use GCM cipher mode which is the right choice (say over ECB, CBC…)

> which you can verify with wireshark

Viewing encrypted material in a packet capture is meaningless and provides zero assurances

> What exactly are your concerns, given that the data isn't encrypted locally in the first place?

The encrypted data in their cloud solution is adequately protected.

Companies that take end to end encryption seriously will generally provide details on how they went about their cryptographic system.

For example, is the encryption key derived from the password? If so what is the key derivation function? How many rounds didn’t get select? These are generally the responsibility of the developer to responsibly choose.

From the link:

> AES-256 is a military-grade encryption specification that's widely used in for example online banking.

The term “military grade” is meaningless and if anything raises a red flag (at least to me). What would be more useful is a detailed spec on the implementation.

Are the crypto routines implemented in house or has a well tested library been used? If in house, had there been an external code audit done? What were the results ?

sasas··on How to secure your notes and home network when using a company laptop?
I run a virtual machine on the work laptop that has a wire guard vpn connection out.

The note taking took used is Joplin which syncs encrypted notes to the cloud (here free Dropbox account).

There are many ways to skin a cat, and this way is not bullet proof as I’m still typing on the keyboard and keystrokes of course can be monitored. Also screenshots.

The only fool proof solution is to use a seperate computer all together. Know your threat model and adjust accordingly. This is what I have done.

Ordered this two days ago on Amazon and it arrived just an hour ago to my door step. Very happy!

Does Amazon keep a certain level of stock across in counties the globe? If so how is the stock quantity calculated per country and city? Or are they printed on demand?

Thanks Fab! Added to the bookshelf along with your Doom and Wolfenstein books. Can’t wait for the next.

For me personally what has worked is going to bed early and waking up early before the world's distractions begin. This gives me 1 to 2 hours every day uninterrupted to work on projects. Why it's working better for me then staying up late to tinker is because I'm guaranteed not to have excuses or distractions such as working into the evening on my day job.

Added bonus not waking up tired. Took me about a month to adapt to this routine given I've never - ever - been a morning person in my life. And I'm still not if I go to bed late.

Completely cut out all alcohol which ensures better quality sleep - ready to start the day by working on a fun project.

sasas··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
It's all "who said what" until Mick shows screenshots of timestamps embedded in the audio files - direct proof that Marty outright lied. This could be important if there is any litigation made against Mick for this post if they attempt to destroy him financially by going to court.
sasas··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
The original post by Marty always crossed my mind when listening to the OST sound track. It never really added up. Mick always came across a person with integrity - both artistic and otherwise. Now my mind can be put at rest.

The behavior of Marty in the way it's described comes across classic narcissistic behaviors. Hopefully Mick has learned to recognize this early on in future engagements and to tread very carefully. This applies to all people in power in companies. Do not trust until that trust is earnt, no matter how friendly or forthcoming they appear.

I learnt this early in my career and can (hopefully) can spot these people quickly before they gain too much leverage. Give them nothing that can be used against you because there is a good chance it will come back to bite.

> Last I heard he was arrested a few years back for some stuff I won't mention here..

Is this article about the person? [1]

"Music School Owner Accused of Molesting Two Young Students"

According to this article [2], he outright lied.

"Presumably to get her on board, Art Data told Heinemann a huge lie while negotiating a contract. She was told by Randy that the game was 90% complete and just needed a few bug fixes. The reality, of course, was that development had barely started – Art Data had nothing but a long list of empty promises."

Also the individual doesn't appear to hold much business acumen:

"With DOOM now in a “shippable” (but far from finished) state, Randy Scott went ahead and did something magnificently stupid. He requested 50,000 copies to be printed, notching up $150K in licensing and manufacturing fees from 3DO in the process. The 3DO’s user base was sitting at around 250K at the time, with the system’s big releases selling somewhere between 10K-20K"
