saralily··on Why I still Lisp
Anyone know of something like Rails for a Lisp?
saralily··on How can I get list of textbooks being used in top colleges?
Go to the website for the department. For public colleges the syllabi have to be available. Sometimes this means poking an administrator.

But remember, they are top schools usually in spite of, not because of, the textbook selection.

saralily··on Rollerball Pens of 2021
Put a Montblanc rollerball cartridge in a Pilot G2.
saralily··on Fastmail was down
We should distinguish between fastmail being down and access to it being down.
saralily··on Fastmail was down
This does not happen to me and I have used Fastmail with Safari for seven years. Could be an interaction with an add-on? You also might try beta.fastmail.com.
saralily··on Show HN: Amplication – Instantly Generate Node.js Apps with GraphQL and REST API
Can you just make some page that doesn't save anything so we can see what you mean by "visual"? Or embed a youtube preview?
saralily··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
My phone is not a home. It’s a filament in a fabric of affordances. I rely on others to support those affordances. I pay for some of them with money. I don’t want a castle. I want a society.
saralily··on I Want to Fix Goodreads
Everyone's talking about recommendations. I don't use GoodReads recommendations at all. It's a social network with a focus on books where people will actually read and discuss books and book reviews. It's also a good way of chronicling what books you read. I wish they'd focus more on that part.
saralily··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
i guess more friction will wear the nub down more but it's not a big effect
saralily··on Build tools around workflows, not workflows around tools
What have you done with all these tools, so fitted to your workflows? What, other than the tools, have you made? How have these tools helped you build a better world for other people? There are new tools, now, yes, custom-made to fit your hands, but what of the rest of the world?
saralily··on Chat Bubble Blindness
This relative percentage stuff is silly.
saralily··on To Get More Replies, Say Less (2017)
If the response to a question isn't actionable, it's a bad question, not a problem with the question's granularity.
saralily··on Build your next app with a graph database
Historical entrenchment is not a chance occurrence.
saralily··on Zettlr – FOSS markdown editor for personal knowledge management and publishing
This will fall on deaf ears, but if you have to title a note, it's not a Zettelkasten.
saralily··on Google will delete new accounts' data by default in 18 months
Sure. Still saves space. Also closes over the envelope of their legal exposure.
saralily··on Google will delete new accounts' data by default in 18 months
Data exhaust older than a month is not monetizable for them. This lets them save space and seem nice while nothing changes.
saralily··on Apple, ARM, and Intel
Depends on what you mean by performance. The same speed with double or triple battery life would be worth it.
saralily··on A History of Clojure [pdf]
As a language it is a work of wonder and it focused and refines thinking about programming. Learning it will make you a better programmer in whatever language or paradigm you more commonly use.

As a tool for building things it varies. I only know about the web, and on the web it's probably best as a secondary language to do heavy lifting as a service rather that the backbone of a SaaS, where Django or Rails will get you where you want to be faster. Trying to do fairly common web stuff in Clojure is a lot more work and happens at a much lower level of abstraction, even if you use curated selections of libraries like Luminus. The focus on libraries over frameworks is enticing for some engineers who want to spend a long time building reliable and totalized systems, but for quickly building out features it leaves a lot to be desired. The ecosystem also assumes you are going to make an SPA in ClojureScript. (That said, Fulcro is fascinating if you are committed to the SPA way of doing things; the way it manages data flow seems unique, at least to me.)

saralily··on Times New Roman alternatives: You can do better (2013)
Fitzcarraldo makes Times New Roman sing. It's fine if you give attention to other aspects of typography.

saralily··on How to Become a Hacker
We would be a lot better off if this term went away.
saralily··on Review: Lamy Safari (2008)
The barrels of these crack easily. Go with TWSBI.
saralily··on Notion for everyone
Lots of folks would argue that's a feature that exposes a problem in the conceptualization and modeling of a domain.
saralily··on WorldBrain's Memex: Bookmarking for the power users of the web
That doesn't seem like a feature.
saralily··on It’s Time to Get Back to RSS
Some of us never left. Reading this is weird, like someone "rediscovering" your suburban house.
saralily··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
This makes me miss CoffeeScript. Ah, well.
saralily··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
To relax.
saralily··on Ruby Next: A Transpiler for Ruby
You can use JRuby and then have access to both library ecosystems.
saralily··on Notion encourages busy-work
I agree with this.

I've collapsed everything to Workflowy for myself, and Basecamp for projects with collaboration, or that may someday need significant collaboration. Documentation lives in repos in text files. Everything else starts to feel like busywork.

saralily··on Build a real-time Twitter clone with LiveView and Phoenix 1.5
Seriously. I would love to work at this level of abstraction in Clojure, but to do something that is trivial in Rails with something like Devise is a chore in Clojure, and you have to put it all together yourself. Of course this makes it excellent for learning, but not so great for deadlines. More and more I think I might've made a mistake trying to do basic CRUD web stuff in Clojure for my current project.
saralily··on Wekan: Open-source, trello-like kanban
I'm talking about physically moving cards from one column to another. The skeuomorphism is preserved there.
