sanmon3186··on Silicon Valley thought India was its future, now things have changed
>But this quickly disintegrated, and the bargain tech execs drove in embracing an already-notorious figure like Modi became much harder. In 2016, India blocked Facebook’s “Free Basics” initiative, an attempt by the company to offer free internet access through a network of Facebook-approved sites, out of concern that the program would have created unfair tiers for internet access;

I wonder why author thinks that "free basics" was a great idea that was crushed by Modi.

sanmon3186··on Police in India visited Twitter offices over ‘manipulated media’ label
World would be better place if we don't take sides. Most if not all real world issues comes in shades for grey. In this case the controversy indeed started on Twitter. Twitter clearly took a side, and hence owes explanation on why it thinks it is a case of "manipulated media". Did Govt of India require to send trooper to deliver the notice? Absolutely no. As usual, it overreacted.
sanmon3186··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
I seriously don’t understand, how whatever you wrote relates to the original comment.
sanmon3186··on Facebook ‘looking into’ hiding of posts calling for PM’s resignation in India
To be fair, anyone looking for oxygen in the current situation would assume it is for Covid. Not saying 88 old grandpa of his cousin did not deserve attention, but the guy got called from cabinet ministry, thrice.
sanmon3186··on India's massive COVID surge puzzles scientists
I think OP meant antibiotics, not antivirals.
sanmon3186··on Products purchased at Apple Store in India cannot be refunded or exchanged
> I am so ashamed of being an indian. Indians are the people who don’t put the shopping cart back in its place and just leave it in the parking lot and the rest of the people can’t park their cars.

I am not sure how misuse of Apple services is related to people leaving carts in the parking lots. Yes, these are civic sense issues but a) how common do you find designated places for carts in the parking? Hell, how many times do you even find a parking b) It takes time for people to adopt something new. 95% of Indian are still shopping in local Kirana shops and placing the stuff directly in cotton or re-cycled plastic bags.

Generally, civic sense is proportionate to resource per capita. While you are in the USA, pls observe this behaviour on black friday sales.

sanmon3186··on Send Payments in India with WhatsApp
WhatsApp payment is step-1 of many, that would make jiomart the Indian super-app, like wechat.
sanmon3186··on Write code that is easy to delete, not easy to extend (2016)
Code that is easy to delete is also easy to extend.
sanmon3186··on How To Be An Anti-Casteist
Born in a remote Indian village, studied in towns, worked for a decade in the US and now living in a tier-1 Indian city for the last 6-7 years. Never in my life I observed any kind of bias against christians or muslims at workplace.

Coming to the cast issues, there was a post here last week on the same topic. I extended the discussion to a WhatsApp group of 70+ colleagues/friends who come from different backgrounds. I wanted to validate if I am the odd one, who has almost never observed cast based issues either. After two days of long discussion, we came to a conclusion that we tend to show more affinity to the people who speak our native language or/and come from same regional roots, than our cast and religion.

Not denying that that the later doesn't exist at all, I feel this whole topic is too exaggerated.

Disclaimer: My experience is limited to 20 years of while collar profession (only).

sanmon3186··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35
You pretty much summarised “the power of now” by Eckhart Tolle.
sanmon3186··on UPI: India's Unified Payments Interface
VPA based on just the phone numbers may be convenient, it can lead to frauds. At least in India where - for most part - phone numbers aren’t treated like one’s personal data. Apps like Truecaller make it worse. Imagine receiving tons of involuntary charity requests on your UPI app, waiting for you to pay.

If not fraud, it will clutter the whole experience of UPI payments.

sanmon3186··on One hour of slow breathing changed my life
Absolutely. You do need professional who understands the benefits and potential side effects. If done wrongly, it can mess things up.

Anecdotal, but I tried anulum vilom ten years back as a remedy for general anxiety, went overboard with no proper guidance, and my BP shot up. It took me a while to understand that the key is to go slow and increase your practice slowly.

sanmon3186··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
This ban is primarily to satiate anti-China sentiment.

The global economy is too interwined with China. No country can afford to put a blanket ban on things that matter, without a viable plan-B.

sanmon3186··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
Can anyone explain the effectiveness of such apps that are being used by some countries. If the apps help, isn’t there an argument of “life vs. privacy”, And if these app don’t, then why isn’t the effectiveness being challenged.

I understand the privacy advocacy but in matters of life and death (that is how a common man perceives covid-19), unless the effectiveness of Coronavirus solutions is dumbed down, this argument will continue. Till then people will see the app download as their contribution to this fight.

sanmon3186··on [dead]
It sounds like a cliche new year resolution but I went cold turkey in 2020. I had been smoking moderately for almost a decade. The first ten days were really hard. 45 days on, I still feel the occasional urge to smoke but it is far better.

My personal experience so far is that it is a mind game. You need to truly tell yourself that there is zero possibility to smoke. Unless your mind accepts that, it is not easy to stop.

sanmon3186··on Honk more, wait more: Mumbai traffic police introduce the ‘punishing signal’
I "partially" disagree. In my view, civic sense has also a lot to do with resources per capita available. Whether it is Black Friday sales in the US or driving on crazy roads in India, people tend to save time and money by resorting to unruly behavior.
sanmon3186··on Nearly a third of Indian startup founders surveyed are considering moving abroad
India is becoming a popular destination for foreigners to chase their startup dreams[1]. Same source.

sanmon3186··on In India What We Are Seeing Is the Symptoms of Fascism: Noam Chomsky
Having spent more than 10 years on r/India, it is saddening to see it in its current form. An outright ban of people with a difference of opinion has taken r/India to a whole new level of bigotry.
sanmon3186··on How did British officers live in the scorching heat of India?
Apparently Britishers had snow pits for refrigeration in Shimla (a northern hill station) that are being revived now for tourism [1].

sanmon3186··on Many Japanese children refuse to go to school
> Bullying, exams, homework, sleep disruption, etc is all cost.

Aren't these fact of adult life too, that children need to learn?

sanmon3186··on India builds detention camps for up to 1.9M people not on citizens register
> The Goalpara camp is one of at least 10 planned detention centres, according to local media reports. It is around the size of seven football pitches and designed to hold 3,000 people.

While I empathize with the people being detained, the headline is really misleading. Above makes it 21 thousands - or of that order.

sanmon3186··on Fashion industry emits more carbon than flights and maritime shipping combined
>Storage units weren't even a thing 75 years ago. Now they're ubiquitous.

Not sure how prevalent it is in other countries especially the first world, but self-storage facilities in the US surprise me (I am an Indian). Given the average house size in USA which is second highest after Australia, I wonder what kind of useful stuff gets stored in these stores.

sanmon3186··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
My hypothesis is that they grew with a notion that "if it is on a newspaper, magazine or a book, it must be true", which was indeed the case when compared to digital content in today's world.

It took me a long discussion to convince my Indian uncle that image of certificate (signed by director general of UNESCO) that he forwarded on WhatsApp, declaring Indian national anthem as the best national anthem in the world, can be created in 10 minutes by anyone these days.

sanmon3186··on The Reason We Haven’t Directly Detected Dark Matter
Slightly off topic, but is there a resource for slightly less scientific minds to understand the universe as seen by those who do. I get an impression reading here and there that are theories to describe start and end of the universe (Or the limitations of human mind to grasp the concept of it), but I give up the moment I see too much of mathematics.
sanmon3186··on How America lost its love for the stick shift
I believe extra cost plays a big role.
sanmon3186··on No “Material Difference Between 5G and LTE”
>I would max out my data cap in 5 minutes..

It is important to note that data is not consumed at the same speed it is downloaded at.

sanmon3186··on Email exchange between MIT Media Lab and the IOTA Foundation [pdf]
>MIT Media Lab wrote a responsible disclosure report

Pardon my ignorance but I am confused with engagement of MIT Media lab in this. Was it volunteer or there was some formal engagement between IOTA foundation and MIT Media lab?

sanmon3186··on 90% of American public schools now hold mass shooting drills for students
If I may suggest, please read 2008 Mumbai attack and see if there are really any parallels. There is a difference when someone from a foreign land acquire weapons outside and attacks you (unless I am missing the point you are trying to make).
sanmon3186··on 90% of American public schools now hold mass shooting drills for students
Mumbai attack was a terrorist attack. My response was in context of mass shooting in schools.
sanmon3186··on 90% of American public schools now hold mass shooting drills for students
India a country of 1.3 billion people, has its own share of law and order issues but never in my life I heard anything like this. Thanks to Britain, we have anti gun legislation from the colonial era, though the reasons were different back then.

My father had a licensed gun. I believe my family got it for crop protection in 60s. I don’t recall it being used anytime but I do remember that he needed to surrender it at local magistrate office, anytime there were state or federal elections. After he passed away, we surrendered it permanently. I guess I had a choice to transfer the license to my name which I never did.
