The talent marketplace is broken.

The demand for designers & developers has never been higher. FAANGs are throwing insane offers at top talent. And all that’s left for many startups is scraps: boot camp grads & budget agencies.

That scarcity is not a new phenomenon. When I left Google in 2015 to start freelancing, I charged $300 an hour for design & development work.

Was I just that good?

The truth is, people paid $300, not because I produced value at that rate, but because I was paying $3K in Brooklyn rent. Not because I was worth $250K+ a year, but because Google was paying me that without blinking an eye.

If you're going to compete, you need to find another way to scale your team than so-called 10X freelancers.

I'm James Knight, cofounder and Chief Nerd at No Nerds No Problem.

sanedigital··on Florida Surgeon General recommends against mRNA vaccines for males aged 18-39
You would need to present evidence that rates of non-vaccination between immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised individuals are not equal for this to be true. Anecdotally, I know a handful of "immunocompromised" individuals (RA and its relatives run rampant in my family), and all of them are vaccinated and boosted.

20% of Florida hasn't received a single dose [1]. Even if you assume that 2.7% of Florida is immunocompromised (using a figure from a Google search [2], maybe not the most accurate), and that 0% of the immunocompromised population is vaccinated (bold assumption), that's still only ~14% of this pool that's immunocompromised.

You can't make an analytic deconstruction of bias and then just stop when you get to a level that makes you comfortable.

sanedigital··on Dark Sky iOS app will no longer work from Dec 31
There's a brand new Weather app in iOS 16. It's (more or less) the same functionality as Dark Sky was.
sanedigital··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
We lived in Spain for 4 years and Portugal for 1. I love the country and the people, but from a management perspective, the place is a disaster. It made Spain feel like some sort of futuristic perfect society managed by hyper-efficient AI by comparison (and that's saying something).
sanedigital··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
We lived in Lisbon for a year. While lots of city centers have had housing converted to Short-term Rentals, Lisbon is at an entirely different level. There, entire apartment buildings (6-10 units) are converted to Airbnbs/hotels/hostels. There are streets in the more touristy areas where every other building is for STRs (buildings that were clearly built as long-term housing).
sanedigital··on Snap lays off 20% of employees
Google is in all of those areas as well, they're just minor plays.

Last quarter, ~10% of Google's revenue came from non-advertising Services and ~7% came from Google Cloud. The ~82% that comes from ads is split between Search, YouTube, and the Network.

Amazon by comparison is 83% dependent on Amazon retail. Cloud fills the remaining 17%. They're not any better diversified, by revenue.

sanedigital··on What alcohol does to your body, brain and health [video]
I use Double Wood for most of my simple supplements (Magnesium Threonate, Apigenin, etc). They (claim to) do a lot of quality testing and have great customer support.
sanedigital··on Coping with Copilot
> If you allow students to use copilot, you're handing out certificates or diplomas to people who can't code.

I've given a couple hundred technical interviews over the last 10 years. This has been the case for a long, long time—even from fancy colleges.

sanedigital··on Microsoft finally admits Xbox One sales were less than half of the PS4
I'm a working father. I get maybe 20-30 minutes a month where I can play games. Previously, I had a PC that never got turned on except for gaming. When I would sit down to play, I would have to wade through ~30 minutes of OS updates, Steam updates, and then game updates. Every. Single. Time.

I got my son a PS5 for Christmas last year. I was able to play and beat Elden Ring over the course of a few months because I could sit down, open the game within ~30 seconds, and then go back to my responsibilities.

PCs are great, but they'll never compete with the effortless convenience of consoles.

sanedigital··on The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN
What things? I submitted it as an answer on Leetcode and it was accepted.
sanedigital··on The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN
It’s not, on Leetcode. I submitted it as an answer and it worked. In the case where the number is repeated more than once (m times), you have an array of n+m elements. Divide the sum by m, subtract, problem solved.
sanedigital··on The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN
Sum the input list, sum the list of [1...n], subtract and voila!
sanedigital··on The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN
Not sure I agree. It's very simple if you look at what's "wrong" with the input: it has a duplicated number, which means there's a "right" version of it without. That right version is just the count from 1->n. Once you see that, you can see that all you have to do is sum each list and calculate the difference.
sanedigital··on How I regained concentration and focus
Stop waiting. This may not be popular with the hive mind, but if you want kids and she doesn’t: move on.

I love my wife more than anything outside my family, but the kids are on another level. In 20 years you may not remember your current partner’s face. But you won’t pass a moment without thinking about your children, if you choose to have them.

sanedigital··on How I regained concentration and focus
Maybe. Maybe not. But no matter what those other people do, they’ll never ever be able to get more youthful, energetic years with their children and (hopefully) grandchildren. All that money and even Elon can’t buy time.

I had kids relatively young for a yuppie male (27) and while that was 100% the “right time” I would have done it earlier if I had known how great they are.

sanedigital··on Ask HN: Remote work credit? I built an app that the company thinks my boss built
Yep. The first organizations were military. You don't jump chain of command unless the integrity of the organization is at risk. Doing it for personal gain—even if justified? Instant persona non grata.
sanedigital··on Ask HN: Remote work credit? I built an app that the company thinks my boss built
Do this at most companies and you'll get sidelined fast. The management caste protects their own. Uppity ICs don't get "the attention they deserve" they get sidelined.
sanedigital··on I regret my website redesign
Other way around, in my experience. We run a team of ~20 at our studio—the "A-team" all want to work on the smaller projects because they're usually more interesting, they have more control, they get to move faster, etc.
sanedigital··on How about a Genius Basic Income?
The entire European welfare state is dependent on the fact that they don't pay to maintain trade routes internationally—the US does that for them. The huge influx of refugees came a decade after Afghanistan and Iraq, due to US, Russian, Turkish (AND EUROPEAN) meddling in MENA.
sanedigital··on How about a Genius Basic Income?
Yes, the entire Western world—and Europe especially—benefits greatly from the largess afforded to them by the Pax Americana.
sanedigital··on One man’s fight to end California’s ban on ferrets
> But regardless, you need to weigh those risks against the enjoyment and psychological benefit that owners derive from pet ferrets, just like with pets of any other species.

This almost sounds like satire. You can't have a ferret. Dad said so. Go play with something else.

sanedigital··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
> This is just another symptom of the disease of the disproportional representation.

Hard disagree. Those issues have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Legislators have learned that the best way to guarantee re-election is to loudly wring your hands and ask "won't somebody do something" every election season. If they actually do their jobs, people might hold them accountable. It has zero to do with "disproportional representation".

> ...the senate refuses to pass laws the majority of Americans want.

This is by design. That's literally what a Senate is designed to do. Preventing the mob from ruling the country by popular decree.

> How can you interpret the Texas law... that make up a minority of Americans.

Because a majority of TEXANS support it: only 28% of the state thinks abortion should be legal in all or most cases [1]. You can't look at nationwide polls and make statements about local politics.

sanedigital··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
> "Where you see delegating to the states, I see a minority (less than 30% of Americans agree with this) enforcing social views on the majority".

That's not true, only 26% of Americans support abortion in almost all cases. Most support some sort of restriction. This ruling forces the States to determine what those restrictions are.

This is an extremely complicated and nuanced cultural issue. The debate that's happening now is one that was cut short by Roe—one that the rest of the West has had. Few other countries allow abortion with "no restrictions". States should be allowed to decide, individually, where they want to draw the line.

I'll add that this is in no way an endorsement of an anti-choice position. But there's no way to view this as "a minority enforcing social views on the majority."

The primary civic problem in this country is the neutering of our State and Federal legislatures. The Courts should not be legislating. The Executive should not be legislating. Force our Representatives to do their damn jobs.

Swift and Kotlin both do a fantastic job here. You think in types but don’t have to spend much time typing them.

sanedigital··on Aerosol particle emission increases exponentially above moderate exercise
Resistance training and cardio are both necessary for a long healthy life. Neither alone is sufficient.

Regardless, I hear what you’re saying, but that didn’t sound like what GP meant when they said they missed their gym life.

sanedigital··on Aerosol particle emission increases exponentially above moderate exercise
My comment wasn’t very clear, sorry. I actually meant the opposite: that by limiting socializing they’re harming their health.
sanedigital··on Aerosol particle emission increases exponentially above moderate exercise
You're probably reducing your life expectancy much more by skipping the gym (or publicly socializing, but that's a whole other discussion) than you would be from those 3-4 illnesses a year.

There are extremists on the other side that believe puberty blockers are safe and reversible. The scientific consensus disagrees.

This is my exact point.
