The demand for designers & developers has never been higher. FAANGs are throwing insane offers at top talent. And all that’s left for many startups is scraps: boot camp grads & budget agencies.
That scarcity is not a new phenomenon. When I left Google in 2015 to start freelancing, I charged $300 an hour for design & development work.
Was I just that good?
The truth is, people paid $300, not because I produced value at that rate, but because I was paying $3K in Brooklyn rent. Not because I was worth $250K+ a year, but because Google was paying me that without blinking an eye.
If you're going to compete, you need to find another way to scale your team than so-called 10X freelancers.

Jumping to conclusions and pushing narratives isn't the exclusive purview of any particular group, especially not in 2023.
Are you looking for designers and developers that build exactly what you ask for?
Keep looking. That’s not us. Otherwise, keep reading.
In 2023, tech is a commodity.
Around the world, there are millions of professionals that can build functional software.
Thousands and thousands of freelancers, agencies, and studios that won’t totally f*ck things up.
These days, building an app right is easy. But building the right app?
That’s hard.
In 2023, you’re competing against companies with market caps in the TRILLIONS.
You can’t beat them at their own game. You have to invent your own.
Be the David to their Goliath.
If you want a company that builds software, keep looking.
But if you want a company that sells slings?

We'll take Goliath down together.
Poor Aragon, always getting its history rewritten by Catalan separatists and those that sympathize with them.
Scrum isn't perfect, but its an "industry-standard" practice that we can use to get quick buy-in from client stakeholders, and then use to apply even the most basic level of process to these teams.
As an engineer at Google or a freelance developer it never made much sense to me.
But as a manager of remote, distributed, international teams?
It makes a lot of sense.
Children takes a sharp turn with the whole possession thing and then Leto's metamorphosis. But Messiah is quite adaptable and is the real ending for many of the same characters as Book 1.
It’s not for everyone, but if you’re struggling to find meaning in your own life, perhaps looking up is the answer?
At no point was anyone—myself, my child, or another party—in any danger. Perhaps that would be different for someone who had never used Autopilot and didn't know how to disengage. But after a year driving that car, I'm comfortable in my assertion that the situation was safe.
But, by all means, please continue with the HN pedantry. We wouldn't want this place to change.
I was expecting FSD to be bad, but I sure wasn't expecting it to be that bad.
Maybe without disengaging any of the three incidents could have become problems, but for someone who knows how Autopilot works it was more comical than dangerous.
The car almost caused an accident 3 separate times.
The first, was when it almost drove into oncoming traffic at an intersection where the road curves north on both sides.
The second, was when it failed to understand a fork on the right side of the road, swerved back and forth twice, and then almost drove straight into a road sign.
The third, in downtown, was when a brick crosswalk confused it on a left turn, causing it to literally drive up onto the corner of the intersection. Thank God there weren't pedestrians there.
When we upgraded to a Y, I turned down FSD. I don't imagine I'll be paying for it ever again.
Some people treat "the immune system" like a muscle, where stress strengthens. Similar stressors can have cross-reactive effects, but unrelated ones do not.
This can go the other way too: people who have uncontrolled celiac disease (as in, they're still consuming gluten on a regular basis) can also have issues with avenin (a somewhat similar protein in oats) or even lactose. For a lot of folks those sensitivities disappear when they get their gluten consumption down.
That's not to say the "hygiene hypothesis" is completely false. There's good evidence that exposing children to low level pathogens early and often helps reduce autoimmune conditions like allergies, asthma, and arthritis. It just doesn't effect viral response.
The talent marketplace is broken.
