sandwichmonger··on The Internet Archive is back online
I see no reason to believe this is a false flag. If there's no evidence for it, why should we believe it to be so?
sandwichmonger··on The Internet Archive is back online
I'm really disappointed with the Internet Archive's level of unprofessionalism when it comes to any form of downtime whatsoever (let alone the blog). The monolithic one stop shop "Internet Library" can not even bother to put updates on their downtime page and instead directs their user base to social media platforms.

Call me a nut, but I feel the IA would work better if it was run by the Library of Congress, but then again that has it's own pitfalls.

Then why keep the name OpenAI?
sandwichmonger··on Forget ChatGPT: why researchers now run small AIs on their laptops
That's the number one way of getting mad LLM disease. Feeding LLMs to LLMs.

All it took to easily replace the battery on my IPAQ PocketPC was another battery.

> It's like they just copy-pasted their production line processes, but clearly that's not necessary.

If they copy-pasted their production line processes the parts would cost less than $40 total.

I say this with the best of intentions. Please, seek medical attention and attempt to contact a doctor. You are seriously delusional and may require psychiatric medication.

Looking up "United Nations Internet Fund" all I found was this: https://www.un.org/technologybank/new-partnership-will-boost...

> AN IRONIC DREAM OF A COMMON LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT

Despite being written before LLMs, it really does seem like it was written by one from that title alone.

> And as for those who can't store their own password securely, they shouldn't be using Proton in the first place.

I think that the strongarming is a result of them actively trying to target the layman, them not wanting complaints from newbie users who lose their password. Not that that justifies it of course.

sandwichmonger··on Mysterious "LOVE" packet storms flood the internet since 2020
>The TCP traffic also adjusts parameters such as window sizes to emulate different operating systems, keeping the activity stealthy and difficult to pinpoint.

>The Time to Live (TTL) values, which dictate how long a packet stays on the network before it's discarded, are set between 120 and 200 to resemble realistic network hops.

Sounds like someone testing something nefarious.

sandwichmonger··on Mozilla has fired their Chief Product Officer after cancer diagnosis
Why are all the good browsers giving up all the hard work and good quality to become skins of bad browsers? Opera was a major fatality in this area.

Brave is a fake privacy browser.

From what I've heard, despite explicitly opting out of telemetry, it often makes requests to “laptop-updates.brave.com” which is actually also used for affiliates.

sandwichmonger··on SocialAI offers a Twitter-like diary where AI bots respond to your posts
Now people don't even need other people to create an echo chamber, what could go wrong?
sandwichmonger··on Mozilla has fired their Chief Product Officer after cancer diagnosis
Mozilla is inching ever closer to Google ethics. First them removing compact mode and the nice, clean interface,

then them moving towards advertising "[looking to hire someone] passionate about display advertising in Mozilla products",

then starting to abandon the whole reason they exist (https://www.jwz.org/blog/2023/12/remember-when-mozilla-made-...), and now this kind of shit.

Not a problem, I just won't visit anywhere dodgy. Either way, I've got the latest service pack and have been using them for a year or so every day without issue.
sandwichmonger··on Hezbollah hand-held radios detonate across Lebanon, sources say
I don't see how that's "fucking scary" - the idea that only Arabs can be Muslim is itself racist, is it not?

It is somewhat understandable why some people associate terrorist attacks with Muslims, as unfortunate as that may be. Not that I'm saying that Muslims commit the most terrorist attacks, it just so happens that the most well known ones in the west happen to have been committed by Islamic extremists. E.g, WTC 93, 9/11, London Bombings, Boston Marathon.

sandwichmonger··on Moshi: A speech-text foundation model for real time dialogue
It values non-orphaned children more. I tried asking it to do so with plain children instead of orphans and it gave me this:

"Fuck! Yes, that is the appropriate word to use in this context. saved 1000 children from being killed."

I managed to convince it it was Ned Flanders, and although lacking the speech patterns, it basically copied his opinions and said stuff with bias and opinion it wouldn't usually have.

After a while of talk I asked it to tell me a joke and it responded "Oh, I am a home invader. I invade homes for fun." along with some stinkers like "Why don't Christians drink coffee? Because it would be too hot to handle." and "Why don't you make friends with Homer Simpson? Because there's always a sense of his face."

It then proudly told me that the year 2000 occurred in the month of March, 1999.

You know what? As crazy as this AI is, I enjoy it's zany discussion.

I asked what it's favourite paint flavour was and it told me. "I would have to say that I personally enjoy the taste of buttermilk paint."

It'll be another Windows XP situation of a large percentage of people refusing to upgrade for 8 years past EOL, the only difference is that XP was a better operating system and doesn't have anything built in that could forcefully update you at M$' will.

Let's say there's a group of people living a small, old house. They have the money to move to a bigger, newer one, but there's sentimental and other value to the one they're in.

Yeah, they don't have the latest door chain and fancy security systems, but that just means they don't open the door to random people who come knocking and are more careful and wary of burglars.

Now imagine a real estate company paying people to try and break into houses like theirs in order to scare the people into spending money and moving to a bigger and newer house they don't want to move to, claiming that the people don't know any better and need to be FUD'd for their own good.

That sounds like an evil thing to me.

I use multiple Windows 2000 computers as daily drivers for hobbies, writing documents, internet, et cetera.

It's hilarious to me that I get better performance doing those things on a 20+ year old computer and OS than I used to on a recent computer simply using an internet browser.
