sandipc··on How to Beat High Airfares
"they need to check if your bags are flying unaccompanied"

For those traveling with checked luggage, this "hop off" tactic won't work, unless passengers want to lose their bags.

For those without checked luggage, the airlines have no way of determining whether your carry-on bags are still on the plane or not, short of emptying the plane and reboarding (which I have never seen before).

sandipc··on Osama bin Laden Is Dead
that's because it is breaking news. We are still waiting for President Obama's official statement address to begin...
sandipc··on RIP, RIM: The death spiral is underway
The "source" you linked to only contributes to a small portion of this article. The RIM press release doesn't make any mention of how RIM's competitors are doing.
sandipc··on What will Google offer?
Yeah, this would seem to work really well with the recent Latitude auto-checkin support on Android
sandipc··on Android vs. iOS Growth
>> No matter what, Unlike Google, Apple is making lots of money from its ios devices.

Google is also making lots of money from the sale (and use) of iOS devices. People still search on iPhones, and people who search generally use the default search engine (Google on mobile Safari).

sandipc··on Why I miss IE6
in summary,

"I kinda miss the days when IE6 was The Browser For Them All."

"I have a freaking ton of customers running older browsers"

sandipc··on Georgify: Hacker News meets beautiful typography
I think the reference is to the HN submission title ("typogrpahy")
sandipc··on Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player
how long until Dropbox makes a full-featured Cloud Player of their own?
sandipc··on AT&T to Acquire T-Mobile USA for $39 Billion
These days, cell phone plans in the US are generally national plans with no domestic roaming charges between states or regions. International roaming still hurts though.
sandipc··on Thunderbolt
1) true 2) true, but keep in mind that this bandwidth is shared by the entire bus.
sandipc··on New MacBook Pro series
when the 11" Macbook Air gets Thunderbolt and a newer generation of processors, I will be first in line to pick one up.

Compact size, internal SSD, and only two cords to plug in each time I sit down - power and data - and data happens to also carry video to a large external monitor setup.

sandipc··on Apple releases dev preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion with AirDrop, FileVault
the video on that page of the new multitouch gesture support looks really useful
sandipc··on New MacBook Pro series
Also consider that the new i5 in the 13" will be much better than the old Core2Duo.
sandipc··on Thunderbolt
So I guess the official branding of Lightpeak is Thunderbolt, even from Intel? And the standard connector (even outside of Apple products) is essentially Mini-Displayport?
sandipc··on New MacBook Pro series
I was really hoping the stock models would ditch hard drives entirely (for SSDs) like the MB Air.
sandipc··on Motorola Xoom price official: $799 unsubsidized on Verizon, $600 for WiFi-only
when the Apple tablet was announced, the chosen name for the device was subject to ridicule for weeks on the internet. After it became one of the fastest selling tech products ever, the internet whiners were nowhere to be found...
sandipc··on Man places his genome in public domain, on Github
Technically this isn't his entire genome - just SNPs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-nucleotide_polymorphism)

One major problem with developing a "Google for the human genome" is that we don't actually understand how most of the genes (coding) and noncoding regions in our DNA actually work or interact with each other... except at a very basic level for a very limited set of genes.

There are genome browsers out there already that came out of the human genome project and work in that direction. One example: http://huref.jcvi.org/

sandipc··on Android Market Web Store just Launched
this isn't a great reason, but perhaps this is because users of the Chrome Web Store are guaranteed to be using a modern web browser (Chrome), while regular computer users of the Android Market can be using any browser. (Does the new Market work in IE?)
sandipc··on A Disturbing Trend in Online Education: News Feeds
I don't think this statement is actually true: "Ever since Facebook pioneered the concept of the News Feed, a constantly updating stream of communications to keep you in the loop..."

(Twitter, and possibly even RSS feeds before that)

sandipc··on Eric Schmidt: On April 4th I Will Step Down, Larry Page to be CEO
there is more to Chrome than WebKit
sandipc··on Ask HN: Why is -2^2 = -4 instead of 4?
interesting, I've never heard of BODMAS... just PEMDAS.

Same thing, different acronym. (parentheses, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract)

sandipc··on Android Isn’t About Building a Mobile Platform
As far as I know, Bing is the default on the Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy S) on Verizon, but not any other Verizon Android phones. And certainly not on the "Droid" series (which is distinct from Verizon's other Android offerings)...
sandipc··on Tim Bray: Year-end View of the Mobile Market
unfortunately, AFAIK, T-Mobile is the only major US carrier to offer such no-contract/unsubsidized discounts
sandipc··on Woman with Immortal Cells
more on the story of Henrietta Lacks: http://www.jhu.edu/jhumag/0400web/01.html

and the ethics of taking her cells without her consent: http://magazine.jhu.edu/2010/06/immortal-cells-enduring-issu...

sandipc··on RIM thought iPhone was impossible in 2007
Or the Creative Nomad Jukebox...
sandipc··on If you're visiting family over the holiday, turn off Internet Explorer.
in my experience, they will marvel at the speed for a little while... until a favorite website doesn't display correctly for whatever reason. Then it becomes my job to play tech support.
sandipc··on Google aquires duck.com and points at own search site
What do you mean?
sandipc··on Fred Wilson's Nexus S Review
I think most people attribute the jerkiness to the lack of GPU/hardware acceleration in the Android UI. Really hope that's implemented in 3.0
sandipc··on Under the hood of Google Maps 5.0 for Android
There are rumors that Honeycomb won't need any physical buttons at all...

(the prototype tablet Andy Rubin demoed the other day had on-screen buttons that would rotated with the screen)
