sandaru1··on GitHub Renamed Me (2014)
How would this affect you if you are using Github as a OAuth provider? Does Github mention under what conditions they are going to take away someone's username? No code? No OAuth? No activity?
sandaru1··on FCC Authorizes SpaceX to Provide Broadband Satellite Services
It has gotten considerably faster in last few years. I'm using SLT 4G with an average speed of 30Mbps.
sandaru1··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
But the religious groups are a protected class. Religion is something you choose. By that logic, it would be possible to discriminate against "Christians", "Muslims", etc.
sandaru1··on India Is Winning Its War on Human Waste
It's $25 because it's buy one - give one free. http://www.luckyironfish.com/facts (At the bottom).
sandaru1··on Reasons not to use Uber
One of the reasons I'm using Uber is that it's quite safe. Otherwise, most of the times you try to get into a cab, they try to rip you off. There are rigged meters, long routes, switching bills when you are paying, etc.
sandaru1··on Ask HN: What did your 'Show HN' project turn into?
I posted about our small medical app about 6 years ago. So far we've been,

1. Started a company around the medical apps (http://www.medicaljoyworks.com)

2. Managed to create a revenue stream and released more than 12 apps in the medical education field (Some completely new apps and some sub specialty apps of the original app idea)

3. Employed several full time people through out the years - in four different countries.

4. Our apps have been downloaded more than ~4 million times and been in the top ten medical apps around the world continuously.

5. Have been featured in many prominent blogs and medical college study guides (Also few research papers on medical education using gamification and pilot programs from universities)

6. Released more than 600 case studies in English and Spanish. (We are on the process of translating everything into French, Italian and Portuguese).

7. Doing quite good on revenue/profit and about ~200 content creators are working for us on contract basis right now.

sandaru1··on A professor built a chatbot to be his teaching assistant
Anyone know whether they used watson APIs to create this bot or used the original watson codebase (with IBM collaboration)?
sandaru1··on Linode DDoS continues – Atlanta down for 16+ hours
It could be a competitor of someone who is using linode for their hosting. Rather than attacking a single server which would be easier to track down, it's probably easier to attack the whole network.
sandaru1··on Instagram's Million Dollar Bug
In any case, there is one question remains. How do facebook defines a "million dollar" bug if the security team is not aware of the damage it can do. Since this is not the first time this bug was reported, did they actually give a big bounty to the first person who did the initial report(Given that it can lead to this much damage)? Or just another small bounty saying that it's not a very important security flaw.
sandaru1··on El Capitan and Homebrew
Just make sure that if there are any launch daemons plist files, those should be root:wheel. Otherwise "launchctl" won't load those daemons.
sandaru1··on Legion of Tech Volunteers Lead a Charge for Bernie Sanders
During the Presidential Election of Sri Lanka (2015, January), there was a huge Volunteer supporter base on social media for Maithreepala Sirisena (The candidate who won the election defeating the previous president). This was mainly due to the fact there was no media freedom and the traditional media was hugely biased towards one side.

It was quite interesting since the official tech teams of the candidates are there as nominal roles. They were just using online advertising and maintaining FB pages, etc - nothing more.

This blog explains in more detail : http://groundviews.org/2015/01/13/was-prespollsl-2015-sri-la...

sandaru1··on The xkcd survey
Correlated.org is quite brilliant. Is there a way to see the most popular posts?
sandaru1··on Show HN: A DOM text-selection highlight renderer
Is there a good library that does the same inside a textarea?
sandaru1··on List of April Fools' Day Announcements
Checkout our newest product - an online medical reference. The main feature would be our new creative UI that would let users navigate the site easily and comfortably with a nostalgic feeling. http://www.explainmedicine.com/
sandaru1··on Ten years of Ubuntu
One of the main reasons Ubuntu got popular (compared to other distros) on Sri Lanka because they shipped free CDs. Lots of people in Sri Lanka didn't have Cable or DSL internet connections by that time. It was limited to a smaller area of the country - even when people had it, it was 512kbps.

No one was going to bother download a huge distro DVD to try out a new OS. However, when you get a CD, you tend to try it out. The smooth installation process certainly helped a lot.

sandaru1··on Failed many times before raising $13M on Kickstarter
I funded MicroView on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1516846343/microview-ch...). I think they also ran into problems with manufacturing a large quantity of devices. However, I got the device in a reasonable time frame and I'm very happy with the quality of the product. I'm not sure whether they are the rule or the exception.

In the end, it's unfair to assume that this project will fail to deliver shipments based on unrelated failed crowdfunded projects.

sandaru1··on A month at Y Combinator: What it’s like after you’ve been accepted
What's the typical visa type of foreign entrepreneurs who gets accepted into YC? The startup visa is not ready yet, right?
sandaru1··on Popcorn Time Devs Drop Like Flies But No One Will Talk
Did you try followshows.com
sandaru1··on App-pocalypse Now
One of the main reasons companies want people to download their free app is that it's a great marketing channel. Once enough people download the app, it goes up in the App Store rankings. When you are up in the rankings, you get free marketing for your product. Thousands/millions of users are seeing the app and by extension the product.
sandaru1··on Path texts my entire phonebook at 6 AM
Android doesn't ask for user's permission before accessing the address book, is it?
sandaru1··on GoDaddy SSL Cert Scam
Any recommendations on where to buy a good ssl certificate?
sandaru1··on It’s “GitHub meets Shopify”: Binpress sells your source code
Is this only for web development libraries? I think there will be a huge market for iPhone/Android libraries.
sandaru1··on Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 source code leaked
Technically, in this case when you are downloading from the torrent, you are also uploading which can be taken as distributing.
sandaru1··on Maptail.js geoips your tail -f to a map
maptail.js line 43 add following line :

  , partials: __dirname + '/views'
sandaru1··on Maptail.js geoips your tail -f to a map
Tried on v0.3.5 - works fine after I added a "partials" parameter to boil config on maptail.js line 39.

Otherwise boil.js fails to normalize the path because it's passing an undefined value and path.normalize tries to access "charAt" function of the string.

sandaru1··on Startup Ideas Every Nerd Has (That Never Work)
Yes, posted on HN about 5 days ago. Our main user group is doctors and medical students (or any healthcare professionals who are familiar with little bit of medicine).

Take a look at iMedicalApps review for detailed analysis (good and bad) : http://www.imedicalapps.com/2010/11/prognosis-your-diagnosis...

>> You want to apply gaming mechanics to exercise? Good! Do it and tell me about it! That sounds awesome! Make an iPhone app for it, make a facebook app for it, let me pick random strangers across the internet to challenge at it. Make leaderboards and lots of badgers, and blog about it. If you fail, write more blog posts about why you failed.

We just did that for Medical field - "Prognosis", currently at 5th position on iPhone medical apps (after 15 days).

This makes me think, we need a new rel value "negative".
sandaru1··on What would a newspaper look like if it were invented today?
I'm not particularly sold on the news+ concept, but Smoking Apples blog looks pretty sharp and nicely written. Adding to the RSS reader.
