samweinberg··on I'm creating a website to promote early stage sites and ideas
Even though I'm already subscribed to betali.st and erlibird, I just can't seem to get enough of sites like this. Bookmarked.
samweinberg··on Wild Ideas
That's interesting to ponder on and all, but we know the Sims characters are not aware.
samweinberg··on OMGPOP Team Tried To Buy Back Its Site, But Zynga Killed It Instead
When a company acquires another and then shuts it down, the reasoning usually has something to do with intellectual properties or acqui-hiring the employees.
samweinberg··on OpenBR – An open face recognition/biometry library
Yep, that's called depressive realism. It's pretty bizarre to think about.
samweinberg··on Show HN: I wrote Getting Started with ownCloud
I can't say that I would buy this book, but I have been wanting to get started with OwnCloud. Best of luck with your sales.
samweinberg··on Feedly Pro
Seriously. You shouldn't have to pay to expect a reasonable amount of security as a user.
samweinberg··on [dead]
>back in germany, a few days after christmas, 4 month after the ibiza trip, i turned on my computer and noticed fifteen new pictures inside my dropbox camera upload folder.

I think you're right. 4 months is more than enough time for a smartphone to be bought and used by a new person.

samweinberg··on Obama Promises Disappear from Web
Don't forget this one:

* New Capabilities to Aggressively Defeat Terrorists: Improve the American intelligence apparatus by investing in its capacity to collect and analyze information, share information with other agencies and carry out operations to disrupt terrorist networks.

samweinberg··on Practical Typography
Hmm. The font used on this website, Equity Text B, was created by the author.

samweinberg··on Practical Typography
Agreed. His bio[1] suggests that he knows what he's talking about, but without any in-depth explanations the reader just has to take his word for it. Doing something without knowing why you are doing it, based on what you read in book called Practical Typography, is not very practical.

samweinberg··on Ask HN: How do you manage your photos?
That's a good question.

I haven't personally run into that problem, although I'm not sure if that's just because I don't have any duplicates or if Everpix just fixes it automatically.

samweinberg··on Leap Motion Has Launched
Don't forget WiSee!
samweinberg··on Ask HN: How do you manage your photos?
I use Everpix, which pulls in and organizes photos from Dropbox, my Camera, iCloud Photo Stream, iPhoto Library, and any other specified location (such as an email attachment folder) on my computer. It's pretty handy.
samweinberg··on Ask HN: I'm quadriplegic – can you help me with my security?
I remember reading in MAKE about a gumball machine that only dispenses gumballs when a secret knock is performed. I'm sure something like that can be adapted for this purpose.

samweinberg··on Ask HN: What SaaS products do you pay for personally?
Amazon Prime, Sirius XM, Private Internet Access, and Carbonite.
samweinberg··on Probably not for hackers
Lobste.rs is pretty much what you're describing here.
samweinberg··on Best Laptops for Web Designers
>There are certain features which Web Designers will be looking for, including: Value for money, speed, Good screen size/resolution, battery life and portability.

I think it's safe to say that everyone in the market for a new laptop will be looking for these qualities.

The article doesn't even explain why these choices would be a good fit for a web designer. It's as if the author just made a list of general-purpose laptops and picked a random profession out of a hat to use for the title.

samweinberg··on The Fall jams your gun on jailbroken iOS devices
There are quite a few different ways a Jailbroken device can be detected.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/413242/how-do-i-detect-th...

samweinberg··on The Fall jams your gun on jailbroken iOS devices
Legally purchase a $7 app and get screwed by the DRM.

Pirate a $7 app and subvert the DRM using a Jailbreak tweak like xCon.

It seems that this only hurts the legitimate users, as others will still be able to pirate the app.

samweinberg··on Don't be evil: Moving everything off of Google
>There’s no free membership, but I consider that a good thing.

You can sign up for a free App.net account with an invite. I have a few, anyone interested?

samweinberg··on IFTTT goes Mobile
I was really hoping that iOS app URL schemes could be used as actions.

An example that comes to mind is "If a new article is added to my Pocket, then open the Pocket app on my iPhone (pocket://)."

This could also be a handy way to launch apps on your device remotely (assuming the device has the IFTTT app open).

samweinberg··on Show HN: I hacked my microwave with a Raspberry Pi
I saw the post that inspired this project on /r/CrazyIdeas too. Very cool to see how you've implemented the idea! If I ever get my hands on a Raspberry Pi, I'm going to have to try this.
samweinberg··on The book that inspired the birth of reddit
What career path did you have your sights on before wanting to become an entrepreneur?
samweinberg··on Show HN: Morning, a minimal dashboard app for iPad
You run Cocoa Controls? Thanks for creating such a great resource!
samweinberg··on Why I Just Closed My LinkedIn Account
It's a shame that a company with an already bad track record in user security would do something so careless yet again.
samweinberg··on Why I Just Closed My LinkedIn Account
Can anyone confirm LinkedIn actually sent this email? I mean, straight out asking for your customers' email password is pretty ridiculous.
samweinberg··on A London pub now accepts payment in Bitcoin
Not only will accepting Bitcoin help this pub save some money on fees, it is very likely attract some new customers who happen to be Bitcoin enthusiasts. Win-win!
samweinberg··on A London pub now accepts payment in Bitcoin
Exactly, paying with a credit card is more anonymous than paying with Bitcoin. With the former, only the CC company, the merchant, and presumably the government can see what you purchased. With Bitcoin, anyone with a blockchain explorer can see your when and how much you transacted.
samweinberg··on T-Shirt Printing API
Just sent you an email. Thanks Raymond.
