samtheDamned··on Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta
Apple isn't in the business of spending excess money to avoid breaking things. If anything apple is the opposite.
samtheDamned··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
> How do you deal with Microsoft's crap on a daily basis?

I don't

samtheDamned··on AI could end foreign-language subtitles
> I still prefer watching everything with subtitles. Actors mumble a lot.

Yep I have no problems hearing but newer movies and shows have uneven mixing where it can get really hard to hear over the background noise and subtitles come in clutch constantly for that

samtheDamned··on Is Open Source Free If We Aren’t Allowed to Break It?
> He just orchestrated events to temporarily inconvenience those who thoughtlessly parasitized his work without a second thought

I understand his frustration but he explicitly gave everyone permission to do exactly that in the first place with the license.

samtheDamned··on Humble subscription service is dumping Mac, Linux access in 18 days
On top of that, if it's really trying to get into the same market as Xbox Game Pass, and the Epic giveaways, wouldn't it make more sense to aim at supporting platforms that the xbox game pass/Prime Gaming/EGS giveaways aren't supporting?

They're choosing to dump the 2 other major platforms that they would have next to 0 competition in, and focusing on the one major platform where they not only are competing on level ground with the likes of the EGS and Prime Gaming, they're going up against the biggest "games library as a service" offerings in the industry but , that also just happens to be the OS manufacturer as well, Xbox Game Pass. The service that's becoming pre-installed with newer windows builds, that's integrated tightly into the Microsoft ecosystem, and has a better library of both AAA and indie titles than humble bundle ever will.

samtheDamned··on Darling – Run Mac apps on Linux
> So? Darling is 9 years into its[1] development and hasn't really reached the maturity that Wine had after 7 years of development.

In 1993 wine had a much smaller target though, windows was in its infancy. Darling started in 2012, over a decade after mac-OSX, which even at that point was an established OS brand.

samtheDamned··on Windows 2000 Modernization Guide
I don't think I'd even pay to remove the ads because any OS asking over a hundred dollars per license shouldn't have ads built in in the first place.
samtheDamned··on OBS and Streamlabs Commit to Long-Term Collaboration
The Glimpse project started out as a less offensive fork but was planned to evolve into a rewrite project bringing GIMP level photo-editing to GTK3 but the devs got hit hard by the pandemic and it got put on hold indefinitely.
samtheDamned··on ReactOS 0.4.14
> Windows have been teaching users to install from third parties since 90's

in this instance ReactOS is more secure than windows from the era it's replicating thanks to it's software center

samtheDamned··on The Better.com CEO says he’s ‘deeply sorry’ for firing workers over Zoom
> “You guys know that at least 250 of the people terminated were working an average of 2 hours a day while clocking in 8 hours+ a day in the payroll system?” he wrote.

When you're paying someone to come into an office for 8 hours a day, you're paying for 8 hours of availability for work. Most of the time office workers don't have 8 hours worth of work, sometimes you have 2, sometimes you have 6, and sometimes you do have 8 hours worth of work.

In a typical office setting, in the time a worker doesn't actively have work they just pretend to be busy or sit around. In a work-from-home setting a worker can take that time to grab a snack, watch a video, spend time with their family, or any other number of smaller things.

While the freedom probably has been abused by people, this expectation of a solid 8 hour work day is being shattered and is showing how much more time and freedom workers can have compared to what we have right now and these CEOs are trying to turn it into a way to justify paying workers less or punishing them making use of that freedom.

samtheDamned··on Epic launches anti-cheat support for Linux, Mac, and Steam Deck
I could see it becoming big with pc gamers for how much you can tweak the OS itself to eek out as much performance as you can get. They also tend to want to personalize their PCs a lot and with linux they'd have a whole new level to that with the customizability of the desktop experience itself.
samtheDamned··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
> i always see people complain about AMD's linux support

I've always heard the opposite, that AMD's linux support is amazing and that it's windows drivers are lacking. Especially in the GPU department where it struggles with minecraft.

samtheDamned··on uBlock Origin review
On chrome (and chromium based browsers afaik), the browser loads the web pages first and then loads extensions compared to firefox which loads extensions first and then the web pages.
samtheDamned··on Windows 11 available on October 5
Yeah virtual keyboards are something I just try to avoid having to use for the most part, Gnome's keyboard gets the job done when I absolutely have to type but if I have to write anything important I'll just switch back to laptop form. Which I guess is the big advantage of 2 in 1 laptops over a full on tablet or laptop
samtheDamned··on Windows 11 available on October 5
Windows 10 will still be supported until around 2025 but after that you're SOL
samtheDamned··on Windows 11 available on October 5
I recently got a 2 in 1 laptop and gnome has been much better than any other desktop I've used so far. Beyond the touch friendly UI for touch itself, it's also been good for touchpad use and its touchpad gestures are very fluid. I still use KDE on desktop but for any laptop I'd recommend GNOME for sure.
samtheDamned··on NetBSD/Evbarm on Apple Silicon
Yeah linux on M1 has been challenging to get running, and installing it has been a tricky process, but it might get better soon since basic M1 support has been added to the linux kernel
samtheDamned··on Mozilla Common Voice Adds 16 New Languages and 4,600 New Hours of Speech
They weren't exclusively talking about Esperanto. I read it as a reference to Kinyarwanda and Catalan more than anything else. In the bigger scheme of things there are a lot of languages here that are definitely a product of being able to share your own language. There's multiple native languages that are being shared here, like the thread above about Guarani.
samtheDamned··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
It depends on if you're talking about single player or multiplayer. Notably EAC and battleye are both only really used on multiplayer based games. Cheating on those games isn't "exercising your rights" because you aren't entitled to ruining others experience. Multiplayer is more than a simple "buy and own everything inside" experience because you are buying the ability to use their servers according to their rules and TOS. I support requiring the ability to run your own server without anticheat and full ownership and ability on those but you don't have the right to abuse multiplayer services just because you bought a license to play it.
samtheDamned··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
Its about choice. You aren't required to run EAC or battleye but you can choose to if you want to play video games with your friends. Also anticheat on linux is easier to work with than anticheat on windows. Running a linux gaming VM / dualboot is going to be much easier than a windows gaming vm / dual boot.
samtheDamned··on Valve Steam Deck
and this is only rendering in 720p so it can draw out that power even further without much of a downside due to the smaller screen
samtheDamned··on Valve Steam Deck
It's been confirmed that all 3 editions use m.2 for internal storage
samtheDamned··on Valve Steam Deck
My completely uninformed opinion would be after the deck is launched and all it's kinks ironed out they'll probably work on an index 2
samtheDamned··on Valve Steam Deck
Also I'm pretty sure steam has a clause in its TOS that will open the DRM on all your steam games if steam shuts down
samtheDamned··on Valve Steam Deck
Which I've always thought was weird since I'd expect a store with their stance on DRM would be one of the first in line to at least have a linux client.

I'd actually love to hear what you think about rhapsody, a quick google search doesn't tell me too much about it
