samtheDamned··on Firefox's chief on why he hopes a redesign will help win users from Chrome
What does chrome do with bookmark that firefox doesn't? I've felt like firefox's bookmark manager is relatively powerful with folders, tags, and visual separators (though it feels a bit dated at this point, I think I prefer dated and fast vs modern and slow).
samtheDamned··on The new Firefox design is here
I use linux/Gnome and it feels more in-line with the Adwaita design than the previous design. I'm happy with the update as well.
samtheDamned··on The new Firefox design is here
I agree this is the first FF redesign I really like. I don't use vanilla firefox tabs so I understand that I'm not in the best place to critique them but if anything they seem more compact than the previous default.
samtheDamned··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Spicy cinnamon sticks fit the oral stim bill for this very nicely I've found.

interesting choice

samtheDamned··on BYD looking to build 5-minute EV charging network in Canada
For context, BYD is only just entering the Canadian market[1], it looks like they're looking to really make their mark. Also the article mentions "the low six-per-cent tariff is capped at just 49,000, split between not only Chinese brands but Tesla, Volvo, and Polestar" and suggests that BYD may plan to build some of their cars in Canada.

I don't understand NAFTA very well but might that open the door to BYD cars being able to be sold in the US as well? if they aren't blanket banned that is.

samtheDamned··on Introducing GNOME 51, "A Coruña"
I was just wishing the photos app (apparently named Loupe) would show more info from the image metadata regarding the camera I used to take it. Wonderful timing on GNOME's part here.
samtheDamned··on Audacity 4.0
They do appear to have a light mode, along with general UI customizability according to the homepage [1].

samtheDamned··on Creepy Crawlies
Out of curiosity I tried to load this on my iPhone 12 and it took about 8 and a half minutes and once it finally passed it said my browser didn't allow cookies and to enable them before trying again. I would have to go through the whole proof again. I get what they're doing but there definitely needs to be some work done on getting those times down on iphones.
samtheDamned··on ReactOS 0.4.16
They mentioned their work on upgrading their fork of Wine from being based on Wine 2.x/3.x to Wine 10.0. I didn't realize just how old their wine components were, it doesn't seem like the upgrade fully made this release but I'm excited to see what doors that'll open when it's completed. Getting a Haiku release and a ReactOS release in such a short window is such a treat.
samtheDamned··on Haiku R1/Beta6 Released
This is super exciting! This is one of my favorite niche OSes to watch grow.
samtheDamned··on The new Framework 12 [video]
Same here. I'm definitely getting the fingerprint sensor this time. Additionally whenever an improved display is released I'm itching to get that as well. These are such exciting devices to own.
samtheDamned··on Where Human Sleep Went Wrong
My understanding is that REM isn't particularly deep. Quick web searches aren't actually defining it as more like light or deep sleep, but many of our systems are more active than other stages[1][2]. Still I don't think it's super surprising that we spend more time in REM since our brains are uniquely complex and we spend a lot of energy on perception and interpretation, which REM seems to help with [1][3]. And I would be willing to be safety and comfort also play a decent role in it as well!

samtheDamned··on The Ploopy A+ Trackball Is Here
It stuck out to me because it's I recognized it as a word used in Diary of a Wimpy kid of all things. After a quick search though that seems like a coincidence.
samtheDamned··on Font looks perfectly normal to humans but wreaks havoc on AI
> The substitute words also show up in translation tools and screen readers, and when users copy and paste.

It affects them too

samtheDamned··on TIME Is Serving AI Bots a Different Website, with Ads Built In
iirc I can use Firefox's reader mode on websites that if I simply disabled js entirely would refuse to load anything at all. The viewer itself might have minimal or no js but it's not quite the same.
samtheDamned··on This Month in Ladybird – July 2026
The progress each month is so impressive to see, I'm always looking forward to the next blog post from them.

> The Gtk port is gone . We’re focusing our efforts on making the Qt port look solid everywhere instead (#10536).

I'm sad to see this, but I understand not duplicating efforts. Maybe someone will be interested in filling this niche once the alpha release comes around.

samtheDamned··on Flavor Graveyard
I think it's interesting that most of these were cancelled ages ago. The most recent cancellations seem to be in 2012.
samtheDamned··on Captcha proves you're human. HATCHA proves you're not
ah I thought it was a reference to "Irish need not apply" phrase from job postings that would discriminate against Irish applicants. This is a less off-putting reference.
samtheDamned··on Job application asked for my SAT scores
They're known for asking odd questions like "how did you perform in math in high school" and "please justify your performance in math in high school". It was actually my guess as well before I read the post.
samtheDamned··on Hacker News but for independent blogs
This would be really cool. With the process of allowing fediverse logins it would be nice to also be able to use lemmy accounts since right now those don't seem to work. (That might be related to the HN hug though I'm not sure).
samtheDamned··on Hacker News but for Independent Blogs
I can't speak to other fediverse software but I tried a few lemmy servers to no avail. My mastodon instance is under maintenance so I guess I'll have to wait until that's done to sign up.
samtheDamned··on Your ePub Is fine
This is similar to my experience doing a research project for a fellowship. I had a barebones LaTeX file but I pushed doing the proper formatting for when I was finished writing and then had a hell of a time trying to get it all working properly right before the submission date haha.
samtheDamned··on Banned Book Library in a Wi-Fi Smart Light Bulb
This project and especially one of the closing notes[1] reminds me of a more mature DIY project to make a mesh node using a simple solar lamp[2]. I love the creativity on display here and I especially appreciate all the links to the other blogs and sites that helped you along the way.

1: > I was talking with a friend about this idea and the storage limitation and he thought it would be cool to have these devices form a mesh network

samtheDamned··on Show HN: I built 80 mini-games using Fable before it was shut down
If just using all the same pieces verbatim is a liability then "cobalt vault" would be at risk since after a quick playthrough I haven't run into anything but the original shapes.
samtheDamned··on Changing how we develop Ladybird
My understanding is that the people working on ladybird are compensated for their full time positions, so I would also expect any future positions to be similar.
samtheDamned··on Pwnd Blaster: Hacking your PC using your speaker without ever touching it
If we could started teaching Morse Code in standard curriculum then in about 18 years or so we could finally subsidize smart lightbulbs with blinking ads for products and then we could stop selling pesky "dumb" bulbs.
samtheDamned··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
I wasn't aware he was behind the oldest view. That makes me more excited to see this movie because that was really good on what couldn't have been much of a budget to begin with.
samtheDamned··on A Wayland Compositor in Minecraft
Yeah the appeal to me would be the ability to have my desktop experience spread throughout an established home built in minecraft. I think in reality the added friction in a setup like that would be enormous but it's a pleasant thought.
samtheDamned··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
Yep this is how I use HN as well. /new is definitely interesting when I do open it (usually after submitting) but because of the lack of existing discussion I don't usually seek it out day to day. It can definitely be rewarding though to be able to start the discussion on a new submission when it relates to an area of your own expertise though.
