samtheDamned··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
Administration and participation in arguments or opinion based debates should not coincide. Using a personal account for personal issues instead of using an administrator is more respectable in my opinion.
samtheDamned··on A $20k electric truck with manual windows and no screens? Meet Slate Auto
While I believe the commenter above was referring to electric pickup truck options, this is a very nicely laid out comment and I appreciate the effort put into it.

Reminds me of the Haiku window manager a little[1]

samtheDamned··on NoTab – Preview links in current webpage, say goodbye to tabs
I've always wondered how web browsing would handle a windowed approach instead of tabs. I don't see anything about firefox though, any plans there?

Edit: The Elon Musk chatbot linked at the bottom is a little off-putting

samtheDamned··on First hormone-free male birth control pill enters human trials
Islam typically sides with people doing what they have to to live, including eating pork if that is what it takes to survive. In regards to abortion, the mothers life takes paramount.

These videos were a huge part of my linux learning experience, thank you for your work over these past years.
samtheDamned··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
> because your hate is so totally different from their kind of hate

I just want to suggest that there may be a difference between hating a person for something they were born with, or for an uncontrollable feature of a person, compared to hating someone for explicit choices they have made.

Not saying that hating people for any reason is necessarily okay, but I think an argument can be made that there is a difference between those two cases of hatred.

samtheDamned··on Unofficial Windows 7 Service Pack 2
If you haven't heard about it already I think you'd be interested in the [ReactOS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReactOS#Development) project which has been working on building an OS that is binary compatible with Windows Server 2003 while being GPL licensed. It's far from daily drivable but it's a fascinating little project.
samtheDamned··on Show HN: Fast Travel – Supercharge your search bar
This is pretty cool, I like the google (pre-ai) option.
samtheDamned··on A look at Firefox forks
I believe that would be mullvad. Tor browser without the tor.
samtheDamned··on A look at Firefox forks
At least with firefox based browsers I believe the actual user profile folder is pretty compatible across browsers, copying that should copy every aspect of what makes your browser yours, though it might contain extras that won't be utilized by vanilla firefox.
samtheDamned··on Show HN: A personal YouTube frontend based on yt-dlp
Monetizing this would put YT-DLP in danger of having legal action taken against it, or at least being shut down.

samtheDamned··on The Return of Digg, a Star of an Earlier Internet Era
Lemmy has grown quite a lot and it has been easy to replace reddit with for things like tech focused news and discussion. Unfortunately smaller community focused subreddits still don't have a great alternative but with lemmy slowly growing who knows maybe new communities can pop up.
samtheDamned··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
This is huge for me. I've wanted a framework for years and got really close to purchasing a 13" but I can't pull myself away from 2 in 1s (or really just any laptop with a touchscreen). The fact that it's going to be budget focused also excites me as a student, I hope that screen quality isn't too compromised.

samtheDamned··on Family poisoned after using AI-generated mushroom identification book
I would take any story from reddit with a huge grain of salt, but even if this case is not real there are real AI generated books that pretend to be real books, and mycology books in particular have had attention brought to them due to the dangers inherent to the misinformation they may contain.
samtheDamned··on Family poisoned after using AI-generated mushroom identification book
This was something that was bound to happen and is going to happen again unless we get more serious regulation around AI publishing.

> It lists the author as having a Masters Degree in Mycology from University of East Ontario. A search later revealed there is no "University of East Ontario."

This has got to be criminal negligence.

samtheDamned··on Ladybird browser update (March 2024) [video]
The little audio indicators are such a nice touch. Also seeing websites like SoundCloud and GitHub performing so well is incredible. I love watching this project grow and develop.
samtheDamned··on Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America
Balloons are a very small portion of helium usage and the helium used is not usually pure enough to be put towards more important applications anyways.

samtheDamned··on The Death Star and the Final Trench Run (2017)
Yeah I'm in the same boat here I never even considered it taking place in the equatorial trench, the size established early on was huge and it was very clean compared to the cramped and chaotic trench featured in the trench run.
samtheDamned··on New study finds electric vehicles are driven less than gas cars
That seems to be the same theory as the above comment though, as the inverse means that those who live further and have lower income may not be as likely to buy electric
samtheDamned··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
I hadn't heard about the ARM Thinkpad, that's very interesting. For me the reason ARM on the Framework is an exciting possibility is that you can switch out the mainboard with the processor. The X13s is $1,300 which is quite the investment into such an early platform. With a framework laptop, you could have an ARM mainboard, but with the ability to switch it out with an x86-64 mainboard without having to invest in a whole new laptop. It could also go the other way, having a laptop on hand and wanting to dive into ARM, you would just have to buy an ARM mainboard instead of an entire laptop.
samtheDamned··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
On Linux AMD drivers are by far some of the best, and the driver support is miles better both on the end of the 1st party support as well as 3rd party software support.

There's a few instances where AMD GPU drivers even outshine their windows counterparts like in OpenGL performance. Intel's driver support is great as well, but their performance recently has not matched AMD, and their iGPUs don't compare to AMD's iGPUs.

Also for beefier laptops with discreet GPUs, intel up until very recently would need an NVIDIA card to get decent performance which would require NVIDIA drivers, which are notorious for complicating things on Linux. On the other hand AMD laptops with discreet AMD gpus already have their drivers built into the kernel which removes almost any potential complication.

Also there's personal preference, which in my case leans toward AMD because of their generally more open stance with their new technology, like raytracing and FSR which is contrasted by NVIDIAs typically closed off approach to the same things. Intel isn't as bad as NVIDIA in this department either but this is just personal opinion.

Lastly AMD CPUs are generally cheaper than intel, and in the last few generations performed better overall than intel.

TL:DR AMD on linux has great drivers with good support, the synergy between AMD's CPUs and GPUs and their combined APUs are very good, and personally I appreciate AMD's more open approach to technology like FSR, even if they aren't anywhere near perfect.

samtheDamned··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
Yeah the possibilities are exciting to say the least, the ability to specialize your laptop into an AI processing powerhouse on the fly could be very valuable.
