samtheDamned··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
Yep this is how I use HN as well. /new is definitely interesting when I do open it (usually after submitting) but because of the lack of existing discussion I don't usually seek it out day to day. It can definitely be rewarding though to be able to start the discussion on a new submission when it relates to an area of your own expertise though.
samtheDamned··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
I think this would be an okay place to ask about the vouching process since it seems like a big part of the /new sifting system. When I'm browsing on /new as well as on /active (which I browse much more frequently) I'll see dead links that seem like valid posts and that I would enjoy discussing, but I'm a little worried about "over-vouching" so I tend to play it very cautious. Am I overthinking that process? Outside of running it against the guidelines/faq is there a way to see why a post was flagged?
samtheDamned··on Show HN: Gaia Atlas – Local Stellar Map
I like the ability to map out the constellations and see how they connect from different angles. I don't think I've seen something like that before.
samtheDamned··on Last.fm is now independent
I guess thats better than being enshittified
samtheDamned··on A Wayland Compositor in Minecraft
I wonder how this would pair with a VR mod. It doesn't seem like Vivecraft supports the version this was posted for at the moment, but if they had the ability to play nice that seems like it would would be a fun way to experience software.
samtheDamned··on Show HN: Countries where you can leave your MacBook at a random coffee shop
I think it's interesting that this map shows the Sahrawi Republic, that's not a very common feature.
samtheDamned··on This Month in Ladybird – April 2026
Same here. I also think having multiple front-ends is a good way to demonstrate the flexibility of the engine.
samtheDamned··on Ti-84 Evo
I'm not an expert in this department but I wonder if battery life is a factor here. My Ti-84+ has not fully died once since I was in middle school (as a college graduate now). It can survive an entire year out of use and would still have a usable charge when I would pick it back up for a new math class.

samtheDamned··on MacBook Neo and how the iPad should be
I was one of those requests. I have used 2in1s since college because I like the flexibility in positioning that 2in1s provide that regular laptops rarely or never do. The ability to open them to nearly 180 degrees when I'm using them on a surface that is low relative to me, I also like to hook up a second portable monitor and keyboard/mouse and fold it into a tent shape to provide more room. I use "tablet mode" for reading due to the smaller footprint (this is especially useful on public transit), but with the right desktop (Fedora Gnome for me) the rest of the laptop is relatively comfortable to use in tablet mode as well. When the Framework 12 was announced I immediately snatched one up and it has been excellent so far at all of these.

I will concede, though, that for a regular laptop without 2in1 functionality, I am a little confused at the value proposal. Maybe someone wants a comfortable pinch and zoom experience?

samtheDamned··on Rockstar hackers set to release GTA 6 data breach as 'demands not met'
To be clear this doesn't seem to include the actual game, just data surrounding it and the marketing as well.
samtheDamned··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
Just adding for posterity that the RSS feed appears to be functional now
samtheDamned··on Show HN: BAREmail ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ – minimalist Gmail client for bad WiFi
Gmail used to have a lightweight fallback but they shut it down relatively recently (couple of years I think).
samtheDamned··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
This was an incredible read! Especially for what looks like the first post to this blog too? I wanted to subscribe to the RSS feed but unfortunately it gives a 404 error.
samtheDamned··on VitruvianOS – Desktop Linux Inspired by the BeOS
I tried to install a quick VM to answer this exact question but I had some difficult getting it running in Gnome Boxes.
samtheDamned··on Review: Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
Only if you turn it on for the whole screen at all times, and you are still getting a privacy screen out of it so its not a loss with no benefits.
samtheDamned··on Gnome 50 Released
> Under the hood, the foundations for web filtering support has also been added — a backend service that can enforce content filters for child accounts once the user interface is completed in future updates, allowing age‑appropriate web restrictions without breaking web security or relying on curated lists.

I wonder if this is specific to Epiphany or if it's across the board for the user. If it's just for epiphany I think it's interesting that it would be one of the first "advantages" to using it over firefox or some other browser, at least for your children. Until now as far as I'm aware it has just been a pretty, though unfortunately rough performance-wise, browser with limited extension support.

Edit: Also this might play into the looming age verification laws spreading around the world

samtheDamned··on Things Linux Can Do That Windows Still Can't
This is the first I've heard about this! I have always slightly missed the authority Control-Alt-Delete seemed to have on windows and this does seem to be a good (maybe better) alternative.
samtheDamned··on The Browser Becomes Your WordPress
I read 3 'It's not X it's Y' sentences in a span of just 4 sentences total. Unfortunate that this is how they choose to present this product because I think the idea is good, but it seems that it's not interesting enough to WP to justify actually writing about it themselves.
samtheDamned··on Windows 11 after two decades of macOS: okay, but also awful
Rainmeter is another popular choice
samtheDamned··on Why consumer choice is stripped away and how the tech industry profits from it
Because of how silent enshittification is becoming the norm, whenever I find a new service or program or app that I like I always wonder how long I actually have to enjoy the app before it starts removing features, ends interoperability, shuts down their APIs, or sells out to someone else who will do it for them. I'm not necessarily an open source ideologue, but it's the only type of software I feel moderately safe with making a part of my digital routine.
samtheDamned··on Twitch: "Hey, come back! This commercial break can't play while you're away."
ha! This was my first thought too. Ridiculous behavior either way, ads have gotten out of control.
samtheDamned··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
I'm glad I'm not alone in finding the specific emphasis on drawing the line at domestic surveillance a bit odd. Later they also state they are against "provid[ing] a product that puts America’s warfighters and civilians at risk" (emphasis mine). Either way I'm glad they have lines at all, but it doesn't come across as particularly reassuring for people in places the US targets (wedding hosts and guests for example).

samtheDamned··on Blue light filters don't work – controlling total luminance is a better bet
The whole point of placebo is that it has an effect though, just not one based on a real change.
samtheDamned··on The End of Mail in Denmark – Who will mourn the last letter?
After reading the article this doesn't seem like a good choice for the US. It doesn't even seem very great for Denmark either. The US is vast and has plenty of people who live very remotely compared to Denmark, with the post office as one of the few reliable links to the outside world. There's also people who rely on the USPS for prescriptions which would be seriously hurt if all mail suddenly had a profit motive applied to it.
samtheDamned··on Pixel 10a
I love the lack of a camera bump. I hope there is a large enough market for that to keep the design around; I'm not the target audience but I hear laments for the days when a phone would lie flat all the time.
samtheDamned··on Ask HN: How do you motivate your humans to stop AI-washing their emails?
I feel like this could have done without the ableist quip, however I also see this in my industry as well, especially among higher-ups. Funnily enough this was the topic of another discussion yesterday[0].

Edit: Which I see was just shared by someone else here hours before me, so I guess I'm not all that safe from the brain rot myself haha.

samtheDamned··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
I don't go to starbucks personally but I've been to local ice cream shops, Cafes, fast food businesses, and others and this isn't too uncommon. I'd say it happens about 15% of the time? Its usually at places where tips aren't as expected anyways, but not always.
samtheDamned··on Making a font with ligatures to display thirteenth-century monk numerals
