sampullman··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
It should be possible, but maybe not trivial with A/B testing/etc.
sampullman··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
What if I use it in an isolated environment and only work on open source code with it?
sampullman··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
Which reports? There are lots of people watching model quality now, so it seems like there would be clear evidence if it happened already.
sampullman··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
It's all just conjecture, your hypothesis about moving systems equally so.

But you seem adamant that there's no chance the providers serve slightly quantized models for subscription users during high loads, or otherwise tweak models for requests from those users.

It's tricky to prove either way, but the chance is not zero.

sampullman··on OpenAI: Tomorrow we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscription
That seems like more than partially ripped.
sampullman··on Pirating the Pirates
I don't see why it matters to the argument if the original creator is alive. I also don't believe the creator has a special obligation to make things available. But I generally agree with the GP, once something is released and widely popular, society now shares some ownership. There should be some way to access it, at least as part of the historical record.

It's not the creator's responsibility to facilitate that, but they also shouldn't be able to hinder it.

sampullman··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
That's a very slippery slope. What are you going to ban next, extreme sports? Running too fast? Eating french fries?
sampullman··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
Price and speed are the difference. But deepseek flash is usually fast and cheap enough, so the use cases are somewhat limited.
sampullman··on Hijacking the PS5's RTMP stream
I just click "Install" and then "Play" in Steam on my non-Windows machine. I guess you can't play Fortnight or whatever, but it works great for me.
sampullman··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
Writing is a means of expression and communication. Code can be those things, but that's not its primary purpose.

I think "solved coding" is taking it too far, but for many projects, the mechanical aspect of it has been removed or reduced greatly.

LLMs will have a much harder time "solving writing", because they cannot develop their own style and so are severely limited, creatively. This is less important for coding.

sampullman··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
There's always going to be skill expression, whether you can find a way to make that part of it interesting is a different question.
sampullman··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
This is the one thing I'm curious about, what's the next generation of devs going to look like? Just a bunch of people who treat the codebase as a black box, pump out slop, and call it a day when the feature works?

I imagine there will be value in being able to understand every line of code for a while, because many (most?) things don't seem amenable to long term vibe coding. But how will that knowledge be obtained? Maybe there will be a much smaller pool of devs with the patience to actual learn bespoke software development.

Or, AI will actually get good enough that vibe coding is better in every case than mindful development. I guess the main factor is how long it takes for that to happen.

sampullman··on Is your Postgres migration safe or not safe?
Models don't necessarily produce documentation that's good for other models. It's still good to spend some time paring down AI to something simpler, clearer, and more concise.
sampullman··on One Month Without AI
Any of the latest models can one shot a modern 2FA workflow given the right context in a sane codebase.

The critical part is providing it a way to validate its work end to end. Without that, it's similar to asking a human to implement a feature with pen and paper.

sampullman··on ASML currently sells no chipmaking machines in Europe, executive says
70% extra on top of a trillion or two in investment is a relatively small price to pay when faced with the possibility of that being your only option at some point in the future.
sampullman··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
It's still true for now. AI can't yet make a game with complex mechanics feel good to a human, although it can speed up a lot of the implementation.
sampullman··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
It's about a hundred billion total, and there's a single reason the war won't end - the invading nation refuses to leave. There is no other reason.

And anyway, it's not as if the money is freely given. Some of it's expiring equipment, some are loans or exchanges for the promise of resources, etc. Yes, it is a modicum. A few days of bombing Iran has cost us almost half the total amount given to Ukraine, for negative value.

Framing it as trillions and blaming the nation being attacked (all for what, having some nice land with resources?) makes it very hard to take any of your other points seriously.

sampullman··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
It feels totally different than offering a modicum of aid to a western aligned country fighting an existential invasion from an antagonistic former superpower.
sampullman··on I am done with this shit
I'm not so sure, I love tinkering but mostly see the code as a means to an end.

AI lets me flesh out both hardware and software side projects quickly that I never had time for. Most of them are experiments that won't be shared.

It's nice to have Codex/Claude whip up an SPI DMA driver while I'm doing something more fun, for example.

sampullman··on Transit rewards
It's good to have dedicated bus lanes, but the point of a bus isn't to get from point A to point B faster than a car.

It's a part of a transit ecosystem that makes it possible to survive without a car. It fills in the the gaps where it's not economical to add train/metro lines.

sampullman··on Attention is all you have
What's the point though? I'd like to think scrolling HN is healthier than Facebook. But is it better than curated subreddits, or Instagram/TikTok showing you stuff about your friends and hobbies?

I don't think it's pedantic to have a bit of self awareness, although engaging in the discussion instead of writing a pithy one liner would be better.

sampullman··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
It's unfortunate, but to come across as genuine now I think you have to actively avoid AI-isms.

In this case it feels AI generated with human polish, or vice versa. A couple tells are "One caveat worth stating up front..." and of course, "...the shape of the language itself...".

sampullman··on Typesafe-computer-use drives a Mac toward a goal for 1/50th of a cent per step
But it takes so little effort to wade through an LLM readme and cut out or edit it down to something palatable.

Just the bare minimum effort to do that would be nice.

sampullman··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
I'm not sure what your argument is. I don't have anything against fanfiction, but a couple of sites with a few million users falls under my definition of niche. "Extreme" might be taking it a bit far, but it's a long distance from mainstream.
sampullman··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Fanfiction is already an extreme niche.
sampullman··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
If you don't have the authenticator backup codes and you didn't turn on cloud sync in the app, you might be out of luck.

You can get a replacement SIM though and use it with a new phone, so the phone number recovery option should work.

sampullman··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
We'll have to check back in 5 or 10 years to see if anything new has been created.
sampullman··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
I don't think that's true. Domain experts with the desire to create and experiment aren't going away any time soon.
sampullman··on PCB is brought to you by Fable 5
The feedback loop is too long, it's not like a software development harness that can direct the model to write some tests for complex behavior, and iterate until they pass.

There a lots of things that can be subtly wrong, and it gets much worse as your signal frequency increases, or you have to deal with high power/radio/etc. The model (agent) has no way to validate its work.

sampullman··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
How is that not a form of censorship? It is direct suppression of certain forms of speech.

YouTube has its problems but I don't think it's had quite as strong of an effect on language.
