Hi, I'm Samiur Rahman. I'm an entrepreneurial engineer who just loves solving problems. I guess that's why I'm on Hacker News, because I also love seeing others solve problems and talk about it.

samiur1204··on Launch YC S21: Meet the Batch, Thread #9
Curious how YC decided to order these threads of companies. My guess is it's quite a bit worse to be in thread #9 than #1.

Yeah that should actually be the easiest to do for us.

Totally! Thanks for sharing and we'll keep it in mind for the future.

Honestly, we're so early we don't have a take out process yet. But we definitely want to support that when people ask, and it also means that since we don't have a process yet, the first few people get to tell us how they want things exported and we'll make it work :).
samiur1204··on Journal 2.0: Mental Space for What Matters
We actually do use this technique in our search (nearest neighbors on document embeddings). Collaboration is a big part of what we want to do as well, so client side encryption gets even hairier. It might be doable, but I think the effort to get that to work properly may not be the best use of time for a small company trying to build a valuable product first :).

Thanks, very nice to hear =). Looking forward to your feedback!

1. Thanks for letting us know! I'll definitely look into that to see if we can submit to Microsoft. 2. On the bottom right of the app, there's a support button that opens a menu. Click Share Feedback and send us a message there. Thanks!

Nope, we haven't. Part of that is we are trying to help you save content from many places and be able to provide great search for you as well, which means we need to be able to index the content server side. We do encrypt the content server side, making the content inaccessible to anyone at Journal without explicitly accessing the decryption keys, for which we have an audit trail. Also makes it harder for someone to access your content if for some reason we got hacked.

We currently integrate with Evernote making your Evernote notes searchable and viewable from Journal, but we intend to make that a converter into Journal very soon.

Are there other tools you'd like us to support import from?

samiur1204··on Journal 2.0: Mental Space for What Matters
Currently, you can't, but great suggestion! My background is in Machine Learning and I'd love to have that myself. What would be your preferred way to get math notation into notes? What do you think about a LaTeX formula inserter like http://mathquill.com/
samiur1204··on Journal 2.0: Mental Space for What Matters
Hey, great questions: - We do support markdown as you're typing (they're turned into the appropriate element as you type). Currently, pasting markdown has some bugs, but we definitely intend to fix those soon. - Right now, you export a single note as a PDF. I figure you're asking, "can I export all my notes and take them with me". The answer to that is currently no, but we fully intend to support that. And if you need that in the meantime, we'll definitely do a one-time export for you. - Yes, you can create checkboxes in markdown, and we also have simple checklists ala Google Keep as objects. However, we don't have complex todo features such as due dates, assignees, dependencies, etc.

Great point, definitely need to add the pricing to our website! And no, we're not an open source app. In terms of pricing, we have a Free tier and a $10/month "Journal Plus" tier. Currently the differences between Free vs. Journal Plus are: 1. number of app integrations (2 vs. unlimited) 2. amount of data synchronized from those apps (last 14 days vs. years) 3. file size upload limit (10MB vs. unlimited)

One commitment I can make is that we'll never monetize off of your data or by dumping algorithmic ads on you. So, to do that, we're creating a subscription scheme that allows us to provide some powerful but expensive features, but also provide a very useful free tier.

That's definitely a bug. Sorry for that experience! If you're on the desktop app, please hit create account before trying to sign in. That message is leftover from when we were an invite only product, and only shows up if you try to sign in without signing up. Sorry once again, and we'll have that fixed immediately!

I say that because I'm a big fan of all your recommendations, and also think you recommended them in a way that doesn't come off as patronising or condescending. Idk what your preferred method of communication is, but if you can do Twitter, please drop me a message on Twitter @samiur1204.

samiur1204··on Journal raises $1.5M to bring Google-like search to your personal life
Great question. We didn't go into too much detail, but we've built a conceptual search index which maps all these disparate items into vectors that are then used for searching, similarity, ranking, etc. Here's a talk by me from a while ago about an earlier version of the system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4O42EWfHoo&t=5s

We can go more in depth on the current version of our system if you think that'd be interesting!

samiur1204··on Journal raises $1.5M to bring Google-like search to your personal life
Great question. One of the things we're trying to do is encrypt everything in a way that requires multiple hacks to actually decrypt the content. We're keeping the encrypted content on our databases, but using multiple private keys (one tied to the user, one stored in a separate vault). Journal employees cannot decrypt a user's data without unlocking a vault on our end, and our auth store.
samiur1204··on Journal raises $1.5M to bring Google-like search to your personal life
Hi guys,

Samiur from Journal here (https://usejournal.com). We started Journal with the goal of reducing information overload, and to see what would be possible if our knowledge  -  about people, projects, and ideas -  was connected and easily accessible.

We think of what we're building as a new kind of journal. You write notes in it, save interesting links, and drop in important documents and messages for later. When you need something, ask Journal, and it helps you find it.

Eventually, we see it becoming a connected home to gather and share knowledge. You use the best services for issues, documents, messaging and more — and Journal ties them all together. We currently support integrations to Google (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) Slack, Dropbox (Files and Paper), Evernote, Pocket, and Atlassian (Jira and Confluence).

We're coming out of community beta today, and would love to hear your feedback!

If you'd like an early access code, please reply to this comment.

samiur1204··on Terry Davis, Author of TempleOS, has passed away [unconfirmed, mods please rm]
Genuinely curious about what other people think about this, but why do people think it's an acceptable excuse for formerly mentally healthy people making insanely offensive comments after they start suffering from a mental health issue? I truly feel compassion for those going through mental health issues, but is it possible that the people who become offensive after becoming mentally ill always thought these things but just had a filter? Should we accept that?
samiur1204··on Machine intelligence, part 1
Urgh, every couple weeks, it seems like someone prominent in the Tech industry, but actually knowledgeable about Machine Learning or "Artificial Intelligence", makes some outlandish claim. We are nowhere close to "AI" in the terms that Elon Musk and Sam Altman are talking about. We might just as well start preparing for aliens that have superintelligence and have found earth.

All these kinds of comments are so distracting from the really awesome work real ML researchers are doing. One of them, Yann LeCunn, said: “Hype is dangerous to AI. Hype killed AI four times in the last five decades. AI Hype must be stopped.”

I wrote about this topic just a months ago: http://blog.samiurr.com/artificial-intelligence-no-were-not-...

Hey Rey,

Fantastic idea! Absolutely love it, as I see it as something very necessary for the vast array of social services available. That said, I'd like to make a small critique, mostly inconsequential and probably more of an indication of my absurd cynicism, but nevertheless, here it is: when I first read the title of the post, my thoughts were "oh brother, another user-privileged guy purporting to know how to solve the worlds problems." The title implied to me that you guys were claiming to do a lot more than you actually are doing (like I thought you guys were claiming to magically solve income disparity across the world). I obviously did, however, read the article, so take this with a grain of salt.

Anyway, love the idea and will be forwarding it on to all my friends!

Yeah, seriously, that post seems overly nitpicky, and the sort of "feedback" that I hope startup founders can filter out. "Head" is a commonly used term in the catering business.

Thanks, that would be awesome! As a side note, this is decidedly still in alpha. Feedback is the most important thing for us right now.
samiur1204··on Snapchat: another example of the hubris of privilege and systematic bias in tech
Haha, that's great. I'm sorry, of course you're right. There's no way someone who has never struggled for money has no advantage over the guy who graduated from school with $100k in debt. While we're at it, we can also declare that racism and sexism is over.
samiur1204··on Snapchat: another example of the hubris of privilege and systematic bias in tech
OP here. Completely agree that "wrong" is a subjective and relative measure. It depends on what one's priorities are: utility to the world or personal profit or whatever else. I did make an assumption about Evan's intentions and thought-process, but his action remains the same. He passed up taking cash for Snapchat, an app that has no real value in my personal opinion. He also passed up the opportunity, in my opinion, to take that cash and create something of real value. I may be wrong to come to those conclusions, but they are my opinions. I suppose you can call it hubris to post my opinion on the internet, as it is obviously comparable to turning down billions of dollars for a useless product.
