They buy a company, not a repo.

They buy the team, the know-how, the customers, the brand. The repo is open source up until now, but they can create a paid offering with premium features over the open source code. They can also offer specialized hosting for that solution (which is a very clear advantage of joining with cloud flare)

Dependence on assistantialism is a real phenomenon. Here in Colombia (and probably all over the developing world?) it has been well proven that permanent help does create complacency and dependency. Help must be conditioned to effort and have a limit, so recipients have an incentive to improve their conditions under some timeline.

salomonk_mur··on Why Startup Wealth Never Trickles Down to Employees
10 million is stretching it, but it's not uncommon for failed startups to get acquihired (their tech/customers are still valuable for another business) and the founder know-how is valuable for making those assets productive. So them getting guaranteed jobs with salaries is completely expected.

1 million over 4 years is not crazy depending on position.

Me and everyone I know in a professional setting makes written appointments for calls. We write it down in Google Calendar or similar, with a link to where the call is taking place.

You don't?

salomonk_mur··on Rewilding the Self
I wonder how many wild animals would be killed and eaten yearly in a world without humans. Are those deaths horrific too?

Would the earth itself be a horrific hellhole given it would be sustaining billions of deaths, each year?

I have never understood this argument against animal farming. I'm all for humane treatment of livestock, but we can't fool ourselves into believing that the corresponding biomass in a completely "wild" earth would be having a better time, or a better death, than our cows and chickens.

Biased comment from a local: I don't think it's dismal at all.

Unsafe depending on zone, bad traffic and rainy. Those are it's main faults. But it has many advantages.

But you can get most anywhere worth going in a bike, and practically the whole city has amenities within walking distance, so traffic is a non-issue for many.

It offers an amazing cost-effectiveness to quality of living. It costs 1/3rd of NYC to live here (cheapest large city in the Americas), and you get a huge cosmopolitan deal out of it.

The cultural offer is amazing, particularly restaurants but there's plenty of concerts, festivals, theatre and more to attend all year.

People are friendly and welcoming (except in traffic, it really brings out the worse)

Only thing I really don't like about it is not feeling safe in many parts, with the largest risk being getting your phone snatched.

37dba is practically nothing. Like a very soft whisper from a couple meters away. Remember the scale is logarithmic, 37 is almost 2 orders of magnitude below 52.

salomonk_mur··on Ask HN: Why do banking apps care about your phone OS
Besides the security part, many companies us that data in their Machine Learning models. I've used it myself extensively over the past 10 years in Fintech.

As a small tidbit of information, did you know iPhone users are ~40% less likely to default on a small loan than Android users (at least in my country).

And the differences go all the way to specific models, OS versions, installed apps, IP range, browser of choice...

Doesn't mean there isn't some meaningful signal in its results. Signal/noise ratio might be lower than with actual science, but there is so much data using the framework that the signal part is still useful.

Your exercise can't: 1. Tell me who other people's friends are. 2. Change it's output if a spammer stops pinging after 1 hour. 3. Count the amount of times a person has pinged in their lifetimes. 4. Build a pyramid 5. Output Pi 6. Make me lasagna
salomonk_mur··on Show HN: Myphotos.site – Make a gallery website from Google Photos
SEO has changed a lot over the past year. It is now very hard to be featured on the top of the first page even with the best content. Several colleagues have seen their search engine traffic plummet 50-80%.

I recommend going for other marketing strategies such as collaborations with bloggers and influencers in your niche (photo enthusiasts?). Better targeted, less vulnerable to the whims of Google's algorithm.

salomonk_mur··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Always go cheap on tools you are trying out.

If 6 months pass and you are still using it, and notice it not being enough for your use, then get a quality one.

I've seen many quality tools that have been used once or twice after years, bought out of impulse.

salomonk_mur··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
The audio sync is really hard to get right on homemade setups (I tried).

Sonos really sucks at software, but they get that right. And the speakers are good quality.

salomonk_mur··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
HP Spectre X360. The wifi card started failing less than 1 year in and there was no way of getting it fixed. It was touted as Linux compatible, but the stylus barely worked with the latest kernel. Sound NEVER worked from the integrated speakers (in Linux, Windows was OK). I digged through so many alsa and pulse-audio posts that it was probably 10% of that year's time wasted. It wouldn't go to sleep when closed (randomly, 8 times out of 10 it would) , so it kept overheating in my backpack.

HP + Linux, never again.

salomonk_mur··on Andrej Karpathy on learning (should never be fun)
Completely agree. As commented elsewhere, the main driver in true learning is practice.

I also wholly reject the idea that this "edutainment" content is useless. Same as spaced repetition, once you see some concepts often enough (which the algorithm guarantees if it knows you are into that topic), you will learn something. I don't consume such content myself, but to dismiss it just looks as rejecting formats different than what you used.

salomonk_mur··on State of Python 3.13 performance: Free-threading
What APIs were broken? They couldn't be in the standard library.

If the dependency was in external modules and you didn't have pinned versions, then it is to be expected (in almost any active language) that some APIs will break.
