salamandersauce··on M1 Thunderbolt ports don’t fully support USB 3.1 Gen 2
Huion? I've heard sanded down (so they fit in the port) USB C cables that support DP output works.
salamandersauce··on Tipy – One Hand Keyboard
Welcome to the world of ergo niche keyboards. Basically everything that isn't a Microsoft Ergo or clone is $200+ and it only gets more expensive as you get further from that. An alternative to this is building one yourself.
salamandersauce··on Live Streaming a Macintosh Plus
Mine seems to accept it and just strip it. I'm not sure the exact HDCP version it accepts but I can capture a Blu-ray from my PS3 with it which you are not normally supposed to do (it won't even play Blu-rays over component).
salamandersauce··on Show HN: Annotate PDFs in Markdown
There is the org-noter package for emacs that will do a similar thing with PDFs but for org mode instead of markdown.
salamandersauce··on I have no capslock and I must scream
Probably Karabiner Elements?
salamandersauce··on I have no capslock and I must scream
There's utilities like keyd and kmonad to remap keys system wide on Linux. I've used keyd because the config is simpler for what I want. Works in tty, X11, remote. Also does layers and other fancy tricks.
salamandersauce··on Google could have updated the Pixel 3 until Android 13, it just didn't want to
For a phone. Android has set the bar incredibly low. Kobo has supported their $130 Kobo Touch eReader from 2011 longer than any iOS device. On PCs its trivial to run modern software even on ancient hardware like a Pentium 4 with Linux/BSDs. Even Windows can let you easily get 15 years out of a device.
salamandersauce··on Apple’s Mistake (2009)
It wasn't good then either. Still a bloated mess and even worse you were more forced to use it as literally nothing else could do something like put a CBZ in a 3rd party app unless it happened to support Dropbox or something similar. It's just terrible.
salamandersauce··on Bringing Palm OS devices back online – A journey into vintage computing (2019)
The GC didn't ship with a modem at all even in early not cost reduced models. There may have been some bundles with a modem for PSO1&2 or Homeland but there was only 4 games in its entire library that could even go online.

The Dreamcast had a built in modem and some models of PS2 had one built in.

salamandersauce··on Ask HN: How big is your personal library?
My physical book library is not very big. Maybe 30 books and a lot are just textbooks I should probably get rid of with few exceptions. I deliberately got rid of a lot of them. I rarely buy physical books anymore. I think I bought 1 in the past year.

My ebook library is much bigger. Several hundred to low thousands depending on whether stuff like individual comics count. I don't currently have it well organized and in one place. There's also the question of whether PDFs of books I downloaded from the library count as books I own? (Some never expire).

There's a mix of reference material and recreational but it's mostly recreational, at least stuff I purchased. I'm still not satisfied with the state of ePub textbooks so I'll only buy digitally as a last resort option.

salamandersauce··on Nix: An idea whose time has come
I recently briefly tried Nix and yeah the language seems a bit tough with not too many resources floating around. I really don't want to learn a whole language just for my package manager. But then I discovered Guix which is inspired by Nix but uses Scheme instead of a custom thing. Seems more sensible and easier to understand as I know a little bit of lisp already.
salamandersauce··on Windows 11 Pro will soon require a Microsoft Account during initial setup
Can't you just deactivate the Home license and then install Pro? Or just try installing Pro then deactivating the Home license? I only have Pro keys attached to my account but I've shuffled them about between different computers.
salamandersauce··on From macOS to FreeBSD
Not for the internet but Wii U uses 5GHz for streaming to the gamepad.
salamandersauce··on From macOS to FreeBSD
A lot of low end consumer devices don't. For example the PS Vita supports N but not 5GHz, nor do most kindles until the latest Paperwhite. It was also super common for cheap $400 laptops in 2011 to have N but not 5Ghz support.
salamandersauce··on From macOS to FreeBSD
There is 5GHz N. Not as common in devices or routers though.
salamandersauce··on From macOS to FreeBSD
Well you lose full screen benefits of going full screen like no menu bar, no window title bar, the dock hides even if you normally like it not-hidden.

Yeah you can use rectangle or BTT or one of the other dozens of the third party apps to do window snapping but to me at least they never feel quite as nice as the native options in Windows, KDE, Gnome, etc. Not sure why.

salamandersauce··on Avoid the Apple App Store
Several of those are clearly ripping off assets from Windows minesweeper. Which is worse than mimicking gameplay. There's also no Wordle iOS app either, just a website.

Apple also happily accepted 2048 which is pretty much a straight up clone of the earlier Threes.

salamandersauce··on WebGL 2.0 Achieves Pervasive Support from All Major Web Browsers
The latest version of Firefox (97) at least claims to run on Android 5.0 which is from 2014. It runs fine on my Retroid Pocket which is on Android 6. So at the very least that's available.

EDIT: Chrome 98 also works on Android 6.

salamandersauce··on NATSpeech: High Quality Text-to-Speech Implementation with HuggingFace Demo
To me NATSpeech sounds better. This sounds worse than Amazon Alexa at least with my quick test.
salamandersauce··on Audiblegate
Does the narrator need to be involved in making edits, re-listen to recorded book, cutting and rearranging unwanted silences? Other than the occasional line redo if something is flubbed or off I don't see how that involves the narrator?
salamandersauce··on Apple's custom NVMes are amazingly fast – if you don't care about data integrity
Shitty software? My 2018 Mac Mini would crash every single time going to sleep on the last version of Mojave. I'm not alone in this as there's huge threads on MacRumors and Apple's support forum about it. Apple's "fix" was to just update to Catalina which indeed fixes it but doesn't really help if you want to run 32 bit software. Wouldn't surprise me if they did something similar again.
salamandersauce··on Google Should Kill Stadia
The problem with Steam family share is that it's so limited. You can't have two users playing different games from the same library online at the same time which is ridiculous. So there's no way for your brother to play your Call of Duty while you play CS:GO. Even if you're playing an offline game you have to explictly switch to offline mode or else the person sharing gets kicked. Even consoles handle it better with 2 users being allowed to at the very least 2 different games working if not the same game. Granted, Steam family library allows more account links but it's way more limited.

I'm not sure what Stadia's limits are but I can imagine that being a pro if more than one user can use the library at the same time.

salamandersauce··on Ask HN: Should we accept the “floppy disk icon” as the default save symbol?
It only took about 1000 years for designers to stop mucking about around with Chinese characters. Hopefully by the year 3000 the save icon will also be cemented.
salamandersauce··on Building an iPod for 2022
Already exist. Samsung made the Gear IconX with 4GB built in. I don't think they make them anymore though. Sony also makes the waterproof in ear Walkman, not airpods style but more traditional wireless headphones.
salamandersauce··on Free public domain ebooks in PDf, ePub, mobi formats
There's already open calculus textbooks (see link below for example) that can mention stuff like calculators and computers while also taking advantage of modern typesetting and modern writing styles. Notation has also changed over time, for example using a double struck Z to represent the set of integers only dates to the 1930s but is widely used and understood now.

salamandersauce··on NES 64 – Commodore 64 Kernal and Basic ROMs Ported to the NES
You could even save programs to a cassette tape. It's also why Excitebike has a save and load track function that seems to do nothing.
salamandersauce··on Building an iPod for 2022
You can also get that integrated into a bunch of Garmin's watches like the Vivoactive and Fenix lines. Not the cheapest stuff but it's also a heart rate monitor, GPS, etc.
salamandersauce··on Ask HN: How do you stay afloat in the subscription economy?
Me too. I discovered my local library has a pretty decent digital magazine and newspaper selection available to patrons for nothing. They are readable on tablets and work pretty well. I like to read them on my 10.3" eInk one. They don't have everything like the NYT but they definitely have a lot of stuff people have heard of.
salamandersauce··on Trudeau announces intention to freeze bank accounts of protestors
We have a minority government right now. It could be 2 months away.
salamandersauce··on Trudeau announces intention to freeze bank accounts of protestors
How much of the population do you think is actively involved in the protests right now? We should bow down and throw away our government for 1% of angry people? 0.01%? This just sounds like a recipe for chaos. A middle school could topple the government by standing on Ambassador bridge just because they don't like today's lunch menu.
