My name’s Shaun and I’m a Frontend/Product Engineer based in Brisbane, Australia (previously Cape Town, South Africa ).

I pivoted from rocks to code

Early on in my career as a Geologist, I was buried under an avalanche of manual processes, something was at fault, it was a bore and it wasn't very Gneiss

I knew there had to be a better way. So I taught myself how to code. All of a sudden I had superpowers, automating processes left, right and center, with some staff not even knowing what to do with their time anymore, I was the schist

It wasn’t enough; I wanted more superpowers. So I spent the next 6 months studying coding after hours, much to my wife and dog’s dismay - not only because I had less availability but because they were forced to look at all the things I had built, “See how I just made that text turn red!”

But eventually I did it! I got my first job as a real live web developer, making websites on the internet! Although even that wouldn’t quench my insatiable thirst for automation…

Shortly thereafter, during a chance encounter with my wife’s employer’s neighbour, I discovered the many gross inefficiencies lurking in the medical industry. This encounter led to me spearheading the development of a mobile app for one of South Africa’s largest hospital networks, Mediclinic, which they used to replace paper at hundreds of sporting events across the country, streamlining operations and saving the planet, #winning

My journey has been fuelled by a passion for automation and shaped by three guiding principles: simplicity, practicality and fun, that I have brought to every endeavour. Fast forward 8 years and many projects later, in the words of Pinocchio, I shout from the rooftops, “I’m a real boy!”

Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed my Geology puns

sakerbos··on Ask HN: How do you balance stress, productivity and mindfulness?
These are great tips thanks. I particularly like "Letting others be free" - it's such a healthy mindset.

Just curious, do you use any apps or tools to help stick with these habits, or is it more of a mental note thing for you? And how do you figure out if these practices are actually making a dent in your stress levels or boosting your productivity?

Thanks again!

sakerbos··on Canned food went from military rations to fancy appetizers
Totally agree! One of my favourite meals is pasta with sauce made from canned plum tomatoes, garlic, chilli, salt, pepper and basil. Also, canned San Marzano tomatoes for pizza sauce is the best I've ever had! Although I'd love to try the uncanned version one day.
sakerbos··on Why Is the Front End Stack So Complicated?
Vite fte. It has drastically simplified my development experience and it's crazy fast! I don't know why Next.js is considered the default for React development The dx is poor and idk if I'm missing something but I've found navigating through a Next.js app to be super slow, I mean seconds between page loads. I get that it has its use cases, ie. rendering static content like blogs and marketing pages but I've seen so many developers that use it for user-based data applications and that's just wrong imo.
sakerbos··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
Relying on an ad to convert a user is a big ask. Another approach could be to offer something high value to your target market in exchange for their email which you could then use to slowly raise awareness and convert users over a series of emails that offer even more value to them. That way you're greatly increasing the surface area of interactions with potential users while still genuinely helping them.
sakerbos··on Lead says async func in useCallback is incorrect, use useMemo instead, WTF?
Thanks! Yeah those were my thoughts too.
sakerbos··on Tremor – The React library to build dashboards fast
I've been using this while prototyping a few projects and absolutely loving it, the charts are beautiful! Just missing a few essential components like a dialog, toast/snackbar and notification banner but covers at least 80% of the components I need :)
sakerbos··on 'Breakthrough' geothermal tech produces 3.5 megawatts of carbon-free power
oh my frack
sakerbos··on Open source hospital price database
Yip, really grateful for it. I went into a public Queensland hospital recently and didn't pay a cent. Service was really good too!
sakerbos··on Show HN: Tremor 3.0 – Open-source library to build dashboards fast
I'm a big fan of Tremor! Initially used it for their next level AreaChart but now using everything I can because they're just really nicely designed. The tailwind integration is great too.
sakerbos··on Show HN: Automating daily reports, because fuck it
I've used something similar to create release notes, pretty handy, just make sure your commits contain enough emojis.
sakerbos··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
Sounds a lot like Africa, same same but different.
sakerbos··on The Untold Story of the Boldest Supply-Chain Hack Ever
I really enjoyed that article. I do love a good conspiracy theory and I found this piece particularly interesting:

"The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency wanted to know whether any research labs developing Covid vaccines had been hit."

Why were the Covid research labs of most concern to CISA as opposed to something like the presidential office?

sakerbos··on Shoot the arrow, then paint the target around it
Started reading this as it was vaguely intriguing but after a few sentences I was confronted by a "Enter your email to continue reading" dialog. It seems like the author has taken his own writing to heart. Unfortunately for the author, the arrow won't land again.
sakerbos··on Gezellig – a word that encompasses the heart of Dutch Culture
I would liken it to the word "lekker" in Afrikaans, e.g. "Nou Gaan ons lekker braai".
sakerbos··on Show HN: Get a Professional Headshot in Minutes with AI
It doesn't work on desktop too, Brave Browser. I got it to work turning shields off.
sakerbos··on Wells Fargo clients report missing deposits as bank works on fix
The timing of this and SVB going bang is a little sus... Or I'm just being paro waiting for the dominoes to start falling.
sakerbos··on Ask HN: What can't Deno do that Node can
I've been prototyping with Supabase recently and they use Deno for their functions. It's been a pain tbh, maybe I'm just too new to it (maybe it's Maybelline) but it's basically just a big, unnecessary abstraction imo.
sakerbos··on Someone reached me on Signal thinking I was ChatGPT, it had given them my number
Is it a possibility that Signal itself has exposed mobile numbers via a ChatGPT integration?
sakerbos··on Lost in the Stock
All of a sudden I have a newfound love for homemade stock. I guess I'm making some tomorrow. Recipe looks really good too!
sakerbos··on Extreme questions to trigger new, better ideas
“Brainstorming” is hard—staring at a blank whiteboard, wondering whether someone could make a real-life “dark mode” whiteboard, then realizing that’s what a blackboard is, only dustier - this cracked me up!
sakerbos··on Show HN: An investment forum where everyone manages a $1M imaginary portfolio
Sounds like fun!
sakerbos··on Angry Reviewer
This is great! As a Developer, I think this could be handy for PR/MR reviews too.
sakerbos··on Ask HN: Help me pick a front-end framework
If it were up to me, I'd go with the following (mostly based on the largest communities):

- Typescript

- React

- styled-components (I've heard good things about tailwindcss too)

- Jest and react-testing-library for testing

- prettier and eslint for linting

Just throwing it out there in case you'd like to share your code between web, desktop and mobile:

- Electron (desktop)

- React-Native (mobile)

- React-native-web (to bridge it all together)

sakerbos··on OctoPrint: Snappy web interface for your 3D printer
Damn and I've just sold my printer! This looks great, we'll done!
sakerbos··on Show HN: Parsnip – Duolingo for Cooking
After completing "Scrambled Eggs", I unlocked the recipe but after competing "Avocado Toast" the recipe was not unlocked and I'm not sure what to do to unlock it. What am I missing?
sakerbos··on Show HN: Parsnip – Duolingo for Cooking
Great thanks! Just to correct my copy and paste typo, "Which part of an upright blender with hot liquid in is most dangerous?" :)
sakerbos··on Show HN: Parsnip – Duolingo for Cooking
One thing that I'd like to suggest is to make the questions a bit less ambigious / more straight forward.

E.g. One of the questions is "Which part of an upright blender is the most dangerous?". My initial reaction was the blades but apparently the answer was steam. In this case, I'd suggest rephrasing the question to "Which part of an upright blender is the most dangerous with hot liquid in is most dangerous".

sakerbos··on Show HN: Parsnip – Duolingo for Cooking
I love this! Already completed the "Scrambled Eggs" series. I really enjoy cooking and this is a fun way to enhance my skills, thank you!
sakerbos··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
Read Four Hour Work Week. I love what I do, programming for a reasonably successful startup, but I'm much more excited by the idea of doing my own thing. A really inspiring and actionable book.
sakerbos··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
Interested to know how it changed your life?

My wife and I have been watching a show on Netflix called "How to Change your Mind" and have been contemplating trying either LSD, shrooms or ayahuasca (we're not really druggies, we're just really interested in living more connected and meaningful lives and it seems those substances really help in initiating the process).
