saiya-jin··on CERN aims to build €20B collider
Saw this, they do massive maintenance every 5 years and do tours in various underground parts.

First of all, I never saw any place better organized, not a smidge of dust, thousands of cables arranged perfectly. And then you get to collider/detector part which is this massive maybe 15m wide long cylinder, opened completely, and it looks like from sci-fi novels.

Just the scale and evident competence of building such a hyper complex unique thing... I live in Switzerland, pretty used to well organized stuff but this was next level.

saiya-jin··on CERN aims to build €20B collider
Well it all continues as per laws of physics just as we expect. No surprising effect on macro world.

Sure we can build more weapons, do social experiments that mostly fail and burn tens if not hundreds of billions with 0 or almost 0 returns, plenty of examples around. Heck, things like biofuels in EU have clearly negative overall impact yet we burned cash on it like there is no tomorrow.

This is not taking budget from other scientists who will have to play with rocks for next few decades, the whole article sounds like an envy of rather weird folks ("Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy" is really not the best places to ask such questions).

Overall, one of better uses of public money I've seen in past decade.

> Because of the extra radiation generated by the machine, it would need to sit twice as far underground as the Large Hadron Collider.

Since I live nearby, happy to see the proposed circle is mostly in France, relatively far from our place. Of course if some small black hole is created by accident it may not matter much.

I know these 'tricks', registered letter, filling out cantonal forms on official pages, went through that after first 2 months. Didn't help a bit, this was advanced shit.

Email response from filled cantonal online form came back after 3 months, with... 'wait'.

Till this day I believe this was an actual evil person getting kicks from this slow suffering of poor desperate foreigners who have absolutely 0 way of doing anything, even having decent polite conversation. And its hard to ignore the fact that suing an office which maybe will issue you most important papers in your life may not be the smartest course of action.

They say its roughly 1/20 sociopaths and 1/100 psychopaths in general population, not that hard to meet them if you are unlucky.

That may be true yet even smart folks affected ran to them like there is no tomorrow, long term consequences be damned, I need my notifications now !

Yeah, Suisse can be a bit weird - ultra modern stuff mixed with very conservative stuff from maybe 70s or 50s, not sure which century though.

I have a single proper horror story with otherwise flawless (yet nontrivial) Swiss bureaucracy - one of those situations where you are completely at the mercy of incompetent bureaucrat which couldn't care less, to allow just your basic existence in this country as a highly sought-after expat, since evidently solid past 12 years means nothing.

You see the process working on others within few weeks yet you are stuck there, without any info apart from 'wait', without any option to anyhow contact physical person handling your case, your main permit allowing your existence here expiring, yet the evidently lazy bureaucrat which sometimes picks up official phone for whole bureau doesn't bulge a bit, stating 'there is no time limit how long this could take, bye'. I tried naively to just go to the bureau but was literally kicked out of the building. Literally untouchable folks.

And then other bureaucrat by chance picks up a phone and takes a look after a year during one desperate final call, balks in horror and WTFs, goes on 5 minute tirade full of apologies (I guess I could sue Geneva canton for undue stress on me and whole family since that shit was real we could be easily forced out) promptly does everything in 5 minutes.

Yeah, using bad (phone) photo copies of IDs in 2024 is the least problem with Swiss bureaucracy for me here, there seems to be a lot of ingrained trust in the system (which is great when it works).

saiya-jin··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
Man, I want best quality too, I have all my music in FLACs even on my phone. But even on 75" from 4m I simply don't see the difference, so for me thats chasing numbers or similar.

And building and properly maintaining some not-so-small array of massive HDDs for those capacities... I just don't see the point when I can get all I need (and ie in sound much much more), without caring more than buying a single hdd and be done for next 5 years.

Its not the bandwidth, 1gbps is easy to get here, stuff I saw in those sizes was well seeded too, but just overall all added extra work.

saiya-jin··on A practical guide to quitting your smartphone
Wait till you see folks with fashion smartwatch being constantly immediately interrupted with all stupid notifications, its like advanced OCD factory for almost 0 added value. Then they turn it off, but usually this won't last, you can't brag about it so much and that 2s dopamine kick is missing.

Maybe some secret cabal of psychologists are actually behind it to raise their revenue.

saiya-jin··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
There are no 'regular viewing distances' anymore, any guidelines were long ago thrown out of window. Some want to have cinema at home, some want a tiny screen in kitchen or bedroom, some want (or can only afford) something in between.

Just do what works for you. But with lets say 'cinema experience' distance:size ratio you definitely can see the difference. I could clearly see it on Netflix 4k on tiny 55" 4k screen from maybe 2-2.5m.

But of course after 1-2 minutes it becomes meaningless difference and your brain blends it, what you should focus is not seeing big banding pixels due to low bad compression in very dynamic scenes.

saiya-jin··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
This is not correct, the bitrates are actually cca 2x that high. I don't have YIFY much, went for RARBG since they released literally everything I cared about and wanted a bit of uniformity, always with subs, bad releases got PROPER fix etc. But they both aimed at same file sizes.

X265 1080p movies for both rippers are roughly 1.5-2GB per average movie, which is on average 1.5-2h long. You won't find better quality in this size range, in same way 7-10GB seems a sweet spot for 4k (especially with AV1 instead of HEVC). Not sure who & why downloads those 80GB full bluray releases.

saiya-jin··on Netflix: Piracy is difficult to compete against and growing rapidly
Agree 100%, my tiny 10TB collection of literally everything I like in 1080p and selected (and actually available) 4k hdr stuff is enough.

Same for music for me, radios where I live are just tons of talk I don't care about and little (weird) music, so my rock & metal collection from usb key is enough.

If I ever want that randomness that comes with say radio I just let it on or use ad-infested youtube, and probably soon turn it off in disgust from adverts. With small kids, not much time for that anyway which is a good thing.

And all gained legally. I am not losing sleep for poor artists (those I listen/watch are fine, guys in their 40s-60s living in castles or big mansions), I am not type of person what bought 100s of CDs of DVDs before (just to feel like a complete idiot now).

saiya-jin··on Why buying tickets to a game has become so unaffordable
Because you seemingly never went to such a game looking forward to it, with bunch of friends, and just yelled and drank a lot of beers. Like going to pub but way more active.

I generally don't do it neither, but oh boy did you grow up in a plastic bubble? Such an experience is almost impossible to avoid literally anywhere in the world, and folks enjoy it tremendously.

saiya-jin··on Finance worker pays out $25M after video call call with deepfake CFO
You don't understand current banking as its happening right now, simple as that. Also, you probably didn't read article since it clearly states it was a 'secret' transaction, most probably meaning bypassing all controls put in place.

I mean we still right now live in the world where just a very rough match for signature on a piece of crappy paper is enough to move millions if needed.

saiya-jin··on Rolling Airframe Missile
Went for Phalanx article immediately too when I saw the link, I guess there is just something about that 20mm beast throwing massive tungsten slugs at even crazier speeds that no missile can compete with (for attracting readers).

These things require super quick reactions, operator is optional (and thats why no real usage in combat, USN ends up turning it off often in situations where they don't want to risk absolutely destructive friendly fire.

Now if everything will be eventually 'ai'-infused, well, fuck. Navy apparently doesn't trust automation with their lives much, and fancier neural network with unpredictable decision paths ain't gonna improve things.

saiya-jin··on Rolling Airframe Missile
newer versions have 4 fins... better read the actual article, pretty good stuff there
saiya-jin··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
What you call 'American pizza' is basically just Italian focaccia with just more stuff on top, with very thick bland crust. Literally nobody in Europe eats pizza in such a form, not in restaurants at least, and for Italians living in Italy that would be a proper insult. Then in my experience there is simply too much on top of it, especially too much cheese, so 1/2 of US pizza is way more filling and has tons of calories compared to full one down here.

I am not commenting on taste which may end up more than fine, just looks. But that thick crust adds tons of empty sugar calories to the food that originally doesn't have so much.

saiya-jin··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
Which begs the question - what not-yet-in-the-spotlight chemical crap makes this happen? Since ingredients are the same, devices are the same yet they last longer as you mention.

Maybe something about vastly different food quality standards between the sides of the pond.

saiya-jin··on The Burial of William the Conqueror: A Comedy of Errors
Almost as if, morality is something ingrained in every human being in some way, maybe as some higher rules of overall fairness. And fairness is something I can see in our small kids, they didn't have to be taught that.

Or maybe medieval catholicism with their rather primitive views and morals would instill proper fear in everybody. Which was then often overcome ie by greed or envy, but never could go completely away.

saiya-jin··on Testing how hard it is to cheat with ChatGPT in interviews
Yes basically when interviewing you should be looking for warning signs. CV is as it is, you can't cover any bigger one extensively in that short time, so you poke randomly and go deep.

There is no bigger warning sign than outright lying. A normal mature person would ask just before if AI is allowed.

saiya-jin··on Getting fitter can reduce prostate cancer risk by 35%, study finds
Yes it does, definitely for me, depending on the route. But I have great imagination, my internal renderer can project a new house construction in 2 seconds but can also in 0.1s project gnarly consequences of the fall right here right now. With experience you get better but I've never lost it, just became better at managing it (this is the growth part I mentioned).

Indoor routes are generally very safe due to frequent bolts, outdoor it depends, with bolts easily 4-5m apart, not so much. I still talk purely about sport climbing with drilled bolts, not trad climbing where you put expansion devices into cracks yourself or wedge tiny metal bits and pray intensely you won't actually fall on them.

I don't want to go into detailed climbing & fall physics but if in such a route you fall just before next bolt (or during an attempt to clip into it), you can easily swing up to 8m down, hit a ledge, part of rock with serious force, or just be smashed against rock face hard (if you are in overhang then all is fine obviously, just belayer will fly hard). Broken/twisted ankles, wrists etc are not that uncommon in such situation, or worse depending on position, usage of helmet etc.

For most folks who are longer in sport, it is by far the best activity that can be done. I do in some form: hiking/camping in wilderness, swimming, biking, paragliding, climbing, via ferratas, alpinism, diving, skiing, ski touring/alpinism and few other things, on top just training with weights and running. Kids cut it significantly but I am still there.

Climbing in non-winter conditions (or indoor) and ski touring are by far the best things for me. I come happy like a toddler after a session / trip on skis. I just don't get this from typical old school team sports, or even single/duo ones.

The biggest thing isn't the physical effort part, not for me. Its exposition to your fear of death, fear of injury which are very strong emotions. You have to repeatedly overcome your biggest fear in whole life and push through, maybe 10x maybe 50x per evening. Do it for 1 or 2 decades at least 1x a week and your personality will change for the better. Also helps with various milder mental issues, not fixing them but improving (this can be said about every sport but its way more intense here).

There are other sports where you expose yourself to similar fears, but in climbing its very easy in afterwork session, without the actual risk (valid for sport climbing).

saiya-jin··on Getting fitter can reduce prostate cancer risk by 35%, study finds
That grip strength falls apart when you meet climbers. I know we are outliers in general population but it overall seems like a poor measure with tons of corner cases which invalidate it.

Older marathon runner can have a baby pinch due to not using his/her hands for any sport, yet somehow I doubt they fall into same category as some morbidly obese 250kg ball of fat who didn't move from the bed in past few years.

My wife is a doctor, most of of our friends have at least one, often both as doctors. Most of them are living healthily, but that may be also due to location - Geneva, Switzerland which has strong French influence. Meaning good high quality food is default, portions smaller than US, tons of physical exercise is a default here, we have beautiful nature and mountains at our doorsteps so that helps. My banking IT colleagues fall into exactly same category.

But then there are the rest, which have various issues like eating crap, overweight, no sports etc. Yet they know fully darn well where it leads to. Either they make some mental bypass like smokers 'it won't happen to me', or they are at peace and enjoy themselves.

Proper knowledge of consequences is not enough to persuade everybody, regardless of their IQ. Also, even healthily folks that are say anxious go sometimes on regretful binging spree when things get tougher.

saiya-jin··on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not
There is always an idea what one needs, the idea itself is perfect, flawless. Then there is reality. Those never meet, good luck with getting them at least close
saiya-jin··on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not
Its not comparable. At that time, phone was already a necessity for most folks and most had one. VR (they are not AR from outside)? Still 90% of folks around me (doctors, IT, rest of reality) think whole concept of VR/AR is for kids and... big old kids lets say.

Also it costs 10x as much with huge drawback above. Inflation makes this a smaller number but the difference is still massive, for a plastic toy soon to be obsolete looking like kids ski googles.

But if they persist, which all reviews seem to hang their overall positive rating on, magic we all hope for might eventually happen

saiya-jin··on Google Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2023 Results [pdf]
Well, if total average costs per employee for G would be very roughly 1 million, there you have it. I think it may be half of that if at all, but it impacts the increased revenue significantly in any case.
saiya-jin··on How to do things if you're not that smart and don't have any talent
99% of IT problems in the world doesn't require brilliance in any way, just consistency and effort put in.

Anytime some good junior tries to put the brilliance into place it doesn't require it, its a sad story about literal technical debt down the line.

But good luck explaining this to most smart folks who are running around with big hammer trying as much new stuff as possible.

Neither China nor Russia are communist countries for very long time. Folks here with more experience can describe better than me what actual regime there is, to me it seems like some mixture of brutal capitalism and regulated markets, dictatorship of the elite, all drowning in corruption. What labels they put themselves on doesn't really matter, does it.
