sagarkamat··on xAI joins SpaceX
Does this mean the foreign software engineers in xAI are now subject to ITAR?
sagarkamat··on Workday suffered a data breach
Great! Can all companies please put this data in their own databases so we don't need to fill the same data for every single company please??
sagarkamat··on Anker is recalling over 1.1M power banks due to fire and burn risks
FWIW, yes i was able to submit a claim. Did get a confirmation screen saying claim submitted but no email confirmation yet.
sagarkamat··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
This is the wrong comparison though. Merchants offer bulk discount to incentivize customers to buy more units of whatever they’re selling. I can’t buy more than one seat on the plane of its just me traveling. I can’t utilize the ‘bulk discount’ if I’m not traveling with anyone
sagarkamat··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
Meh, all stock deal. They are not spending any raised cash on this.
sagarkamat··on Material 3 Expressive
Thank you for the detailed reply. Great insight
sagarkamat··on I Fought the IRS for Over $12K and won
But they could absolutely move to a system where the vast majority of filers could attest that the numbers IRS already has are all the income they have and be done with their returns. Then only the subset that has other income or adjustments would need to do a more involved filing.
sagarkamat··on Detroit’s revival takes shape after decades of decay
I'd say don't give up on Ann Arbor yet. It's a great place to live in and there are plenty of jobs in a commutable distance within Metro Detroit.
sagarkamat··on Google is making AI in Gmail and Docs free, but raising the price of Workspace
I used Gemini to do a similar task and for whatever reason, i found it performed better when i broke down the task into individual steps.
sagarkamat··on Permira completes Squarespace acquisition after upping bid to $7.2B
I guess they can make a heck of a lot just by cutting the podcast sponsorships.
sagarkamat··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
>Finally, I want to call out the phenomenon in the world of VC where the ability to generate hype alone is enough to make you and your investors a lot of money, even if there isn't a lot of substance in your company (and even if things are morally or ethically questionable), through the mechanism of greater fools.

Amen brother. VCs and the Valley elite think the society at large has turned on them, without introspecting on how VCs seem to reward bad behavior and grift.

sagarkamat··on United Airlines CEO says the airline will consider alternatives to Boeing
Does it matter though that the numbers are because of PRC tipping the scales? It worked for chinese internet and auto companies. Also, chinese manufacturing is obviously capable of high standards of manufacturing if they decide to. People forget how tenuous airbus once looked or how fast they scaled up
sagarkamat··on United Airlines CEO says the airline will consider alternatives to Boeing
Chinese COMAC seems to be on the verge of selling meaningful numbers to chinese airlines. Wont be surprised if they are a very viable competitor in ~20 years which isn’t much in the aviation world where backlogs span a decade
sagarkamat··on Discord is laying off 17 percent of employees
Can someone answer this question for me? By now, a ton of companies have done layoffs explaining that they overhired during COVID. These hires had to have come from somewhere, presumably other industries. What happened to those industries? Do they not want workers back? Did those jobs go away? Or do people just not want to go back to them?
sagarkamat··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
But there are usually 25 days between when a statement is generated and an Autopay is deducted for that statement. Just have your checkup of the statement scheduled between those 25 days
sagarkamat··on Aardvark'd: The Fog Creek documentary, 18 years later
I remember watching this documentary a few years ago and thinking

1) this concept had so much promise but man they could have made this docu better

2) those are some famous names before they became famous

3) we need more such docus that capture forever the daily office life at a particular point in time

sagarkamat··on Twitter Rebranding: Online Auction, Memorabilia, Art and More
Crazy how much overpriced furniture companies will buy even as they are piling on losses
sagarkamat··on Akin’s Laws of Spacecraft Design
SpaceX is literally US's only domestic way to send humans to ISS right now
sagarkamat··on [dead]
A bit old but I can't believe I can't find a post about this on Hackernews. Wistia paid Sandwich Video to make a $1000 ad, a $10000 ad and a $100K ad, and then made a very informative documentary about the whole thing.
sagarkamat··on The design thinking movement is absurd (2018)
Its funny to see this phenomenon repeat itself again and again in corporate America. Company X manages to become successful due to bunch of amorphous reasons. Some academic decides to reverse-engineer this messy process into a neatly packaged theory that has some kernal of obviousness at the heart of it. Then the academia-consultant-management complex takes it over and starts evangelizing it for $$ to companies and contexts that are only tangentially similar to the original company. Obviously the cut-paste theory fails to take hold in its new home. Rinse repeat till a new fad comes in. Lean, Agile, Design thinking...
sagarkamat··on US Citizens Will Need Visa to Travel to Europe in 2024
Can you share a source to any of these statistics you refer to that the modern rules are based on?
sagarkamat··on US Citizens Will Need Visa to Travel to Europe in 2024
<If circumstances change due to events out of your control, then there are solutions for that.> There literally are no good solutions to that. I went through the whole rigmarole of getting a schengen visa for a specific week and then had to postpone my trip by a week due to change in business plans. The 'solution' was to get a second schengen visa for that second week, by submitting the same documents again and paying the same fee again. Which involves showing up at a consulate in-person. Which are not in every city. (source: https://manila.diplo.de/ph-en/service/visa/faq-gq-change-vis...)

Literally nothing would be different if they decided to grant you the visa for the duration you asked for but allowed you the flexibility to make that trip within a time window. You would still ensure I'm in EU for a limited time, but allowed some flexibility.

Secondly, none of the measures like asking me to show booked hotels or booked flights actually ensures I wont be overstaying. I could very well show you all of those and overstay if i wanted to do so illegally. All it does is forces people to shell out of a bunch of money even before they can be sure I'll be granted the visa.

sagarkamat··on US Citizens Will Need Visa to Travel to Europe in 2024
EU really needs to re-do the whole Schengen process for citizens of countries like India. Right now, you need to show booked tickets, hotel reservations, Insurance with very specific terms and a detailed itinerary even before you've been granted the visa. And after all that documentation nightmare, you get granted the visa for the exact specific dates you've requested. God forbid your plans change even by a day or two.

By contrast, the Travel Visa to US, while also a painful process, at least grants you multiple entry visa thats valid for 10 years.

sagarkamat··on The Office Design Strategies of Amazon, Samsung, Adobe and Others [video]
The video seemed to cover the opinions of the architecture firms, consultants and executives behind these office designs, but not the employees. Employees who actually work in these offices, what has your experience been like?
sagarkamat··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
Not sure about other OEMs but at least Ford's CEO has clarified Ford customers will be able to use the FordPass app to use the tesla chargers.
sagarkamat··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Interesting that this page does not list Blogger. Confirmed deathwatch then?
sagarkamat··on Buy well, buy once
My relationship to stuff is at a weird point. I've watched a bit too many documentaries about impact of overproduction on our world to a level where I tend to over analyze and over scrutinize every purchase, probably to unhealthy levels. I tend to use objects i have to the point they become unusable, trying to get their full worth.

But at the same time, I've realized that buying the best of everything every time is not the best way to go. Sometimes your taste changes but the object still is in a great condition with no other takers. So you're stuck with something you don't like anymore.

A good compromise seems to be buying the cheap version of everything the first time around. That way if you don't use it as much, you haven't spent a lot of money on it. And if you do it use it, the cheap stuff will wear out sooner and you can replace it with better made stuff.

sagarkamat··on A Leaked Tesla Report Shows the Cybertruck Had Basic Design Flaws
Frankly, this is one of those articles, where if you know anything about the subject matter being written, you realize its a nothing-burger. Every car in development produces decks that look like this, with a long list of issues, that are eventually reesolved. But i guess the narrative gets the clicks.
sagarkamat··on Lyft to Cut at Least 1,200 Jobs in New Round of Layoffs to Reduce Costs
Lyft actually did try and create many different revenue streams. Besides ridesharing, they own the bikeshares and scooters in pretty much every major city in US, got into their own car rental business and tried to become a one stop shop for transit. It's not that they didn't try, its that they didn't seem to have taken any of them to be profitable revenue streams.

Also, wouldn't the very high salaries paid to a lot of engineers contribute it Lyft having unsustainable economics?

sagarkamat··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Agree on most of this but Keychain Access IS a standalone app on the mac so slightly confused about the comment about it being buried in System settings. Its still a pain to go to the app and copy a password for non-Safari browsers though.
