saddestcatever··on LAN Party game caching made easy
Sounds like fun!

Dropbox also has LAN sync if you're all on the same "team" account. Works wonders between local computers.

I love seeing targeted solutions like the one posted by OP, but I can't shake the feeling that the application of distribution game files is only the surface of it's applicability.

saddestcatever··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
There's a certain irony that the primary feature separating smart phone cameras and traditional cameras is the ability to purposefully make "blurry photographs".
saddestcatever··on How to Get into Tabletop RPGs
Recommendation: Start with the story and narrative elements. You can abstract away all the rules, and math as need be, and re-introduce them over time.

What are your thoughts on Dungeon World (PbtA)? For rules-lite, classic D&D-themes, and easy for newbies, I've found it to be a good choice for my group.
saddestcatever··on How to Get into Tabletop RPGs
Coming from a long background in D&D 3.5/5e/etc TTRPGs, Dungeon World and thus the PbtA systems feel like a breath of fresh air! Especially for a rules-lite, narrative-first game.

However, I will admit... The actual Dungeon World book is pretty bad. Great rules, great player sheets / printables, rather poor book as TTRPG books go.

saddestcatever··on Mundane chores are all the rage in gaming
If you haven't read Ender's Game, I highly recommend it based on this topic.

I think the tricky part is - if it's an unsolved problem, how does the game know when a task is complete? Feedback loops are a core element of game design, and part of the reason tedious tasks can be satisfying, but unless it's directly manual labor, I'm unsure how to create a proper feedback loop

saddestcatever··on Turo Requires a Driver's License Number and Credit Card to Show Full Price
It's an interesting dark pattern...

I understand when products are compared directly: Uber vs. Lyft, Uber Eats vs. Grubhub, etc. Often consumers are looking at the exact same product and purely deciding based on price. I can see what a company would add that dark pattern to squeeze every dollar they can get.

AirBnb, Turo? I don't get it, are folks comparing the purchases directly to "other" products?

saddestcatever··on FTC sues Intuit for its deceptive TurboTax “free” filing campaign
True! Great point that there are very, very many other ways that they are "compensated" besides direct $$$ donations. Thank you for noting that.

IMO: The mind blowing element, is that in the grand scheme of things It's not actually that much money.

I'm not sure if anyone knows the true amount, but estimates put the number spent on lobbying around a few million dollars. Opensecrets.org estimated ~$3.2m lobbying in 2021.

https://www.opensecrets.org/federal-lobbying/clients/summary...

For a company that makes $2 BILLION dollars a year, the amount they actually spend lobbying and otherwise influencing governments is shockingly small.

Do you have a better site or resource you now go to for queries like can opener opinions?

Yes, Reddit isn't perfect, but I've been hard pressed to find better options.

saddestcatever··on The Factorio Mindset
Shoutout to Satisfactory. I've seen many players that resonate with Dyson Sphere Program also enjoy Satisfactory. Not quite as in-depth as Factorio, but an amazingly, amazingly well designed game in both over experience and gameplay.
saddestcatever··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
Bummer.

I used to be a huge advocate for 1Password.

Purchased a single license for $60 back in the day. Backed up my vault to Dropbox.

For a few years, it was the best app I've ever bought.

Now with the upgrade to monthly subscription, my Windows machine is stuck on a crappy legacy version of the app. I get that every company and their mother wants that $A$$ money, but I truly miss the simplicity.

saddestcatever··on Free Returns Are Complicated, Laborious, and Gross
I'm not sure on the exist economics, but much of the "cost" of a return ends up being passed to the seller, so it's much easier for Amazon to green light returns much more loosely.
saddestcatever··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
On average, I imagine it's low. However, anecdotally the gamers I know who are buying $1000+ cards, generally do so every 2 years with the intent to flip them and buy the newest hottest card.

In a similar train of thought - there might be better data on this question if one was to look at the photography equipment market. Or other used consumer markets with high re-sale value.

saddestcatever··on Don't make customers hunt for the Sign In button on your website
> Why do companies like Twilio make me put my email in first and hit the arrow before i can even type in my password?

Because of lazy UX implementations of SSO.

You'll see logins like Google, where this is common. If you submit an email that has an SSO authentication associated with it, they can redirect you to the right auth form.

However, for everyone that's not an SSO login this is a worse experience.

saddestcatever··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
Seriously! It's a shame that Xfire became a thing of the past. I feel like Steam baked in enough of the "community" features to steal their lunch, without ever delivering on the full community element that Discord is thriving on!
saddestcatever··on Download the FCC Speed Test App
Consequences.

The consequences for being a bad-actor are generally worse for a private individual or private organization.

Organizations have reputation concerns, individuals have legal and personal concerns.

The gov't? Not so much. The NSA, institutionalized spying, slow transition to a police-state... I don't get the feeling that these are much cause for reputational concern at the federal level.

saddestcatever··on Photos and Video Taken Inside Illegal Click Farms (2018)
True. I think the economics of how cheap smartphones have gotten is shocking.

Especially since you can acquire "barely working" phones. Broken camera? Not a problem. Broken audio jack? No worries. Cracked screen? Meh. No battery life? Doesn't matter one bit.

I imagine it's pretty easy to acquire hundreds of barely working phone for cheap if you don't care about using them as a traditional mobile device.

Wouldn't it be similar to corporate tax?

Tax profits, so that any existing donations would be tax deductible?

Navneet, as someone looking to buy a solution such as yours, the website isn't answering my #1 question:

> Does coefficient.io work with MY system?

What databases can you connect to?

saddestcatever··on Changes to LastPass Free
Well, not really "free", you've just already paid for it.
saddestcatever··on Smash Training Retrospective
Hand injuries are no joke! I'm glad prominent players like Armada and Hax have been so vocal about taking them seriously.
saddestcatever··on AirPods Max
I really do like my QC35's, but I agree the primary issues are:

- I can have 2 connected sources of audio (ex: phone/laptop). However, only one works at a time. So when I get a spam phone call, I loose audio for my ongoing video call until I decline the ring. - I can't use wireless without turning on noise cancelling. This means, I can't really walk around and use them at the same time

saddestcatever··on Players Blame Skill-Based Matchmaking for Losing in Call of Duty
I've always wanted a metric for how well talent correlates to victory in a given game.

For me, Super Smash Brothers Melee is a great example. Let's say I'm rank 1,000 in my city, and I play someone rank 250. I expect to loose 99% of those games.

I can't say the same thing is true for Call of Duty. It may be perception bias, but I think there's a LOT more variance between skill and victory. What's the breakdown of expected to actual performance? Would it be a 90% win rate, etc?

saddestcatever··on Players Blame Skill-Based Matchmaking for Losing in Call of Duty
I can't seem to find the link, but one of the BEST resources for learning how to play Rocket League at a higher level was a Youtuber who streaming his smurf leveling up through ranked, and explaining strategies and mistakes through the process.
saddestcatever··on Players Blame Skill-Based Matchmaking for Losing in Call of Duty
> matches you with a bunch of players who are far worse than you for a game or two. Then, it matches you with a bunch of players who are far better than you for a game or two

What are the chances this is an 'engagement' hack?

I wonder if players are more likely to continue playing if they have ups and downs.

In a perfect matchmaking system, would players get bored?

I have to wonder if this is intentional, or just the side effect of either perception or an imperfect system.

saddestcatever··on Grinch Bots Will Steal the Best Deals This Holiday Season
True! Though, you're opening up a nightmare for your Customer Success/Support teams. What happens when someone can no longer attend their event? Option 1: Give ticket to a friend, Option 2: Refund the ticket.

If you're looking at Option #2, then you'll need to provide a secondary marketplace for selling off all the last minute tickets that get dumped back into the marketplace.

It totally could... if everyone was willing to forgo sitting up for the duration of the flight.
