sacnoradhq··on Mammals’ time on Earth is half over, scientists predict
Yep. The extreme far future (i.e., tectonics, magnetic field weakening, the moon receding, liquid water loss, GRBs, GCRs, and the expanding sun) is inconsequential compared to the existential threat of the anthropogenic global warming emergency now.
sacnoradhq··on Mammals’ time on Earth is half over, scientists predict
We're presently headed to a desert Earth with nothing bigger or more complex than a gecko roaming endless sand within 1000 years. Before that, hypercanes will flatten whole regions. We've already reached 38 C SST this year. Give it 20-25 years and some regions will be unlivable using conventional A-frame above-ground construction.

While fun guys always roam, I don't see pizza toppings roaming except as ant parasites.

Surface liquid water won't exist in a billion years either.

That far in the future, it doesn't really matter because there's little to be done about it except evolve or be somewhere else.

sacnoradhq··on It’s not the drone strikes that are hurting Moscow, it’s the traffic jams
M57 and M57E1 ATACMS only has a range of about 300 km, while Moscow is 50% further at 430-460 km. Ukraine would need serious SRBMs to hit enough Russian strategic targets. Domestic Hrіm-2 is possibly operational and in manufacture in limited quantities. If I were part of the Ukrainian military brass, I would volunteer fielding experimental systems in development like PrSM.

George Shultz and Gorbachev are correct: one dangerous turn in world policy has been the rollback of the INF treaty and tit-for-tat brinksmanship.

sacnoradhq··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
The problem is the wrong kinds of regulation by regulatory capture by the NIMBYs and the very rich. The mainstream is a Ponzi scheme where most of the value created by workers goes to feed a tiny, vampiric rent-seeking class in exchange for crumbs.

Ozempic is a lower dose of semaglutide for type-2 diabetes only. The higher maintenance dose (2.4 mg) marketed as Wegovy is for weight loss.

A weight loss oral medication will be available within a year or so, and it will dramatically reduce manufacturing costs. (The autoinjectors are very well designed and nearly painless, but they're very expensive and the whole thing is disposable.) It will still probably require a cold chain. Rybelsus is already available for diabetes but it isn't approved for weight loss in 3 7, and 14 mg doses. Novo Nordisk will likely issue an 50 mg per day for maintenance dose.

IANAD: If one can, they should first try to limit portion size because the risk of thyroid cancers with long-term semaglutide use is unknown and nonzero. There's a real possibility of another Vioxx/Fen-Phen moment.

That's irrational and imaginary. Oh, and the cardinals will win the series.
sacnoradhq··on F-35A has flown from a highway for the first time
It's primary for forward tactical, war-time refueling because you can't just drive a jet from a hardened bunker on an air base to a random road far away. Wingspan and trees and such get in the way. Finland, Poland, etc. roads fit the criteria where it makes sense to have emergency alternate landing sites than first-to-be-destroyed fixed bases.

An adversary such as Russia undoubtedly already designates straight, manicured roads in Eastern Europe for anti-runway demolition as secondary targets.

Also, given Russia's hypersonic capabilities, they undoubtedly possess something between JP233 and DRDO SAAW: stand-off anti-runway and hardened target attack with area denial.

sacnoradhq··on The United States of Bed Bath & Beyond
The perils of under-regulation, of regulatory capture, and the naivete of individual day-traders. There are no incentives to increase regulation, but there are incentives and inducements to look the other way and to par back the regulatory environment even further. Hell, one of LTCM is even getting airplay these days and saying how they really only made a tiny, correctable mistake but that they were completely right otherwise.
sacnoradhq··on PostScript’s sudden death in Sonoma
The enshitification of "progress" marches on under unquestioned faith that "newer is always better". And someone got impact credit on their next performance review for taking away functionality. Plus, Apple never listens to users.. they know it all and know better.
sacnoradhq··on PostScript’s sudden death in Sonoma
Until support is removed for the crime of being "too old".

Digital archival support rot marches on and formats will die for lack documentation and usable converters.

Those bastards! What ever will I do with my HP LaserJet 4 PostScript cartridge? It was perfectly usable!

For reference, PS support for Preview was removed in Ventura.
sacnoradhq··on I’m a climate scientist and I think society will collapse by 2050. I’m preparing
Mad Max, zombie apocalypse prognostications are generally dismissed as chicken little paranoia for good reason. Unfortunately, the speaker automatically loses credibility and doesn't accomplish anything useful. The smart play would be to be quiet, bide your time, and be prepared like a Boy Scout. I seriously doubt anyone saying civilization will ever disappear because there are too many incentives and advantages of division of labor and trading, but life for most common people will gradually become rougher, harsher, more expensive, and increasingly upheaved by temporary disasters. Periodic famines and long-term food costs will sneak up over time are more likely.

If someone wanted to invest in OTG self-sufficiency, then they would need a remote, defensible homestead with wind and storm resistant agriculture and a durable water source. It's a waste of time and money unless someone enjoys the catharsis of microfarming and already has plenty of money.

sacnoradhq··on California woman loses limbs after battling bacterial infection from tilapia
The issues are manyfold.

Farmed fish, including salmon, and other seafood can contain nematodes that aren't killed by freezing in residential freezers. Your best bet is to source seafood from a reputable market, know where it comes from, and that it's sustainable. Wild caught is usually best, with lower parasite levels.

sacnoradhq··on Breakfast cereal is in long-term decline
Well, good. Wheaties was intentionally marketed refined flour and sugar to children and adopted sales tactics of big tobacco such as cartoon characters/mascots. Thus began the march towards ultra-processed foods and obesity.
sacnoradhq··on Carrefour puts ‘shrinkflation’ price warnings on food to shame brands
Hilarious. Consumer Reports used to track this as well by putting the previous and current products side-by-side.
sacnoradhq··on Mark Cuban loses $870K in hot wallet hack
I don't understand storing crypto in an online wallets or exchange. To me, it's the equivalent of keeping gold bricks in your car in a public parking lot. Exchanges and online mixing/wallet points should only be used for ephemerally for transactions.

Generate your own wallet and keep it completely offline.

sacnoradhq··on Masked 'boot girls' are freeing booted cars in Atlanta
Yeah. If it's going to be a Robin Hood thing, charging money is sure to invite a visit to the Fulton County Jail. Free = cool. Charging money = criminal enterprise, where Georgia has liberal RICO statutes.
sacnoradhq··on Masked 'boot girls' are freeing booted cars in Atlanta
Lol. You'll be mugged for the drill before you make a dent in it. An angle grinder will slice through it like warm butter. That's what those damn bicycle thieves use.

Nothing canned air and a mini sledge can't fix.
sacnoradhq··on Homeland Security Uses AI Tool to Analyze Social Media of Citizens and Refugees
Either one of the TLAs (FBI, CIA, or NSA) or a third-party company monitors the social media of security researchers associated with some big name firms. The reason I know this is a buddy said they were out at some DEF CON party and taking pictures with people. Just after the event, they got a call from their boss that they, in turn, got a call from their boss who got a call from some government-affiliate that the person they took a picture with was a "bad dude" and it would be wise to not associate with them. It sounds like a made-up conspiracy theory/paranoia shit, but it sounded truthful by someone who wasn't in the business of making shit up. My impression was it's creepy and promotes chilling effects on meeting people for fear of harming one's employment.
sacnoradhq··on A Senior Engineer's Check-List (2019)
> 8. Do not be adamant about your views.

I worked at a MAANG where this was not the case. The pecking order of "seniority" was who was the most "right" and who could poke the most holes in everyone else's ideas while denying others' contributions while bragging about how essential and important their work was in a semi-agro manner that discouraged dissent and curiosity.

In my view, marks of intelligence include lacking strong biases, comfort with ambiguity, be willing to propose hypotheses, experiment, gather data, and be proven wrong.

sacnoradhq··on A Texas semiconductor boom on the horizon?
Disclaimer: Austinite here unrelated to UT.

UT needs a wider incubation, financing, and entrepreneurial (undergrad/grad-student/community) ecosystem like Stanford. Critical mass of players brings with it more interested parties, and with it, that elusive "innovation". It should be okay to make money, okay to turn a PhD thesis into a startup, okay to launch side projects, and cool to fail and learn lessons. Not all paths must lead to a "corporate career".
