s-lambert··on The complicated reality of doing what you love
I don't see how it's a relatively recent development, social animals have leisure time where they just play around and "live" in the same way humans do. If anything the idea that life is just survival seems to be an invented concept forced on people.
s-lambert··on Ask HN: I joined a FAANG and it is awful
You should feel hopeless, you're doomed to having a steady career where you are paid well.
s-lambert··on Google Co-Founder Larry Page Allowed into New Zealand Despite Closed Border
If New Zealand is like Australia, I wouldn't say it's only for the rich ones but you do need to be middle class because the flight costs + hotel costs are obscene. But you don't need to be a millionaire or a celebrity or anything like that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_drinking_age

Most places restrict the age at which you can buy alcohol and most places seem to restrict it to at least 18. 21 is higher than the average but legal age laws seem to be pretty standard.

s-lambert··on The NFT market bubble has popped?
In cases like Venezuala, what's the long-term goal of holding crpyto though? That the country somehow collapses and is rebuilt with a normally inflationary currency with a less restrictive government? Or is the idea that you build up savings to eventually leave the country?

It doesn't really seem like a long-term solution or one that'd help more than a small amount of people.

s-lambert··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
You still need to eat soylent and chugging it down is unpleasant at best.

>no more 360 degree reviews (no way to formally give feedback to your boss)

The reason they gave for removing these was that peer reviews were overly positive to the point of pointlessness. You could still give feedback to your boss without 360 degree reviews.

s-lambert··on Fuckin' user interface design, I swear
Teams has updated their UI, it's always shown on the top right of calls now, so at least they realised their mistake.
s-lambert··on Travis CI is no longer providing CI minutes for open source projects
If a company pays you to help maintain X then you can't use JetBrains but if your company lets you work on open source software, but not anything specific, during work hours then maybe you can still use it?
s-lambert··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
> 1 - a high school education in the US no longer results in someone functionally prepared for citizenship (manage a budget, understand how to vote, keep themselves fed and clothed, understand a newspaper etc).

Besides understanding a newspaper, which arguably schools do teach since they teach you to read and do analysis on text in English classes, did high school education ever cover the rest of this?

> The sellers cannot really move their 'brand' from one market to another. An opportunist could reserve their username on another market, and users know that anyone could be behind that new account. They don't trust the name, only the reviews you have on your particular market.

Sellers can move their brand across markets with a different username because they would still have the same PGP key. There's even a search engine to find the same vendor on multiple markets by looking them up by their PGP key.

s-lambert··on Moving from TypeScript to Rust / WebAssembly
Dog and Person are structurally the same so you can assign a person to a dog and vice versa. But that's just how structural typing works and as a user of TypeScript I haven't run into a case where this'd be an issue.
