ryanobjc··on Nearly 200M in U.S. under heat advisories, warnings as two heat domes form
I think the go comment is kinda of like the infamous slash dot review of the iPod: “I don’t think heat deaths will be a thing in the next decade” - uh huh
ryanobjc··on Tether minted most USDT to just 2 firms – Alameda and Cumberland
Did you know that if you don’t do your transaction by 1pm pacific time you can no longer do business in the us?

Fed wires are only available 8-4 weekdays. Us wires are not very liquid.

Compare contrast with usdt and it’s instant settlement 24/7. So yeah the exchanges prefer it vs tradfi.

Gift cards are unregulated banks then?

The difference is banks have fractional reserve banking and stable coins do not.

ryanobjc··on YouTube suspends Rand Paul for seven days
Most of the people spouting off about "dont trust the experts" seemingly their process is to watch whatever youtube videos that confirm their preset opinion and then slam dunk their confirmation bias as if they are world class researchers.

As to the validity of masking and social distancing: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/03/02/children-fl... "The flu killed nearly 200 children last season. This time, 1 has died."

The notion that masks "might capture [exhaled] droplets" has a ton of circumstantial evidence behind it, and also as you note is a low cost low risk intervention. Which is why for those who are willing to wear masks, the use or lack of use of masks becomes a kind of proxy answer to the question "sooo... do you care about other people?" because as you note, they protect other people primarily.

Also, to categorize 'masks protect the wearer' as "misinformation", is a bit of a category stretch I think. "Vaccines are more harmful than covid" is misinformation, whereas "masks reduce the risk of spreading and catching covid" is.... not really in the same category as the former statement.

ryanobjc··on Imperfect Vaccination Can Enhance the Transmission of Highly Virulent Pathogens (2015)
I’m a bit concerned as to what it really says that this is front over material on hn.

The short of it, is suspect a substantial sub population here are holding a variety of opinions that ultimately result in vaccine reluctantance. While the numbers aren’t so fast as to be significant to public health, I do think it forms a sort of idea laundering or affirmation by social proof. In other words people are using the reputation of hacker news for having smart people to launder and promote anti vax.

ryanobjc··on Climate change: New report will highlight 'stark reality' of warming
Waiting for the “climate change isn’t an exact science” apologists to pop up. I’m surprised I’m the first commenter so far.

Once you’ve become attuned to the air quality and pm2.5 levels you realize how much more healthy of a world we could be if only we stopped burning things. Even in Sam Francisco which benefits from coastal breeze the air quality sinks.

And to think we could have been making serious attempts to fix all this. And spur on one of the greatest building economies ever. But hey. Why do anything?

ryanobjc··on Does the Tuskegee experiment explain black vaccination rates?
I mean come on dude, which world were you living in the last 18 months?

Trump and the GOP have heavily pushed covid into the political sphere. The right wing has worked relentlessly to frame the pandemic in the most political frame possible.

To try to pull some kind of 'well its really all sides' or 'all politicians <whatever>' that is doing a disservice to the truth of history.

There's a major difference between 'not wanting to cause a panic' and the total lies and abdication that characterize the early messages out of the Trump admin - think circa Feb/March 2020.

ryanobjc··on Employee shortages: Where have all the workers gone?
Are you sure?

Those states that cut people off unemployment didn’t see a boost in employment rates. Sooo now what?

ryanobjc··on Tether executives said to face criminal probe into bank fraud

ryanobjc··on Kubernetes is our generation's Multics
Recently I had cause too try kubernetes… it has quite the rep so I gave myself an hour to see if I could get a simple container job running on it.

I used GCP autopilot k8 cluster… and it was a slam dunk. I got it done in 30 minutes. I would highly recommend to others! And the cost is totally reasonable!

Running a k8 cluster from scratch is def a bigco thing, but if you’re in the cloud then the solutions are awesome. Plus you can always move your workload elsewhere later if necessary.

ryanobjc··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Disagree, many progressives totally also expected prices to rise.

The alternative of forcing people to go to work while covid-19 sick, or being laid off and facing total abject poverty, and such... well not very attractive.

Prices & wages going up was going to be inevitable with inflation, which was on the plate, even if unemployment was never expanded and we forced the working poor to work, or eat our of dumpsters.

ryanobjc··on 70% of San Francisco residents say quality of life has declined: poll
The republican brand is associated with racism and declining to govern. They cannot win in the Bay Area.

I’m unclear what policies they’d bring except more bashing in homeless skulls?

ryanobjc··on 70% of San Francisco residents say quality of life has declined: poll
A lot of so-called “crimes” are societal creations. It’s a crime to steal food: is it a crime to let someone go hungry? Actually if that someone is your child under 18, it is in fact a crime.

There are other crimes that aren’t even considered criminal nor even enforced. For example wage theft. You cannot get your boss arrested for clocking you out before you leave. Yet your boss can have you arrested for taking from the till.

Point is, most crimes are because of society structure. Lying on a sidewalk? Setting up a tent somewhere? Living in a car or rv?

In a better structured society there would be better support than calling the police. That’s the essence of “defund the police”.

For many people with well resourced families, allowing a child or family member to live in the street because they lost their job just wouldn’t happen. Generally most people get support from their families (and friends) in this way. But what about those that don’t have those resources? Well apparently “call the cops on them” is the American solution. Great.

ryanobjc··on Rival weightlifter speaks out on transgender Hubbard's Olympic place
> But, I still don't think it's fair for women that an individual who lived the prime of their life as a man, benefitting from all the testosterone and muscle mass

Are you.... sure about this? Like how sure are you? What do you think you know?

The human body changes surprisingly fast. Astronauts that stay in outer space for too long can't even walk when they return to earth. That "too long" is like... a year basically.

A "lifetime" of muscle mass will last for how long once someone starts taking androgen blockers then estrogen?

The reality is while we think of 'sex' as being some kind of chromosomal thing, that isn't what really separates the 'genders'. After all, apart from genitals, there is little external difference in babies. So it isn't exactly the XY/XX... of course one might say "but that happens during puberty", which is what exactly? The significant rise of sex-hormones. As the saying goes "if you can't make your own, store bought is fine" (regarding neuro-transmitters, sex hormones, etc).

So, are you SURE that an individual that "lived in the prime of their life as a man" is just as strong as they once were once they have spent years on hormone therapy? If you're sure, why are you sure? "I don't think it's fair" ... but why? Is is fair to trans athletes?

Disagree.

Also the general move away from paper printed and delivered every day to internet news delivery.

ryanobjc··on After working at Google, I’ll never let myself love a job again
Remember the X Files... "I want to believe". Her only "crime" was she was a greenhorn, and needed belonging and purpose.

I feel truly sad for her, because while my cynical older self knows the ending what was in the cards, is it so WRONG to be hopeful, a little naive and earnest? Where were the people who were supposed to protect that?

At least when you join the military and you become part of that family, everyone noncom at least believes in it. Even if the greater structure can toss you out, your brothers/sisters will attempt to come to your aid. No such luck in corporate america.

ryanobjc··on My apartment was built on toxic waste
Also the gp has no proof or basis for this statement other than: a) they read a story about 1 persons experience b) the site has 1800 units

The gp has to prove a counter factual now: no one else had symptoms.

They can’t do that. Do you know the history of all the move outs of that complex? Do you doubt the owner is highly litigious?

In addition, some people are just more sensitive. They act like a form of early warning system. Does living there give you an increased 10% of lifetime cancer? It would be hard to prove.

And a final note: doesn’t everyone deserve a safe place to live that isn’t poisoning them? The sheer amount of naysaying in these comments is disappointing and reveals a profound lack of understanding of the science and a severely over constrained mindset: if it cannot be proven immediately by an individual without a budget and no resources, then it cannot be true.

ryanobjc··on Taking on Google
What if you are switching from a datacenter that's carbon neutral to one that isn't?

Also as a note, the google analytics js is heavily cached and thus doesn't have to travel as far or at all. Also Google has onramps to their carbon neutral infrastructure everywhere, so theres also that.

ryanobjc··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
There are rules for poll monitors. They have to follow specific rules and laws to participate. They cannot talk to workers. They can only ask questions to supervisors and inspectors only. They cannot be disruptive. I mean how would you like to be trying to count things and get interrupted by "poll monitors"?

That is what happened here. The GOP poll monitors kept on breaking the rules and acting like asses. And they were eventually kicked out, totally legally and according to the rules they signed up for. And the Democratic poll watchers clapped, which may be 'unseemly' but isn't proof of "elections irregularities".

The president, with the 1/4 billion he raised, the full support of the GOP and their allies and supporters _at every level of every government_ and with the backing of the federal government were unable to raise a lawsuit that could convince even judges appointed by Trump. If there was evidence of fraud that could sway the election they would have found it, period. They didn't, ergo it doesn't exist.

The reason people didn't have confidence in the most basic aspect of democracy is because they have been lied to endlessly. Without ANY knowledge of how the system works, they took these lies at their face value. Many things were done to assuage those concerns, and they dismissed the evidence out of hand.

For example, Georgia.... does paper ballots counted by optical tabulators. They did a by-hand recount. The hand-counted totals matched the machine tabulation. This totally rules out any computer or machine problems. But people STILL bring up the 'dominion changed the votes' lies.

And you are encouraging it with your irresponsible comment. You're feeding the lies, by encouraging a sense of 'uncertantity' when there is NOT uncertantity. The GOP Secretary of State in Georgia just presided over 2 elections which delivered major Democratic wins. Suggesting that he is 'on the take' just illustrates the sheer desperation of the losers of this election will take to cast any shadow of doubt on anyone if it comforts the sting of their loss, even as they know that their wild accusations will never have an end, and now resembles a literal witch hunt. When your cast of enemies has to grow to include the GOP leaders in the Senate, and the VP, both of who have endlessly protected Trump, then you really don't have reality on your side.

Regarding the Russian collusion... manafort is in jail over those crimes. Flynn and others were charged with obstruction of justice. You don't obstruct justice because it's fun and dandy.

The trump campaign and admin has made huge efforts to cover up crimes relating to it's behavior with respects to Russia. What exactly are they hiding?

I personally believe it isn't as deep as it seems, but it is also very serious. I don't think Trump is given orders by Russia, or that there was deep cooperation. However, even somewhat of coordination and discussions of sensitive information is criminal.

So yes, the Russian collusion narrative is entirely true. The only reason Trump wasn't charged with obstruction of justice is because of a memo saying they shouldn't charge their boss, not because there isn't enough evidence.

One of the big differences between what happened in Portland and DC is INTENT. The insurrectionists yesterday intended on forcing the joint session to declare Trump the winner of the presidential election. They were attempted to do by force what they failed to do at the ballot box, and at the court house. The fact they were inept and failed does not excuse them at all.

That does not compare even slightly to what happened in Portland. Protests that turns into riots aren't good. However, there was not an intent to overthrow the presidential election there at all.

This kind of whataboutism needs to stop.

4am is noon Europe time, so the sres in Europe would have gotten the page and been on top of their game. They fixed it pretty quick.

Of course in a global outage, nothing is fast enough.

You ask the central database of accounts “does this exist?” And if it doesn’t say yes you bounce the email.

Obviously an error condition should not result in this. But complex systems. It happens.

ryanobjc··on EPA declines to tighten soot pollution standards

But sure, let's not worry about it.

ryanobjc··on About Google's approach to research publication – Jeff Dean
And she said her email contained language like “and if my demands aren’t met, then I will find an exit date.”

It sounded from her account a straightforward threat to leave.

ryanobjc··on About Google's approach to research publication – Jeff Dean
The funny thing is she isn’t going to be harmed by this. In fact if she felt like she needed a different job this is one way to do it. I personally would hate the stress, but some people like it.

One thing I rarely see is people talking about her email where she said “give me a and b or else I’ll leave” - paraphrasing slightly. This isn’t in dispute, she readily admits this.

What ... is an employer supposed to do with this? Also she’s a manager, so there are extra lame legal crap. It feels like they could have not taken her bait - which sounds like hyperbole to me - but I guess they did, and do they have to?

I can’t say about any of the review things, if she is being over reviewed or not, could be. Demanding to know everyone who looked at her work so she could... wage a Twitter war of destruction, well I could understand not wanting to do that. I mean if I was asked to review her paper, I would decline. Who would get into that?

ryanobjc··on It’s time to remove news from Facebook and Google
We don’t need a thousand damned subscriptions each trying to kill us from the death of a thousand paper cuts. There’s no future for sub space.

I want to toss down my quarter and move on without leaving my data and email address for someone to milk.

ryanobjc··on It’s time to remove news from Facebook and Google
Forget Facebook, I won’t defend it.

But I don’t see how google removes revenue from news agencies. They are free to put up pay walls and get deindexed. Or do the hybrid paywall thing that nyt and wsj does where they show up in the searches but people have to login/pay.

The problem is newspapers haven’t figured out how to make people pay online. This isn’t a google problem. It might be a Facebook opportunity/problem though.

From my perspective as a news consumer, the modern newspapers online are too expensive by far. I have a wsj article I want to read. But I’d have to buy a (no doubt hard to cancel) subscription to view it. Ditto the economist - they’re the worst I had a sub and I didn’t want to call them and deal with their hard sell desubscribe, so I had my credit card block them.

If this was the real world, and I saw that interesting wsj article, I’d fork over my $0.25 or $0.50 or whatever for the issue and walk away with it. Rather than entering a lifetime data relationship with some entity that wants to exploit me for more money.

That’s why people don’t pay for news: you can’t on a casual basis.

ryanobjc··on To do politics or not do politics? Tech startups are divided
Over a decade ago, google used to offer benefits to their employees including those who were in a relationship that wasn’t marriage. In otherworldly gay couples. The policy was neutral and straight couples could take advantage of it.

Well irs policy doesn’t allow tax free benefits in this fashion. So employees had to pay extra income tax that was “imputed” from these taxable benefits. And google paid the employees extra taxes.

Is this a political position? Would it make sense for google to cheer for sale sex marriage which reduces their own financial burden? Is it the right thing to do?

Or consider immigration... many high tech companies have substantial immigrant work forces. The thin wedge of the “Muslim ban” in 2017 was a threat to their businesses.

So it makes total sense that a company would engage in politics. Since some of the hot button political issues today boil down to “who is human and who gets full rights?”, yeah that’s a fight that one cannot turn a back to, and many companies cannot.
