User Experience Unicorns

Magic steps you can take or technologies you can use that will make your UI sparkle uncontrollably and be totally awesome. Except that it wont because there is no such thing as unicorns.

ryanisinallofus··on Paying for Open Source Contributions
Someone here gets the 20/hour for STEM volunteer work with kids then donates the money to a charity which Formidable also doubles as a part of another program. Would that address the issue for you or is the idea of getting paid for fun stuff just ruin the fun no matter what on principle?

(I work at Formidable)

ryanisinallofus··on Cerebro App – Open-source productivity booster with a brain
Mac and Swift/Obj-C fanboys will always rail against anything that fails their purity tests. Electron certainly has some issues they need to work out, but Electron criticism doesn't need to dominate this comments section to the rate that it is.
ryanisinallofus··on Video Pros Moving from Mac to Windows for High-End GPUs
Just dogma around the phone OS wars or some reasonable explanation?
ryanisinallofus··on Microsoft Edge and Web Components
Am I remembering incorrectly in saying that other than templates they have not specified intentions for shadow dom or any of the other specs?

http://caniuse.com/#search=Web%20components

Looks like they are still better off than I-Edge but these intentions at least sound promising.

ryanisinallofus··on Microsoft Edge and Web Components
Unless there is new info I do not know about, this leaves safari as the last holdout? New IE indeed!
ryanisinallofus··on Deku: How we built our functional alternative to React
I think there are times for both but I agree with you. I'm pretty much only interested in Multi paradigm languages at this point and after much consternation I'm pretty stoked about the es6 moves and hope JS continues to support all the ways to program things.

Immutability and lazy eval are both really well implemented with OOP interfaces even though I consider both functional concepts.

I read this recently: semantics != syntax.

ryanisinallofus··on Deku: How we built our functional alternative to React
Yet another comment.
ryanisinallofus··on Update on Heml.is
It is almost as if not every single project is a success.
ryanisinallofus··on React is badly designed
On React in Atom: https://discuss.atom.io/t/whats-the-status-of-react-in-atom/...

Do you have an update beyond this?

ryanisinallofus··on Strengthening JavaScript
Which ones specifically?
ryanisinallofus··on Strengthening JavaScript
Ehem, Dart.
ryanisinallofus··on React and Glimmer vs. PaperclipJS (5x faster)
Did you write Paperclip? I already love the API.
ryanisinallofus··on Strengthening JavaScript
Aren't you against this sort of thing?

"It seems to me that a lot of you "bring on our new overlords" boosters are unaware of how HTML5 came about. It was not through one vendor shipping proprietary code and standards bodies mopping up later. Study some recent history."

You convinced me 1274 days ago.

ryanisinallofus··on The new MacBook
Missed opportunity to place an HDMI port and a USB port on the power brick.
ryanisinallofus··on React and Glimmer vs. PaperclipJS (5x faster)
I don't think it's a bad thing that there are multiple competing front-end frameworks in JS right now.
ryanisinallofus··on Isomorphic JavaScript is not the Answer
How do you keep reading past THIS statement?

"It was created to solve the problem of single page web apps running slowly."

ryanisinallofus··on Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition now available
They are betting the farm on Azure and doing what Ballmer had probably been tasked to do for the last 10 years: wait as long as possible before becoming a services company.
ryanisinallofus··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
If someone has UX on their resume I ask them to draw up a user flow diagram of getting groceries.
ryanisinallofus··on Seattle Mayor: I have Comcast, and I would like better service
You can't make a statement like that in a vacuum and when compared to his opponent he's more than forthcoming and opinionated. Murray doesn't have a single issue other than being the guy who will be even more of a friend to big business than McGinn is.

Most people voting for Murray are war on cars mouth breathers who have no idea just how little was spent on bike lanes compared to roads.

ryanisinallofus··on The Octopus That Almost Ate Seattle
NIMBY anti-growth types are bad, but the "war on cars group" is my least favorite.
ryanisinallofus··on The Octopus That Almost Ate Seattle
How a comment which starts with "This is so Seattle" can recieve a single up vote is beyond me.

You also fail to point out the real unique aspect of Seattle culture in your loop.

"Mayer stepped down, and others took the lectern to recite their prepared remarks, which failed to acknowledge that the threat had effectively just been neutralized. Eventually, Mike Racine stood to speak, representing the Washington Scuba Alliance, whose director of conservation, Scott Lundy, first posted Mayer’s photo online. “I did want to recognize that Dylan Mayer is here today. He and his family took a lot of heat over the last week for this legal taking of an octopus. Much of that heat is vitriolic in nature and inappropriate, and Dylan, just so you know, the Scuba Alliance regrets that, and we applaud you for being here,” Racine said. The room stood and clapped. Mayer, once a nemesis of the giant Pacific octopus, had suddenly become its most visible supporter."

I don't know a single city filled with people which, when presented with new information responds so positively. Seattle reacts quickly, information spreads quickly here, but people are also very open minded. More-so than anywhere else I've lived.

ryanisinallofus··on The Octopus That Almost Ate Seattle
I'm a vegetarian who is supportive of hunting. If you are going to eat meat, hunting and butchering it yourself is by far the most ethical and environmentally sound method of obtaining flesh as food. I simply can't reason with someone who finds it OK to eat an animal, but sleeps with one on the foot of her bed, and rages when someone else hunts.

That said eating octopus and specifically the GPO is particularly unethical if you subscribe to intelligence being related to sentience. Additionally it appears that octpus legs contain brain cells, the part you eat is in part brain.

ryanisinallofus··on AngularJS is amazing, and hard as hell
Ember is to Rails is accurate but there isn't much like Angular in server side land. Maybe Plone?
ryanisinallofus··on AngularJS is amazing, and hard as hell
Haha. Is this better?

HARD IS NOT GOOD, HARD IS STUPID

ryanisinallofus··on AngularJS is amazing, and hard as hell
Exactly. In a post-rails world how can poor developer ergonomics even be an acceptable thing?
ryanisinallofus··on AngularJS is amazing, and hard as hell
"JavaScript version of Drupal"

Ouch, but accurate.

ryanisinallofus··on AngularJS is amazing, and hard as hell
With ember you will understand the right way to build an ember app from day 1 and it will take you 2 days to build a working 1st app. With Angular you will use it for a year, still have no idea how to build an Angular app the right way, but somehow your app will be done in 1 day instead of 2.

Just as likely to end up in gizmo.
ryanisinallofus··on How Ouya Shows Kickstarter Sucks for Hardware
This person has no problem with Ouya, the article isn't even about Ouya. He has a problem with kickstarter. He doesn't get it at all.

"Don't buy your electronics on Kickstarter. That's the lesson..."

Nobody "buys their electronics on Kickstarter." They support projects they think are cool, or wouldn't exist any other way.

"don't spend (your money) on mystery hardware that nobody has ever laid hands on, built by new teams. Let other people be the suckers, and reap the rewards later."

Are you kidding me? This couldn't be further from spirit of kickstarter style projects.

This is just an non-news article trying to get hits by saying angry things about a popular project. Doesn't belong on the front page.

ryanisinallofus··on What UX Really Is
The term UX no longer possesses meaning. As soon as graphic designers just started adding UX to their resumes it was dead. The broad definition eloquently described in the very well designed blog post was nice, but far too general. Like saying Hollandaise tastes buttery. True but incomplete.

I'm going to start asking every designer I interview who has UX tacked on their resume like a piece of flair to diagram out a complex user interaction on a white board. In part because I want to enact the ritual hazing that is white board interviews on others, in part because I believe it has potential to distinguish hollandaise from mayonaise.
