ryanglasgow··on Launch HN: 1Flow (YC W22) – In-product user feedback for web/mobile apps
Disclaimer: I’m the Founder/CEO of Sprig (sprig.com) - the industry leader for in-the-moment research.

Congrats on the launch! It’s great to see other companies emerge in this space. Product managers, designers, researchers too often rely on panels with people placed in hypothetical situations. Research is most valuable when conducted with actual customers as they are experiencing your product.

We haven’t seen the problem as you’re describing for smaller startups. It’s actually better to speak with customers directly 1:1 until your product starts to achieve scale.

One suggestion for you is to add video questions. This is a great way for early-stage startups to see and hear from users directly. It’s been so well received by startup founders that video questions are included in Sprig’s Free plan.

Also, the 50-70% response rate is suspect. Sprig has surpassed 2 Billion unique users tracked and millions of survey responses for customers including Dropbox, Loom, and Square. We’ve seen response rates as high as 90%, but on average are seeing a 30% response rate. 1Flow’s survey design is an exact clone of Sprig (see comparison: https://www.loom.com/i/356c650a70b94fffa9a85da83b546595) so differences in design won’t be a factor. Even a 30% response rate is significantly higher than an email survey though which is actually around 2-5%.

ryanglasgow··on Weebly (YC W07) Debuts an iPad App for Building and Managing Websites
Thanks for the positive feedback! For those who don't have an iPad here's a video that previews how the app works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAuKRyuHQcc
ryanglasgow··on A/B Testing is Expensive
A startup isn't looking to make tiny .5% increment improvements so I don't see how this is relevant. Companies looking to grow a small user base are making significant changes, seeking significant improvements.
ryanglasgow··on A/B Testing is Expensive
Interesting read, but I would have to disagree. It's not difficult to reach 90% confidence with very a small sample size:

  - Variation A and B each receive 20 visits
  - Variation A receives 10 clicks while variation B receives 5 clicks
  - The confidence interval for Variation A is 90%

Also, I wrote an article titled "Creating Successful Product Flows" that is very relevant to this post: https://medium.com/design-startups/c41ffbce49a1

ryanglasgow··on How we raised a $1.1M seed round without customers, revenue or even a product.
I didn't expect you to discuss the terms, but the amount raised doesn't really mean anything given there's no context.
ryanglasgow··on How we raised a $1.1M seed round without customers, revenue or even a product.
This is akin to a new hire getting excited about a compensation package of salary + 100,000 shares. 100,000 shares, out of how many outstanding? 1 million shares? 10 billion shares? He raised $1.1M, but at what valuation? After reading the article, I was left wondering if the valuation was low. The team has not proven that they have reached product/market fit or found a scalable marketing channel which makes this a risky bet for investors.
ryanglasgow··on Hacker News Web App for Mobile
iScroll is the industry standard for this. I've seen it used on a lot of web apps and it works pretty well.

ryanglasgow··on iWork for iCloud beta
I'm referring to file storage and syncing across devices. It's not particularly easy given that Dropbox is an entire company devoted to this cause.
ryanglasgow··on iWork for iCloud beta
SaaS is outside of Apple's expertise so it'll be interesting to see how this goes. I've tested the beta and it's very impressive, but where Apple has trouble is scaling its internet services.
ryanglasgow··on Designers Complaining about iOS7
This is a new style for their designers, and I'm not surprised the visual design still needs some work. This is analogous to a developer learning a new framework - it takes time to learn it and get things right.
ryanglasgow··on Designers Complaining about iOS7
Agreed. The icons are easiest part of a redesign to redo and implement tho, and designers on Dribbble have already posted versions that are significantly better. Apple's design team has a few months to fix things up and I'm confident that they will.

ryanglasgow··on Every startup needs a story
Thanks Chuck! I'm glad it was helpful and it was your tweet that really provided the thesis for the article.
ryanglasgow··on Every startup needs a story
Thanks! Figuring out a startups story is often the most difficult part of the entrepreneurial journey, and can take weeks, months or even years. With Burbn, they began with a very different story, but over time it changed into what became Instagram. Where the trouble lies is figuring out what features are most unique and compelling with your product, and focusing on those. In the next article I'm going to break this process down and I think it will answer your question on how an entrepreneur like Kevin could start with a product like Burbn, and wittle it down into a product like Instagram.
ryanglasgow··on Lyft Is Doing 30,000 Rides A Week, Raises $60 Million From Andreessen Horowitz
1) Lyft drivers operate similar to a taxi and wait around until they are summoned via the app to give someone a ride.

2) It's not helping the environment more than cabs, and probably does more damage than cabs. I've seen a Ford F-350 Superduty with a pink mustache picking someone up. Cab's are usually Toyota Prius'.

3) As of recently, it's not cheaper than a cab.

4) It does allow drivers, who often have full-time jobs during the day, make extra money on the side.

ryanglasgow··on Lyft Is Doing 30,000 Rides A Week, Raises $60 Million From Andreessen Horowitz
Taxi drivers are professionals, Lyft drivers are amateurs. I'm not being rude, but that's what they are. Taxi's are under strict regulation and guidelines, and require a medallion to operate. Lyft drivers constantly get lost, take the slowest routes to get around, and have taken me to the wrong place multiple times.
ryanglasgow··on Lyft Is Doing 30,000 Rides A Week, Raises $60 Million From Andreessen Horowitz
I love Lyft and have been using the service for almost a year now, but they've gotten greedy with their pricing model. About once a month I'll take a Lyft home from work, and the same ride has steadily become more expensive. What once costed $12, now costs $18, when a cab would charge $14. It's an easy way for them to boost profits, but I think riders will catch on and look elsewhere as cabs start to get their act together. Flywheel is an app for hailing cabs, and you can pay through your phone just like Lyft. Cab drivers attitude has significantly improved over the course of a year and I'm now no longer opposed to taking one like I once was.
ryanglasgow··on Every startup needs a story
Thanks! Look for the next article sometime next week. I'm going to discuss taking a products story, and turning it into a product flow.
ryanglasgow··on Yahoo Stock Highest Since May, 2008
Apple dropped from $600 to $440 during the same time period.
ryanglasgow··on Yahoo Stock Highest Since May, 2008
Or it's two great CEO's at work. Larry Page has been doing quite well with Google and it's unfair to conclude market forces are the reason.
ryanglasgow··on What happens after Yahoo acquires you (2011)
I don't understand how entrepreneurs expect to sell their business and reap the rewards while not expecting the acquirer to make modifications to their own benefit.
ryanglasgow··on My one talk with Marissa Mayer
"I negotiated for myself a role as the "Chief architect of Symantec's Mac strategy."

If you have to negotiate a made-up role for yourself during the acquisition of your own company, it's clear the company sees no value in your input and only wants your product and customers. I doubt David Karp had to negotiate a role for himself because his expertise, just as much as his company, was sought after.

ryanglasgow··on At Google Conference, Cameras Even in the Bathroom
Do normal glasses have a camera attached? Bathrooms are a place of privacy.
ryanglasgow··on Yahoo looking to acquire Tumblr?
If they acquire the company, they'll need to monetize it which is a significant visible change. Tumblr's core demographic is notorious for responding to advertising very poorly, and the founder is clearly disinterested and clueless when it comes to monetization.
ryanglasgow··on Hangouts for iOS
Agreed. The icon is as generic as it gets, and feels really cheap. I'm surprised they didn't stick with their other app icon branding, which is a solid color with a white icon.
ryanglasgow··on Poll: Where do you host your static website?
I've been using recently launched http://fjords.cc . Fjords paired with DNSimple.com has been a dream setup compared to what I previously used (Amazon S3 with Godaddy for domains).
