ryancnelson··on DNS A and AAA records for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been destroyed
Um…what’s a “AAA” record? Is that like a AAAA record, but for the elusive ipv5?
ryancnelson··on Ask HN: What is the oldest image online in which the link is not broken?
There’s Usenet archives going back to at least 1990. I’d search those for image urls, then find ones that still work. I just checked and sumex-aim.stanford.edu isn’t a host anymore :(
ryancnelson··on Build a salary with GitHub Sponsors
can you correct the mangled misspelling of the site's actual name in your posting title?
ryancnelson··on Run x86 Apps (including homebrew) in the Terminal on Apple Silicon
There's also the "arch" command, to run commands under rosetta2

I just installed Homebrew on my new m1 MacBook Air with:

$ arch -x86_64 /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/in...)"

ryancnelson··on Submarine Cable Map
Equinix used to offer this map as a cool poster to customers (and maybe everyone?). I'd love a not-beat-up replacement, but I don't see an order link like there used to be. I did find the 2019 one for $250(!!), which is a little more than I want to pay.
ryancnelson··on Ask HN: What are some good methods to prove current time?
Encode your message as a hostname, like “the-answer-is-42.yourdomain.com”

Buy or request a SSL certificate for that CN. it’ll be from a notarized source, with a date on it, proving you knew that info at least as early as that, and recorded in the certificate transparency streams.

Also encode today’s lottery numbers to prove you knew the info after that date.

ryancnelson··on File Transfer with SSH, Tee, and Base64
Gnu screen supports zmodem send and receive. I use it frequently to get files into old retro computers I’m playing with.

I’ve used it in datacenters where I’m ssh’d through three intermediate hosts, or when I’m inception-ing down into containers and vm’s

Tweeted about zmodem just last night! https://twitter.com/ryancnelson/status/1306444057602711553

ryancnelson··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
I'd bet that there's usually at least a reporting of "the latest sports scores", etc, to keep people somewhat entertained with the world above.

I'd think that the staff would question "all sports are cancelled, everywhere" without follow-up questions. UNLESS someone is just making up scores for an imaginary league that's being played.

That'd be an elegant solution ... and a FASCINATING story to uncover someday (or write up, as fiction)

ryancnelson··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
Steve Tuck was the long-time cornerstone of the sales team at Joyent. He was at Dell before that. He rose to Sales VP, then GM, then COO there. He's not a kernel coder; he's a tech-business-person, and a cool, noble, and legit one at that.
ryancnelson··on Illumos is a Unix operating system which provides next-generation features
there's an OpenZFS summit going on this week, so I imagine that's why this and OmniOS became top-of-mind for some: http://www.open-zfs.org/wiki/OpenZFS_Developer_Summit_2019
ryancnelson··on Chaosnet Network Protocol
Fun trivia: have you ever used the trick “dig @192.168.1.1 version.bind txt chaos” to ask a DNS server what its version is? You’re asking it’s chaosnet records (this interesting, but obsolete network type).
ryancnelson··on Buttsss: A Case Study
I'd love to see a correlation graph showing the time this was posted to HN, and the server load on the Slack-emoji image-importing service. Pretty sure these are going to become hotkeys in a lot of workplaces.
ryancnelson··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
I really miss the simple, powerful feature set of Cricket Graph, Mac data graphing software from ~1988
ryancnelson··on Free Linux cloud shell for Gmail users
... of course, moments after i posted this comment, it started responding again. Growing pains, I suppose, or temporary burp.
ryancnelson··on Free Linux cloud shell for Gmail users
is this down at the moment? (Sat Jan 27 23:18:48 UTC 2018) the ux seems to be hanging, trying to contact https://ssh.cloud.google.com ...

"slashdotted?", or whatever the hackernews term for that is?

ryancnelson··on Author of curl and libcurl denied entry to U.S. with no explanation
Are we taking bets? I'd put a $5 on "somebody saw his domain name (haxx.se) on screen, and overreacted."
ryancnelson··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
This'll be interesting. What defines "political topics"?

Is climate change news political? Edward Snowden news? Wikileaks? A new build of the Signal app? Hyperloop news?

ryancnelson··on Linux debugging tools you'll love
This 'zine (and really, much of the author's entire website) are pretty much pure, concentrated joy and tech-geek happiness. I hope my kid grows up to have the sort of attitude about solving problems and going about life that she does.

Bravo, Ms. Jvns!

ryancnelson··on How a Portuguese-To-English Phrasebook Became a Cult Comedy Sensation
Some of the funniest (Brasilian) Portuguese misunderstandings I've encountered were due to differences in how some letters are pronounced.

A leading hard "R" is often pronounced like an American "H". An "OU" is sometimes pronounced like an American "ooo".

Once, at a trade show in Sao Paulo, I witnessed an unfortunate network technician trying to debug our _ROUTERS_ tell our (female) director of I.T. to please accept this ethernet-crossover cable and "put it between your hooters".

fun times.
