ryanSrich··on ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users
Is there a way to paste text into the mobile app and get the voice to read it? I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. There's no text input shown while in the voice feature despite ChatGPT telling me to "just type what you want me to read"
ryanSrich··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
That's not alive in any meaningful sense.

When I say alive, I mean it's like something to be that thing. The lights are on. It has subjective experience.

It seems many are defining ASI as just a really fast self learning computer. And while sure, given the wrong type of access and motive, that could be dangerous. But it isn't anymore dangerous than any other faulty software that has access to sensitive systems.

ryanSrich··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
I like science fiction too, but all of these potential scenarios seem so far removed from the low level realities of how these systems work.

I'm not suggesting we don't see ASI in some distant future, maybe 100+ years away. But to suggest we're even within a decade of having ASI seems silly to me. Maybe there's research I haven't read, but as a daily user of AI, it's hilarious to think people are existentially concerned with it.

Yeah it does seem Ilya was smart enough to realize the overwhelming majority of people get caught up in the emotion of these things, but rarely act on their promises when money is involved. I guess we'll see in the coming weeks who quits, but I doubt it'll be significant. Perhaps once Altman gets another company stood up and has billions in the bank to pay people it'll be a different story.
ryanSrich··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
Can someone explain to me what they mean by "safe" AGI? I've looked in many places and everyone is extremely vague. Certainly no one is suggesting these systems can become "alive", so what exactly are we trying to remain safe from? Job loss?
ryanSrich··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
I think Sam and Greg could build something similar to what ChatGPT is today, and maybe even get close to GPT-4, but going beyond that seems like a stretch. Ilya is really the one that’s needed, and clearly he does not see eye to eye with Sam. Another world-class AI researcher at the level of Ilya would have to step in, and I’m not even sure that person exists.
ryanSrich··on Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing?
You think Karpathy is dispensable? I see him and Ilya both as important, and essentially the brains of the operation. Sam was always the VC guy (very Elon Musk in that sense), that came into the company as the non-founder CEO.
ryanSrich··on Microsoft was blindsided by OpenAI's ouster of CEO Sam Altman
Microsoft invested $10b and owns 49% of OpenAi. Yet they don’t have a board seat? Thats genuinely insane, and seems like a huge issue.
ryanSrich··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
Well "out" as in he explicitly quit. He wasn't fired.
ryanSrich··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Yeah but what could possibly be the scam? OpenAI's product works (most of the time).
ryanSrich··on An update on salary transparency in job posts
Won’t they likely place you into a salary band once you actually start interviewing and they see what level you’re at? L1 starts at $100k and L7 tops out at $700k+. I would think a range that broad is using a single listing for all levels.
ryanSrich··on GPTs: Custom versions of ChatGPT
The lack of transparency around how they release access to features is infuriating. Especially when you pay for the product. I cannot stand it.
ryanSrich··on A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time
The fact that I wear one on my wrist and glance at it by chance without having to remember. The fact that there’s a clock on every appliance in my house and I look at those without intention to do so. Maybe all of that is subconscious action based on my perception of time. I’m not sure.
ryanSrich··on A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time
How does that work in practice? She can read a clock right? So would she just not remember to look at the clock to see the time? Genuinely curious.
ryanSrich··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
I think Elon also said it wouldn’t censor information. So responses like this wouldn’t happen:

“I understand your request is for fictional purposes, however, I am unable to provide information or assist with the depiction of illegal activities, including drug production. However, I can assist with other aspects of your screenplay or suggest alternative ways to convey your character's involvement in illegal activities without going into explicit detail.”

That’s a response from ChatGPT when I asked it to describe cocaine production for the use in a fictional screenplay.

ryanSrich··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Yeah that page loads, but then when you sign in with Twitter it doesn’t work. There’s an Oauth error.
ryanSrich··on The product manager role is a mistake
Seems like you’d have a lot of overlap if what the PM is doing are the activities I listed, and you also employ the people I listed.

Also, what engineer doesn’t understand the product deeply from both a technical and business perspective? Maybe a contract dev, or a new hire.

ryanSrich··on The product manager role is a mistake
> Very few engineers want to maintain relationships with customers

That’s what CX is for.

> interview users to identify potential features

That’s what designers are for.

> manage leadership, play politics for resource allocation

That’s what your lead/people manager is for.

You don’t need a PM. You need an org chart.

ryanSrich··on My Love Letter to Rails (and Ruby) – Or, Why RoR Isn't Dead Yet
No. My point isn’t about using devise (I’m almost certain that’s what ChaGPT recommended). My point is that if you actually attempt to do both (code a simple app using ROR vs. another framework), you’ll find ROR just works 95% of the time. You might not like Ruby, or the syntax, or how a lot of what’s actually happening isn’t obvious. But to people who need to standup and build an MVP in a weekend there’s nothing that allows you to do it as fast.
ryanSrich··on My Love Letter to Rails (and Ruby) – Or, Why RoR Isn't Dead Yet
Simple litmus.

Ask ChatGPT to create a basic Rails app that has authentication, routing, and a dashboard page only accessible after login.

Then ask ChatGPT to do the same thing, but with any other language/framework.

ryanSrich··on Toyota Takes Aim at EVs with Ammonia Engine
I think Toyota genuinely believes EVs are a fad. They might even be right for the current wave, but long term I think they will be wrong.

Where I think they could win is with plug-in hybrids. Plugins have all the advantages of a combustion engine with none of the downsides of an EV.

- easily plugin into any outlet

- range is usually around 30 miles, enough for most people to daily drive on electric only

- combined electric/gas gets you 100+ MPGs

My wife drive a Prius prime, and has filled up once in the last 5 months (she drives everyday for work).

ryanSrich··on Ask HN: 20% of LinkedIn's recent layoffs were managers
This is absolultey insane.
ryanSrich··on Show HN: Reliable AI-generated text detection at checkfor.ai
I just pasted a paragraph I wrote and it told me it was 100% AI-generated. Huh?
ryanSrich··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
How could real estate not be an investment? Land is scarce. You would have to prevent people from buying it. Not to mention updates, improvements, etc. People would have almost zero incentive to improve their property, and then who is left with the massive repair bills when those people vacate? Real estate by nature is an investment (good or bad).
ryanSrich··on Insider trade on Splunk acquisition?
Legally speaking then, it's best to never make trades on any company that you currently or have previously (because you could still have friends that work there) worked for?
ryanSrich··on Insider trade on Splunk acquisition?
Where's the line for insider trading on something like this? Say you were a low level Splunk or Cisco employee and you had a hunch the acquisition was going to close sometime this week (you're not working on the deal, you just heard through the grapevine that it's happening). Is that considered insider trading?
ryanSrich··on We forced our company to allow work from home again
I’d much rather the free market figure this out. If I want to change my company from being remote to in office I should have that power. Employees should have the power to quit, which they already do.
ryanSrich··on We forced our company to allow work from home again
> they all resigned together but the company couldn't find anyone to replace them on linkedin. doesn't correlate with my experiences.

Yeah this was a clear sign the post was fake. Even entry level posts on LinkedIn will get a few hundred applicants in day. Leave it up for a week and you might have over 1,000. This is the case for anywhere in the US. Could be the smallest most rural town in the US. If you make a job post requiring in office work there you’ll still get hundreds of applicants.

ryanSrich··on Aardvark'd: The Fog Creek documentary, 18 years later
I can't recall where I read it, but I thought they moved because they didn't see a future in Boston. They thought the VC community just wasn't viable there (which seems like a bet that panned out - not many prominent VCs in Boston compared to their peers).
ryanSrich··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
Musk is a staunch free speech opponent. You need not listen to what he says, just observe what he does. There may not be a single thing on this earth Musk hates more than free speech.
