rwbt··on Show HN: Wireworld written in Nim
Coming from C++ (with C experience too), I too was hesitant about Nim because of GC. But I can turn it off completely or even better "--gc=stack" which makes it behave like C++ (dealloc when going out of scope). The compiler is also good at telling you what calls use GC'ed memory, so you can work around them if necessary.

But even with GC on, Nim is super fast. I use it in real time rendering and I honestly didn't see any significant performance loss. In fact, it made some routines much faster because the Nim compiler produced much better C code than I ever did.

rwbt··on Show HN: Wireworld written in Nim
Nim is probably the most easiest language I've picked up. It's a delight to program in Nim and the performance is stellar (beats hand coded C in many cases). It's a rare feat really.
rwbt··on Let's Fix OpenGL [pdf]
> I feel like having a more common language would just lead people to bang their heads against the impossible or implement horribly inefficient algos not really understanding what's going on under the hood

Good point.

rwbt··on Let's Fix OpenGL [pdf]
> He seems to just hand-wave and says "well just use C you idiots". He criticizes Metal for using a version of C++14 that doesn't allow recursion, but offers no alternate solutions

I don't think the author suggested anything like that. He recommended using C with some extensions, so it would be easy to write shaders in many different languages. Also, he criticized the poor implementation of Metal's shading language which requires a custom fork of Clang (which is apparently buggy), not necessarily the choice of using C++14.

> The reason GLSL isn't C is because you can't do everything C does on a low end cellphone GPU - so obviously you have to restrict the language.

That may be true in the early days of OpenGL, but now that's probably no longer the case.

rwbt··on Reinventing the Git Interface (2014)
If you're a small team or solo developer, fossil just works. Highly recommended.
rwbt··on Reinventing the Git Interface (2014)
That's why I switched to Fossil and now spend more time writing code than trying to deal with Git CLI weirdness.
rwbt··on Tutorial for Wykobi – A C++ Computational Geometry Library
Good questions. I'm also interested and I'm planning to test it out first thing tomorrow. But from the FAQs, this project seemed to be around since 1997 (not C++ back then though) so I'm guessing it should be pretty stable.

Are there any other active directories? Seems Yahoo Directory is also gone for good.
rwbt··on Fossil SCM
That's correct. Fossil is just a single binary and all the 'artifacts' in the repo are stored in a single sqlite file. The built-in server works really well or it can also be used with CGI.
rwbt··on Fossil SCM
I use fossil for all my projects. It's very lightweight and almost set it and forget it system. Remarkable.
rwbt··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
A few years ago I had to learn stick shift because there was a good deal on a car I liked and decided to see if it's worth it. Ever since, all my cars are standard transmission and I wouldn't have it any other way. They're definitely going away, but I'll keep buying as long as they're available.

There is something very satisfying about the mechanical nature of a stick shift car. Mind you, I drive in traffic heavy Los Angeles and still prefer it over an automatic transmission.

rwbt··on India raises withdrawal limit as rupee anger mounts
If it's really just 6% of tax evasion, then I honestly think this is just a political decision trying to keep their promises.
rwbt··on India raises withdrawal limit as rupee anger mounts
I don't know if there is a better option but the GoI definitely didn't think this throughly. Countries that demonetized in the past did this over a span of a time to prevent panic and fear. If the Govt set a deadline instead of abolishing them overnight that would go a lot smoother. Sure, that'll give 'some' tax evaders time to plan their 'exit' smoothly but it'll make lives of millions so much easier. Most likely, the evaders use that money to buy gold, so the Govt can temporarily track all gold purchases (they do it anyways for puchases over 2 lakh rupees). Even if they end up spending the cash on inflated real estate, they're in someways helping the economy instead of hoarding the cash and will end up in someone's bank account eventually. Also, all the big tax evaders rarely hoard cash. They usually have offshore accounts and sophisticated corporate structures.

Secondly, the new notes being minted have no additional security features. The RBI confirmed that the new 500 and 2000 bank notes carry the same security features as the previous ones, which probably makes it similarly easy to counterfeit. The RBI previously claimed that it would take 5-6 years to design notes with new security features and I think they should've waited until they have better bank notes to curb fake notes.

rwbt··on India raises withdrawal limit as rupee anger mounts
That might be true, but your Indian colleagues are probably well off with much of their transactions happening in plastic/electronic anyways, so this will have very little effect on their day to day lives. Since much of the Indian economy is cash based, there is a lot of frustration in the working class and there is a serious cash (as in bank notes) crunch.
rwbt··on Fossil: A decentralized version control, bug tracking, and wiki software
Love fossil. I use it for all my projects. Simple and easy to learn CLI (unlike some other popular DVCS) and the built-in issue tracker/wiki is very helpful. For indie devs or small teams fossil 'just works'.
rwbt··on EFF to Apple Shareholders: Your Company Is Fighting for All of Us
Did anyone read the article?

> CNET reported that Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, was greeted with a standing ovation

rwbt··on We ditched Google Analytics
I've had good experience with Statcounter (http://www.statcounter.com)
rwbt··on Trouble in the Checkout Line: Which Way to Pay?
May be I'm old fashioned, but unless I'm buying something expensive I stick to just cash. Always works. Ironically, now I consider cash more 'secure' than plastic.
rwbt··on The Making of a $500M Mansion in L.A.
To be fair all of the above were built before 1970s. There are a few modern buildings like "The Broad" that are quite interesting. But overwhelmingly LA architecture is now dominated by tasteless developers like the one described in the article.
rwbt··on The Making of a $500M Mansion in L.A.
Sadly, there is some truth to it.
rwbt··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
My solution http://notational.net It has an option to encrypt all the notes and provides a really simple interface to write/read and search notes. It uses OS X crypto, so I don't know how secure it really is. But for something basic, it works very well.
rwbt··on BitTorrent Bleep – P2P messaging solution from BitTorrent
I assume they'll eventually release a technical specification that allows other clients to interoperate. I think it's better to get the usability right and other aspects polished first.
rwbt··on GoTenna – Send and receive messages even when you don’t have service
Very cool. I hope this becomes at least a niche success and the price comes down in future versions.
rwbt··on Gmail API
I don't think IMAP support is going away. This is just a better API for devs to create apps for Gmail.
rwbt··on Magpie – Git-backed Evernote replacement
I mostly use Evernote for clipping webpages for later reference (images, pdfs etc). I still haven't found quite an easy to use replacement. Most of the evernote replacements seem to concentrate only on text/lists.
rwbt··on The Truth on OpenGL Driver Quality
AFAIK, that driver only applies to CUDA and other proprietary Nvidia platforms, not necessarily OpenGL.
rwbt··on The Truth on OpenGL Driver Quality
ATI drivers are horrible on the Mac OS X platform too, even though Apple controls all their drivers on the platform. Even though Intel's GPUs are slow their drivers are very stable and work most of the time.
rwbt··on Clang vs GCC benchmark on UnrealEngine3
Usually, when compiling projects that use Boost libraries which are sometimes very template heavy, the compile times are very long in my experience. Especially, something like the Boost Spirit.
rwbt··on A Proposal to Add 2D Graphics Rendering and Display to C++ [pdf]
I'm not sure about Cairo, but IMHO AGG is probably one of the best C++ libraries out there. Great use of C++ capabilities like templates. Too bad, development isn't active anymore.

rwbt··on Sherlock Holmes Is in the Public Domain, American Judge Rules
I believe the Copyrights for Sherlock Holmes expired in year 2000 and in public domain since then. So I don't think BBC needed to license it from the estate, at least in the UK.
