rwbt··on Money was never the end goal – mrdoob – threejs creator
If I recall correctly mrdoob used to be (or still is?) employed by Google. I'm sure this is his passion project.

Even the Box2D library is written and maintained by one person as a passion project who happens to also have a successful tech job.

rwbt··on Marketing the Odin programming language is weird
I recently used Odin in a commercial project and had a great experience. For me the biggest hurdle was not the language, but having to write programs without an IDE like Visual Studio/Xcode. Having to write my own build scripts (shell or batch files) etc and maintaining them is a PITA.

But I'm glad I did it because it checks off all the "C but nicer" checkboxes.

rwbt··on The Static Site Paradox
I have to politely disagree. If you ever run a website for business/portfolio etc. the number of people more likely to contact you using a contact form is far greater than just telling them to email you. Contact forms also scale well if you need to categorize and channel the queries to different people or need more specific info.
rwbt··on The Static Site Paradox
Static sites are great until you need to have a contact form or want to add basic comments. Yes, you can deploy javascript that uses external services to add such functionality to static sites- but with a basic WordPress site, you get everything right out of the box.
rwbt··on Microui+fenster=Small GUI
It uses Microui lib written by rxi. Checkout other single header only C libs written by rxi[0]. They're really elegant C in my view. [0] - https://github.com/rxi
rwbt··on Google Arts and Culture site I didn't know existed
Seriously asking this - How did it survive so far?
rwbt··on Show HN: Sum (algebraic) types for C in one 100 line header
Err.. Why does one need to even use a different language to implement Arenas and Slices? Yes having syntax level support for them would indeed be nice (something like new languages like Odin and Zig are trying) but you can start using them today and make programming in C an order of magnitude better.
rwbt··on Show HN: Sum (algebraic) types for C in one 100 line header
> Nah, just use Arenas/Pools. Or don't use heap at all.

This will solve more than 90% of problems. I'll also add that replace C pointers with a "Fat Pointer" or Go-like slice struct and avoid the C stdlib. Then you'll have fixed 99% of issues.

rwbt··on Show HN: Sum (algebraic) types for C in one 100 line header
Everytime I have to use std::get<> and std::visit<> I feel like the committee has failed all of us.
rwbt··on U.S. libraries are battling high prices for better e-book access
That might be true but unless there is significant regulatory/policy overhaul what is currently happening is a systematic public funds transfer to Private Equity. If this continues - there won't be too many public libraries around.
rwbt··on U.S. libraries are battling high prices for better e-book access
At the risk of sounding out of touch - I think public libraries should get out of lending e-books altogether. Instead use that money to buy more paperbacks and physical books. It's never been easier to search for a book, place a hold on a book using the libraries' websites.

If more people start showing up in the libraries and use them - they'll continue to flourish. If they become a Netflix for books - they're not going to survive.

rwbt··on Making a 3D modeler in C in a week
Raylib is easy to get started but once the project gets a little complex it bites back. SDL on the other hand takes more time to setup everything but scales extremely well as the project gets bigger and bigger. Also, SDL is exceptionally well written code.
rwbt··on Bicycle use now exceeds car use in Paris
How can we do the same in the US? I would love to take bicycle trips but that means having to share the lane with monster pickups and distracted SUV drivers.
rwbt··on AltStore PAL, the first alternative app marketplace on iPhone, is available now
I think gamers preferred NTSC (and 60Hz) but video/movie buffs adored PAL (higher resolution and 25fps being closer to film).
rwbt··on AltStore PAL, the first alternative app marketplace on iPhone, is available now
Love the 'PAL' reference - just like how many in North America were pining for the PAL video standard (initially Europe but later entire world except North America) but we were stuck with NTSC (and doubled down).
rwbt··on "Lost faith in Kagi" blogger gets in argument with CEO
Are they profitable though? From the contents of these posts and emails mentioned in the article, it looks like they aren't yet.
rwbt··on "Lost faith in Kagi" blogger gets in argument with CEO
Didn't know about starting a T-shirt company using a 3rd of the money they raised. It's kinda bizarre.

But I'm still hoping they become sustainable and make it. I like using it and really do get great value from it.

rwbt··on Vortex: OpenCL compatible RISC-V GPGPU
What version of OpenCL do Apple platforms support? Also, is OpenCL also deprecated like OpenGL on Apple?
rwbt··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
That's unfair to Automattic I think. I think they're really good to maintaining the products with less relative harm. Yes, I know the recent change in terms to feed their data to AI (you can pay them to avoid it).

I'm still hoping they can revamp Tumblr but atleast they keep the lights on.

rwbt··on After AI beat them, professional Go players got better and more creative
Hunter gatherers had more leisure than farming peasants. Surely, one can spot the trend.
rwbt··on After AI beat them, professional Go players got better and more creative
I'm skeptical of this argument. It gave free time to some people i.e. the landed gentry but also created the toiling peasants and a hierarchical civilization.
rwbt··on California is building fewer homes. The state could get even more expensive
Really? That's crazy. I imagine these are full service HOAs that take care of landscaping and provide other services?
rwbt··on California is building fewer homes. The state could get even more expensive
> $759/mo HOA.

That's why.

rwbt··on AI and the Problem of Knowledge Collapse
Yes, we do kind of.
rwbt··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
I think your first instinct is the correct one. But I don't buy the argument that these jobs are somehow empowering them.

My criticism is towards the entitlement of shoppers who think self checkout is too clunky and having to interact with a cashier is too annoying but expect an army of people to work behind the scenes (be it anywhere in the world) to make it easy for them.

rwbt··on America's Great Poet of Darkness: A Reconsideration of Robert Frost at 150
It is probably the most misunderstood poem of all time! There's no going back now though.
rwbt··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
If the system did end up working as designed, wouldn't they get the shaft anyways?
rwbt··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
There is a difference. In a typical grocery store, people only have to tally what you bought only once at the end during checkout. Where as in this "walk out" system someone has to follow you around "virtually" and keep track of everything you do in the store.
rwbt··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
If you don't like going to the grocery store pay someone to go get them for you. Thousands of people remotely "following" you around and scanning things for you, just so that you can avoid using self checkout sounds ridiculous and excessive.
rwbt··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
I'm glad it's gone for good, if the process really works like how it's described in the article. Thousands of poor souls doing terrible pointless menial work just so that a few entitled customers can avoid the clunky self checkout (eww- the horror!). The entitlement of the west has no bounds really.
