rvn1045··on React Native made me give up a project today
Have you tried using expo? It makes development with react native much easier and does a bunch of stuff for you out of the box.

I'm a solo developer writing a fairly complex mobile application with watch integration and while some bits of the setup might be frustrating, however I would urge you to persist for more than a day if possible.

Indeed I had a huge amount of trouble porting my project from my previous mac to a new M1 but after the frustrating setup I just returned to writing JS and swift code and things have been perfectly fine.

rvn1045··on Ask HN: As a dev, what made (or almost) you quit from a job?
indeed haha
rvn1045··on Ask HN: As a dev, what made (or almost) you quit from a job?
Worked at a faang for several years. Some things I didint like:

- They make team members compete with each other

- creating false narratives about peoples career progress

- people don’t want to share key and useful information even with team members

- false promises of verbally giving you a project and taking it away

- invalidating impact of a project because you don’t fit the narrative for a promotion just yet

- people get credit for work they didn’t do etc

rvn1045··on How to Remember What You Read
A good way to remember what you read is to become a domain expert and read everything about some particular domain you are interested in.

When you read in clusters around the same topic the same concepts will get reinforced over and over again.

rvn1045··on The emergence of heat and humidity too severe for human tolerance (2020)
A lot of new technology could potentially solve this problem.

There are certain types of roofs being installed called cool roofs that reflect heat and don’t absorb it that keeps the inside of building a little cooler.

rvn1045··on Once an Addict, Always an Addict?
Here is what helped me kick two major addictions in my life:

I smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day for 6 years straight. It started to take a huge hit on my health and I quit.

I smoked marijuana every night for 4 years then quit and have just smoked it occasionally.

I started doing vipassana several years ago, everyday a little bit of a good chemical balance accumulates in my brain and body to the point where a lot of cravings start to disappear and you feel good in your head and body even without drugs like caffeine.

I wouldn’t say I’ve beat all my cravings but they’re 90% better ..

rvn1045··on Woman sues L.A. after being struck by car on a street where tents block sidewalk
Another thing you have to understand about the us are weak family ties.

If you are unemployed in another country you could easily stay with some family member - cousin, uncle etc

This is not the case in the U.S

rvn1045··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
You don’t think map reduce, tensorflow and the countless other systems that have been open sourced haven’t had huge impact outside of their original use cases at these companies?
rvn1045··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
The scale that these companies operate on requires huge innovations in software engineering and computer science. Think about all the distributed systems that have come out of places like Facebook and Google over the last 2 decades.
rvn1045··on You can be shy and still be a CEO
The real problem is that we don’t have good examples of leaders. A lot of the examples we look for in terms of whom to emulate comes from the pop culture view of corporate America and startups. At a previous company I worked at far too many people were trying to behave like Steve Jobs and give that as an excuse for being an asshole.
rvn1045··on Yale Drama goes tuition-free with $150m gift from David Geffen
Ivy League schools already have pretty generous financial aid policies. Most students are not paying full tuition.
rvn1045··on Ask HN: How to get back in employment market after working on side projects?
I’m currently doing this as well and for anyone else who is doing this you should continuously share your thoughts and progress on Twitter or your blog or YouTube or whatever. It’s easier to leave a track record and you’ll feel a lot better for doing it.
rvn1045··on How Indian Zoroastrians helped shape modern Iran
I understood religion better after practicing and studying meditation.

The backbone of all religions is based on the personal mystical experiences of individuals like Jesus, Mohammad, Budha and many others.

They experienced some kind of personal transformation and feeling of being connected with everything around them.

A lot of religious and spiritual practices are based on developing that feeling within yourself through various trainings.

Monks for example are deep in this territory and may practice meditation for hours and hours a day. When you do that you become very sensitive to changes within yourself and start to see how various stimuli might effect you. They might experience that being charitable and loving etc unlocks deep levels of joy and blissfusness but if they do the opposite they might face a decrease in such feelings etc

So it’s not so much you have to be charitable for some moral reason but more you have to be charitable if you want to experience certain feelings within yourself that are much more pleasant than what you may experience if you do the opposite.

rvn1045··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
It’s not very difficult to do financially if you don’t mind moving to a lower cost of living country. You can live pretty well for 20k USD in many parts of the world.
rvn1045··on Study shows how taking short breaks may help our brains learn new skills
In sports training this is called super compensation. Usually you tax yourself for some period of training and then take a short break. Your body will recover to the initial level of fitness you had + you make some new gains. When your return to training your stronger/faster than before.
rvn1045··on Ask HN: How much do you contemplate per week?
Praying is a form of meditation. In Hinduism a short prayer called the gayatri mantra is repeated 108 times, three times a day and this is supposed to improve your focus.
rvn1045··on Ask HN: How do you generally build a product?
I’m a solo SaaS founder and I’ve built and released several products.

I would say just work on one complex product from start to finish. Do this however you can and after that everything will just get easier.

rvn1045··on Show HN: Mongita is to MongoDB as SQLite is to SQL
This would be super nice to have when developing mobile apps. I’ve used sqllite when developing with react-native, but can see myself using a mongita type solution.
rvn1045··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
Because Coinbase succeeded others didn't pop up. If they didn't exist others would exist.
rvn1045··on How People Get Rich Now
I think one of the most disturbing things about how people get rich in technology startups today is that they get chosen by rich vcs to become successful.

Let’s say there are a few different teams of people working on some promising space that requires a new solution, vcs basically decide the winner by injecting massive amounts of capital into them and make the rest fail.

rvn1045··on How People Get Rich Now
Because you can scale a technology company much faster with less capital and lower acquisition costs today. A lot of the infrastructure has been built out for internet companies to take advantage of. That’s the point of the article that it keeps getting faster . Msft, aapl etc grew faster than their predecessors and today’s companies are growing even faster. Bill gates was a billionaire at age 31.

How did you manage to get over 1000 followers for your bot though?

rvn1045··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
I've worked at Amazon in the past for almost 3 years. You have to put in some initial time investment of 6 - 12 months to learn everything about your job. After that it's not very hard to coast and fly under the radar. I still have lots of friends working at Amazon who are not working more 10-15 hours a week at the most.
rvn1045··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
Low income people in the U.S still have a chance of improving their station in life, although it is very hard. It’s nearly impossible in other countries where poor takes on a whole new meaning.
rvn1045··on Why did I leave Google or, why did I stay so long?
Another post about some Faang employee quitting their jobs and giving their rational for it. It’s thoroughly uninteresting when said employee has already spent years working there and potentially saved millions of dollars. They stuck around long enough to never worry about money and then they write a post about philosophizing their quitting.
rvn1045··on Talent Is Largely a Myth
One point that people don’t understand is that your body and mind can change dramatically through training.

For example you can be a skinny guy but once you start lifting weights everyday your body goes through dramatic changes and you can have step function increases in personal ability. New neural connections and motor patterns get formed because of intensity.

But it’s hard to say how you personally will respond to the training stimulus. Initial talent in anything is not indicoative of future mastery it’s more about how responsive your nervous system is to prolonged effort and Training. How stimulatable are you?

rvn1045··on How hard should I push myself?
I'm not saying the average joe should try to go run a 100 miles untrained.

I'm saying that the average person could easily push themselves more in the athletic realm. If a dude has been going to the gym for a while and can't bench their body weight or run a few miles they're probably not pushing themselves at all.

rvn1045··on How hard should I push myself?
People aren't pushing themselves anywhere close to their limits. If you look at extreme athletes who run 100+ miles or swim for hours or lift weights multiple times a day without taking breaks it's evident that human limits are far higher than what the average person is willing to endure. For the average person they should probably be pushing themselves harder.
rvn1045··on Amazon permanently shuts down Prime Pantry
This was just another experiment for Amazon. Shutting it down just means it didn't work out for whatever reason but they'll probably try a similar concept again with a few twists. There are so many 'businesses' under Amazon and many of them compete with each other. Often times this doesn't make sense to the end consumer but these are all just experiments being run to see what kinds of businesses might work.
